A Letter from an Alief Athletic Advisory Committee Parent

My name is Perla Chávez. I am a proud mother of four incredible children, a wife of twenty-four and a half years, and faith driven. My husband Lucas Chávez and I have lived in the Alief community throughout the entirety of our marriage. Our oldest son Diego will soon be 21 years old and is thriving at Houston Community College. Diego is an Alief Taylor HS graduate Class of 2022. Throughout his time within the Alief school system, band and soccer were such an integral part of his life. Alief provided Diego with the opportunity to graduate high school with college credits through their Dual Credit program. Emily is a Junior at Alief Taylor HS and does not have a dull moment to spare. She has been the Goal Keeper on the girls soccer Varsity team since Freshman year. Within the last couple of years she joined the Cross Country team which has in turn helped her improve her overall athletic performance. Our two youngest children, also Alief students, look forward to the day that they reach the age to be able to participate in the extra curricular activities the Alief School District provides. They have grown up seeing their older siblings participate in Athletics and Fine Arts. Alief has given our children the opportunities to demonstrate talents that might otherwise never have been discovered. Playing the saxophone is something that we never thought our son Diego would learn to play, but Alief provided the tools and instructors in order for this to be possible. Emily is part of the Veterinary program at the CTE. A program of this magnitude is what sets Alief apart. Emily is being set up for success, being set up for her future. Soccer, which has been an immense part of our lives, has allowed Emily to showcase what she can do on and off the field. Her thrive for this sport is what keeps my husband and I wanting to do more for Emily and her soccer team at Taylor HS. I joined the Taylor Booster Club towards the end of Emily’s Freshman year in hopes of doing more for the girls soccer team. Doing so has made such a positive impact on the team. My husband and I have made ourselves available to help in any way that we can. Joining the Athletic Advisory Committee in 2023 was such an incredible opportunity. Knowing that the Alief Administrators want to know what we, the Alief parents, want for our children, speaks very highly of this school district. Listening to our ideas and concerns, and following through with what is feasible, shows that our voices matter. Alief listens! We just have to be present. I encourage more parents to be part of all that Alief provides for our children. The tools and opportunities are there. When we are present, we are united for one goal, the success of our children.

Alief ISD Family & Friends, In my 12 years in Alief ISD, I have witnessed significant transformations in our Alief athletic programs. Serving as a teacher, assistant coach, offensive coordinator, campus coordinator and Assistant Athletic Director in Alief ISD, I have seen and experienced tremendous growth in facilities and culture. It has been a privilege to experience these advancements firsthand and to play a role in the continuous improvement of Alief ISD athletic facilities. More importantly, my time here has allowed me to build invaluable relationships with outstanding parents, administrators, and colleagues. I look forward to continuing our progress, working to enhance and expand upon what we have built, and help lead us in a positive direction. Thank you, community, for an amazing fall and winter sports season! With the completion of all the competition fields our Middle School Athletes will have a great experience when they come over to play. Your energy and enthusiasm mean so much to our teams and coaches, and it truly makes a difference in the experience of every student-athlete. I am looking forward to a wonderful spring semester as we continue to make

great strides in upgrading our athletic facilities. With the installation and completion of all scoreboards inside our gymnasiums, we are enhancing the experience for our student-athletes and fans in the middle and high schools. Additionally, the Hastings softball complex is undergoing significant renovations, including new dugouts, scoreboard and field regrading, ensuring a top-tier environment for our student-athletes. I would also like to take this time to express my sincere gratitude to all the staff members who make our sporting events possible throughout the year. From administration, police, custodial staff, maintenance teams, ticket takers, sellers, clock workers, announcers, and officials your dedication and hard work do not go unnoticed. Thank you for your continued support in making all our seasons a success! On behalf of our student-athletes, I want to personally thank our community for providing the resources to help our student athletes thrive in the classroom and on the field of play. I have seen and experienced firsthand how investing in our student athletes today brings life to the Alief ISD community of tomorrow. Your support is invaluable, and we look forward to an exciting spring semester.

