A hardy, maroon foliaged, small shade or ornamental tree. The glossy leaves emerge shiny green, turning bright red in June, then quickly to deep maroon. White flowers in clusters in early May precede purplish-red berries. Excellent bird food. Medium- sized, round headed plant. Moderate to fast grower. Excellent purple fall color. Native and the most widely distributed tree of North America. Pyramidal and narrow when young, but more rounded at maturity. Grows in a wide range of soils.
