Spanish fine binder Zigor Anguiano Calzada’s “The Helen Fragments” won first prize in the Set Category, as well as the University of Denver International Prize.
The Art of Bookbinding In 1860, English novelist George Eliot wrote, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” But for fine bookbinders, the cover is meant to be judged. This year marks the first time the University of Denver will host Open•Set, a triennial international bookbinding competition, coming to Anderson Academic Commons from May 2 to August 10. Sponsored by the American Academy of Bookbinding, the competition showcases exquisitely crafted books, evaluated by a jury of professional fine binders before traveling to only two locations across the country. The University Libraries awarded two prizes, the International Prize and the Bibliophile Prize, with both books added to the DU Libraries’ collections thanks to the generosity of DU Trustee Taylor Kirkpatrick (MBA ’04).
