In Action
Supporting World-Class Student-Athletes A two-time chair of DU’s Board of Trustees, Joy Burns was known for her unflagging support of DU’s students and student-athletes, particularly women. She was instrumental in bringing DU into Division I, and women’s athletics— gymnastics, in particular—would not be what they are today without her. A gift from Burns’ estate continues to support women’s gymnastics and the Joy Burns Arena—as well as many other areas across DU, continuing the legacy she established during her lifetime. This season, DU gymnastics broke its single-meet attendance record, with 6,473 attendees, and records for total and average attendance. DU gymnasts have competed at the Olympics over the decades, a mark of the program’s enduring excellence.
Modeling Philanthropy for the Next Generation
A personal gift of $500 to each graduate from commencement speaker and former DU trustee Pat Hamill (BS ’81, Hon PhD ‘23), CEO of Oakwood Homes, took undergraduate students by surprise at last spring’s ceremony. In encouraging students to use the gift to help others, Hamill empowered the newest DU alumni to make a difference in their world, much in the way he has done through his own philanthropy.
