During spring and fall bird migration, thousands of American White Pelicans and dozens of different shorebird species stop at the Refuge to refuel along their journeys. Beginning in November, 10,000+ Snow and Ross’ geese browse on winter wheat planted in Refuge fields. spring to fall, and over 20 species of sparrows can be seen at various times of the year. Ducks including Mallards, Northern Shovelers, Blue and Green winged Teal, and Northern Pintail are common in Refuge marshes during fall and winter months. Ask about free guided tram tours, or find out what’s on schedule for the next Second Saturday Nature Pro gram or The Refuge Rocks offered on and 2nd and 3rd Saturdays year-round. Explore exhibits that highlight Refuge wildlife and habitats, migratory birds, recreational activities, and the historic town of Hagerman. Stroll through the acre Butterfly Garden located near the Visitor Center, or shop the Nature Nook for unique gifts and tee shirts. Perhaps you will see a secretive Least Bittern or Little Blue Heron wading through the marshes during summer, or an American Bald Eagle soaring over head in search of food during winter or spring. Long-legged Great Blue Herons are present year-round and don’t forget to keep an eye out for white-tailed deer, wild turkey, or bobcats roaming Refuge forests and fields. BUNCOMBE CREEK GOLF COURSE

Buncombe Creek Golf Course has been in our family for three generations, but it all beganas a peanut farm and cattle ranch. In 2001, we transformed this land into a 9-hole getaway. The course is designed to be enjoyed by experienced and beginner golfers alike. We also offer a driving range and a practice putting green.
