FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: QuEST Fellows receive housing, a food stipend, a personal stipend, a bus pass, health care costs, and an exit stipend. The program has an enrichment fund for personal classes, and repayment of student loans can be postponed. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Participants live communally in a house in the centrally-located University District: private rooms, two bathrooms, two living areas, full kitchen and dining room, small porch and garden space. SIZE OF PROGRAM: Six QuEST Fellows. TRAINING: QuEST provides an orientation at the start of the program year; two weekend retreats per year; a monthly training session on areas like anti-racism, facilitation skills, and financial literacy; and a monthly reflection session to support resilience and discernment. Specifically, by providing volunteer opportunities to lay people who feel called to challenge unjust structures and stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalized. The four goals of Quest are: to recruit volunteers committed to developing spirituality, living simply, growing in community, and working for social justice; to collaborate with local organizations that challenge unjust social structures; to transform volunteers through relationships with the poor and marginalized; through the charism of St. Claudine Thevenet, to inspire lay people to participate in the struggle for justice. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Yearlong: General education, education in elementary school; teaching computer skills; Health Care: MD's, specialists, nurses, technicians; Agriculture, environment (reforestation); Month of July: Counselor in children's summer camp. AREA OF SERVICE: Gros Morne, Haiti LENGTH OF SERVICE: Yearlong: September to August, renewable. Short-term: Four week summer program in July. REQUIREMENTS: Yearlong: Women and men, college education required; professional training or work experience. 21 years and older. Ability and desire to learn Creole. French is an asset to learning Creole. Simple lifestyle while living in Community with religious sisters. Shared prayer in the Catholic tradition. Open to all Christians. Short- term -Month of July: Men and women, 19 years of age and older. Simple lifestyle while living in community and shared prayer. Camp counselors. Travel to and from Haiti and necessary vaccinations are the responsibility of the volunteer. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers live in community with women/ men volunteers and vowed religious. Pine Ridge is located in Oglala Lakota County, one of the three poorest counties in the country (based on per capita income), but Pine Ridge is also one of the richest and most beautiful communities in terms of culture, spirituality, hospitality, and landscape. Red Cloud Volunteers serve nearly 600 Lakȟóta students in a K-12 Catholic School System, which is jointly administered by the Jesuits and the Lakȟóta people. During the ten-month term of service, which can be renewed for up to three school years, Volunteers work as classroom teachers (elementary or high school) or support staff (e.g. coordinators, librarians, etc.). Volunteers also assist with bus driving, coaching, and after-school activities. If you have a desire to work within a challenging cross-cultural and inter-religious environment, live simply, grow spiritually (primarily through the Catholic and Lakȟóta religious traditions), work for justice in education, and become more socially conscious, then this programmay be a good fit for you. AREA OF SERVICE: Pine Ridge, South Dakota and Porcupine, South Dakota LENGTH OF SERVICE: 10-month school year, renewable for up to three years REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor degree or higher; competent to fulfill one's job duties as a teacher and/or support staff; desire to enter into Lakȟóta culture with an open and receptive spirit; desire to serve the Lakȟóta/Catholic/Jesuit mission of Red Cloud Indian School; desire to grow spiritually and to encourage students and colleagues in this; and desire to live in volunteer community and to mutually support/ challenge each other. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteer housing (living in intentional community); monthly food stipend ($125); monthly personal stipend; orientation, retreats, and community events; professional development (e.g. taking a class at Oglala Lakota College); shared use of a volunteer car; medical, dental, and vision insurance. Stipends increase for each year of service. Volunteers might also be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award ( americorps.gov ).