At the time I am writing this, we are a few days away from Super Bowl LIX, where we will witness the matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles for the second time in a row! Though I’m not a fan of either team, I can’t help but admire the tenacity, hard work and dedication each one of these players bring to their respective teams. It doesn’t matter if you’re the quarterback like Patrick Mahomes or Jalen Hurts, each person brings something special to the team and everyone must bring their “A” game. There are no bench riders; you must commit to the play and be a teamplayer in order to reach the goal of winning the highest level in the NFL. As members of the Alief ISD team, we should run our plays the same way. In order to achieve the results that we want, we have to do the work, be willing to get our hands dirty, and commit ourselves to the ultimate goal of

providing the highest quality education for our students. Alief has always been forward-thinking and we do our best to remain prepared for what lies ahead. It is because of this forward-thinking that we have designed programs to best fit the needs of our students. From our Schools of Choice to our CTE program, Performing and Visual Arts and STEM academies; you can find it all in Alief ISD. We make decisions based on the end in mind and to educate the whole child. We could not do what we do without our amazing Board of Trustees, campus and district leaders, teachers and community members. Our student-athletes are well-versed in teamwork. They exemplify this on and off the court and field every single day. Whether it is from their coaching staff, their parents or each other, our students understand that we can only get better together. I have referred back to my time as a student-athlete and the lessons learned throughout every step of my professional career. As your superintendent, please know that this work that I do is not done alone. Whether it be the Board of Trustees, cabinet, student, teacher and community advisory boards or people I meet in the grocery store, I don’t take for granted the ideas you share with me on how best to improve our schools. I want to encourage our community to continue to be a part of our Alief ISD team by supporting the extracurricular activities of our students. Whether it’s attending a soccer match, track meet, Fine Arts exhibit or speech debate; know that your presence is felt and appreciated. Thank you for taking part in the education of our students. Having you on this journey is paramount to our success.

Shakes is on a Mission Back to State for Elsik in 2025 UNDERDOG MENTALITY

But she pushed me, telling me that God would guide me to the right path. After doing well in the high jump in seventh grade, it just stuck with me.” Shakes’ faith has also played a key role in his athletic journey. “At last year’s Regionals Meet, I made a promise with God,” he shared. “I told Him I would get baptized if He helped me make it to State. Well, it happened. As soon as the season ended, I went and fulfilled my promise. This year, it’s all about where He continues to guide me.” After finishing seventh at the State meet last year, Shakes is poised for even greater accomplishments this season. With determination, faith, and a relentless drive to prove himself, the sky is the limit for Elsik’s rising star.

one takes me for granted again.” During his sophomore year, Shakes competed in several events for Elsik, including relays and the 400m dash, but it was the high jump where he truly shined. He captured a gold medal at the District Meet, followed by a silver at Regionals, and eventually became the lone Alief representative at the 2024 UIL-6A State Track Meet in Austin. “It was an unreal experience,” said Shakes. “I was glad to meet so many different competitors and appreciated everyone who came to support me. It also gave me a better understanding of what it takes to not only reach that stage but to succeed at it.” Though Shakes has tried other sports like football, track quickly became his focus. However, that wasn’t always the case. “Honestly, what got me into this sport was my mom,” he admitted. “I didn’t want to do it at first. I knew it would hurt, and there would be a lot of pain in the development process.

FOR MANY ATHLETES, BEING UNDERESTIMATED IS A PART OF THE JOURNEY. BUT FOR ALIEF ELSIK JUNIOR CAIUS SHAKES, IT’S BECOME A DRIVING FORCE BEHIND HIS SUCCESS. Shakes, who competes in the high jump, has often been labeled an “underdog” by head boys track coach Daric Zeno due to his relatively smaller stature compared to many of his competitors. But for Shakes, it’s more than just a label — it’s a challenge he’s eager to prove wrong. “Going into a lot of my competitions, I can see how some of the other guys might look down on me, and I can sometimes overhear them doubting me,” Shakes said. “I’ve always been overlooked because of my height. Most of those guys out there are 6-foot-3 or 6-foot-4, and I’m standing at 5-foot-9.” Shakes, however, refuses to let his size define him. “I want to go in and prove everyone wrong,” he said. “I want to be one of the best, so that no

It’s More Than a Game for Elsik’s Morales BÉISBOL

ES MI VIDA NEXT TO SOCCER, BASEBALL IS A SPORT THAT TRANSCENDS CULTURES WORLDWIDE. VYPE: In your experience with Elsik, have you noticed any changes with the team, since you started playing?

