A very attractive native shrub or small tree. The branches are covered with masses of small, fluorescent lavender flowers early in spring before the leaves appear. The leaves are heart shaped and dark green. Grows best away from prevailing winds. Can suffer winter injury if sited further north than Madison, WI. 18-20'x15-18' Zones 4-9 APR

A more upright branching form than the species. The foliage emerges yellow green and ages to a dark, shiny green. The stems have dark red color on the new growth. Flat-topped clusters of creamy-white flowers appear in mid-May, followed by blue-black fruit which can persist nicely. Fall color is an outstanding maroon, which is the color the plant is named for. 10-12'x8' Zones 4-8 MAY
