were crowning accomplishments for the club as a whole and for its women in particular. As I write this chapter of CYC history, Paige has a very, very good chance of representing the United States in the 2012 Olympics and of “bringing home the gold.” Women and Club Leadership In addition to fundraising and competitive sailing, the women of CYC have taken an active role in the leadership of the club. Many, many women have served, and continue to serve, on the club’s Race Committee. Em Harris was a pioneer in this capacity and Fay Nicholson played a vital role on the Race Committee for many years. Naomi Seavy served as the scorer for the Snipe Midwinters Regatta for decades. In more recent years, Anne Unger, Brenda Hanson, and Emily Lloyd have followed suit in this critical role for all of the club’s major regattas. In 2008, under the leadership of Judy Widger and Ann Railey, a group of women formed CYC’s Regatta Safety Committee. Since its inception in 1981, nine women have been recipients of CYC’s Yachtsman of the Year Award —one of the club’s highest honors: Jean Beach, Em Harris, Liz Phillips, Jo Warn, Fay Nicholson, Paige Railey, Chris Papandreas, Brenda