\\ By Matthew Ogle

VYPE: What got you into baseball? What do you love about it? MORALES: “Baseball is my life. It’s always been everything to me, because it’s been passed down through my family and country. This game is always by my side, so I make sure to bring it with me at this stage.” VYPE : Has it been difficult adjusting to life here in the U.S.? MORALES: “It’s a little hard, having to get used to the English. But, like I said, the opportunities are worth taking on something new, and I’m still working on it.” VYPE: What do you hope to do after you graduate? MORALES: “The first goal is to play in college, whether that be at a big university or at a JuCo. The MLB is the main objective for me, but I’m just trying to find something that comes around my way to begin with.”

THE CURRENT MLB DEMOGRAPHIC IS A TESTAMENT TO THE SPORT’S GLOBAL APPEAL, WHICH EXTENDS FAR BEYOND THE UNITED STATES. For Alief Elsik senior Abraham Morales, baseball is more than just a pastime—it’s his passion and his life. Having moved from Cuba to Texas just two years ago, Morales has faced his share of challenges, particularly with the language barrier, which he continues to adjust to. Despite these obstacles, his love for the game remains unwavering, and he has quickly become one of the key players in the Alief Elsik baseball program. With the help of his bilingual teammate, Danny Zelaya, we were able to connect with Morales to learn more about his journey.

MORALES: “I used to see things differently here in the program. Now, I notice that there are different expectations for us and myself. I’m hoping that we can build off of each other and execute the way that we’ve envisioned.” VYPE: What would you say is your greatest strength as a player? MORALES: “I think it relates to my adaptability. I was originally an outfielder, but given my experience in Cuba, where I played everywhere, I was able to transition over to pitching pretty quickly. I’m comfortable being on the mound, but I know that I’m capable of playing any role that’s needed for the team.” VYPE: What would you say has been the biggest difference since moving to the U.S.? MORALES: “There are a lot more possibilities here. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunities that I’ve been given and I’m hoping that I can make the most of them.”

This winter, he has been making waves in the 400-meter dash and relays, but it’s his jumping that could punch his ticket to Austin. “I’ve always been able to jump, but I didn’t really take it seriously until my sophomore year,” he said. “My goal is 24 feet in the long jump and 6-foot-10 in the high jump. “I was hit by a pitch right on my hand,” she said. “I didn’t cry at first, but when I got to first base, I started bawling. I was out for the season, and it really hurt—physically and emotionally. It made me realize just how much I love the game. I missed it so much. The first thing we stress is academics. That’s the main thing, coming in, and letting them know that you have to believe in yourself. We can’t teach heart. Taylor’s Orogun Ready to Contribute to Alief ISD in More Ways Than One WORTH the CHALLENGE

\\ By Matthew Ogle

GOLF IS OFTEN CONSIDERED A ‘LIFELONG’ SPORT, BUT IT’S ALSO ONE OF THE HARDEST TO MASTER. FOR ALIEF TAYLOR’S OYINDAMOLA OROGUN, HOWEVER, IT QUICKLY CAPTURED HER INTEREST. “I joined the team last year with my older brother, Funsho, to see what it was all about,” Orogun explained. “I’m not very athletic, and most of the other sports were already full, so I was glad to find something that didn’t require too much physicality. I just wish more people would appreciate it like I did.” While Orogun grew fond of the game, she soon realized that it’s not for everyone. “It’s definitely harder than it looks,” she said with a laugh. “Watching people play, whether in person or on TV, makes it seem easy. But

actually doing it is a whole different experience. I went into it thinking I wouldn’t face too much physical strain, but I still get back pain from all the swinging. Still, I think that the challenge is worth it.” Before joining Alief ISD, Orogun was part of the Fort Bend ISD district. After attending Albright Middle School, she ascended to Alief Taylor High and quickly felt at home.

“Of all the schools I’ve been to, I love Alief Taylor the most,” Orogun shared. “Maybe it’s because it’s high school, but there are so many more opportunities to get involved, and you meet a lot of different people. Luckily for me, I’m involved in several other clubs, so I’ve had the chance to experience everything this school has to offer.” Among the clubs Orogun participates in are Alief Taylor’s NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserve Officer

Training Corps) and TAFE (Texas Association of Future Educators).

Orogun plans to continue her journey at the University of Houston, where she hopes to pursue a career in education. “I want to become an educator,” she said. “I may play golf for fun, but my goal is to one day teach in an elementary school for Alief ISD. It’ll be a full-circle moment for me when I see that dream come true.” Who needs ‘physicality’ when you have the determination to succeed?

