A very attractive native shrub or small tree. The branches are covered with masses of small, fluorescent lavender flowers early in spring before the leaves appear. A more upright branching form than the species. The foliage emerges yellow green and ages to a dark, shiny green. The stems have dark red color on the new growth. Flat-topped clusters of creamy-white flowers appear in mid-May, followed by blue-black fruit which can persist nicely.