We’re still at a point where the kids are learning the sport so the expectation is just for them to keep progressing and to make sure that they’re having fun. When they first came in, they started off somewhat timid and I haven’t had them all together until recently. But, what we have now is a good idea of what this program can be in the future, and I’m hoping everyone begins to settle in. “ CORNER

We’re now at the point where we expect these older guys to set more of an example and embrace the leadership role, whether that be verbally or through their actions. So, that’s the expectation that they’ve set, and we’re just trying to make sure everyone can follow along. “ ” ~Coach William Moore TAYLOR BASEBALL CORNER ALIEF ISD \\ 37

SPOTLIGHT on the ARTS

\\ By Meredith Harrison, Fine Arts Facilitator Alief ISD’s Creative Renaissance

ALIEF ISD IS A VIBRANT HUB OF LEARNING, AND AT THE HEART OF THAT VIBRANCY LIES A THRIVING FINE ARTS COMMUNITY. From the striking presentations of our visual arts to the soaring melodies of our orchestras, our students are exploring their creativity and developing skills that will last a lifetime. We are committed to providing our students with enriching and challenging experiences in the fine arts. We believe that participation in these programs not only enhances their artistic abilities but also develops crucial life skills that will prepare them for success in the future. We invite you to join us on this journey of creativity and discovery as we celebrate the talents of our Alief ISD students.

DANCE: Movement and Mastery

Our dance programs are more than just steps and routines; they are a journey of discipline, expression, and teamwork. This year, our talented dance leaders had the opportunity to showcase their hard work at the Texas Dance Educators Association (TDEA) Convention as part of the All State Dance Team. These All-State Dance Team members, represented Alief ISD with pride and artistry. Their dedication and passion are truly inspiring. This prestigious event brings together dance educators and students from across the state, providing a platform for learning, collaboration, and performance.

MUSIC: A Symphony of Success

The sounds of music resonate throughout our campuses, thanks to the dedication of our band, choir, and orchestra programs. Our student musicians are not only honing their musical skills but also developing crucial life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, and leadership. The Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention is a highlight of the year for these programs. We are incredibly proud of the Alief ISD students who have earned the honor of performing with the All-State Band, Choir, and Orchestra. Their selection is a testament to their exceptional talent and commitment. We encourage you to attend their performances and witness the magic they create.

THEATRE: Shining Stars

Middle and high school theatre boast engaging programs available for students. These programs offer students the opportunity to develop their acting skills, learn about technical theatre, and participate in a variety of productions. Alief ISD’s theatre programs aim to foster creativity, collaboration, and self expression in students while providing them with a platform to showcase their talents. Students participate in UIL-One Act Play productions, Regional, State and National competitions.

JROTC: Leadership and Service Through Discipline

Our Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) programs at Elsik (Air Force), Hastings (Marines), and Taylor (Navy) high schools instill values of leadership, citizenship, and service in our students. While not strictly fine arts, the JROTC drill teams often incorporate elements of performance and precision, demonstrating the discipline and teamwork cultivated within these programs. These cadets are not only preparing for potential military careers but also developing into responsible and engaged members of their community.

NEWS SPEECH AND DEBATE: Voices of the Future

Through tournaments and competitions, they gain confidence and learn to advocate for themselves and their beliefs. These skills are essential for success in college, career, and life. We encourage you to support our debaters as they compete throughout the year.

Our cheerleading squads bring energy and enthusiasm to our athletic events, embodying school spirit and supporting our teams. These athletes demonstrate incredible strength, agility, and teamwork. They are not only cheerleaders but also ambassadors for their schools, promoting sportsmanship and community pride. We look forward to cheering them on at their upcoming competitions!

ART: Creativity in Every Hue

The visual arts come to life in our classrooms, where students explore different mediums and express their unique perspectives. The Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) Convention provides professional development opportunities for our art educators, ensuring that they are equipped with the latest techniques and resources to inspire our students. We are also excited about the upcoming UIL art competitions, where our talented artists will showcase their work. The Junior Visual Arts Scholastic Event (Jr. VASE) in April provides middle school students with an opportunity to participate, while high school students can participate in VASE in March, with State VASE in April. These events celebrate the creativity and talent of our young artists.

JOURNALISM: Telling Our Stories

Our Journalism programs empower students to become storytellers, journalists, and media producers.
