OUR STRENGTHS CELEBRATING

It’s hard to believe we’re entering the home stretch of the 2022-2023 school year, a year defined by both success and growth. That’s the thing about learning, there’s always room to grow - and something new to discover. From my years as a teacher, I know that it’s in these moments that we often learn our most valuable lessons. Join me as we recognize the success of some of our amazing educators and students on the following pages. We have so much to celebrate! We have students who are finding their passion and achieving T-2-4 in countless, inspiring ways. Looking over these pages, I am in awe of their achievements. The milestones celebrated here are the culmination of success and struggle on the field and in the sporting arena. They reflect an individual’s best, as well as the best of us all. We have amazing educators , some of whom you’ll see in this edition of Vype. For every success shared here, there are countless teachers and caring adults who’ve been there every step of the way. I thank them all! From our campus Teachers of the Year to our Principal of the Year winners, elementary and secondary Teacher of the Year finalists and winners and our H-E-B Excellence in Education winners, this issue is a tribute to the dedicated educators in SBISD. We have a strong community. One that values our schools and the high quality of education SBISD provides. I hope in these pages you see reflected our promise to inspire minds and shape lives. I look forward to seeing all the end-of-year celebrations that will take place in our classrooms and schools in the coming weeks. They are well-earned and deserved. Have a wonderful summer, SBISD. I can’t wait to see all we’ll accomplish, together, in the coming year. Jennifer Blaine, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools

SPRING WOODS HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL AND TEACHER SELECTED AS H-E-B EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARDS WINNERS

to complete an application online and is asked about their professional experiences, educational philosophies and achievements in and out of the classroom. During this year’s ceremony, $430,000 in cash awards and grants were awarded to eight educators, two school districts, one early childhood school and a public school board. Since 2002, the program has awarded more than $13 million in cash and grants to Texas schools and ed ucators. As a Secondary Principal winner, Collier will receive $10,000 for herself and a $25,000 grant for SWHS. Beeler will receive $5,000 for himself and a $5,000 grant for his campus. Collier notes that she is excited to invest the grant in SWHS and continue the incredible work happening at the campus. “I am driven to continue the work at SWHS because of the amazing students and community I serve,” said Collier. “I believe that all students can learn at high levels. I also believe that Every Child possesses a unique set of strengths and gifts that need to be highlighted and enhanced. Our job is to make sure that Every Child is important, matters, and has an opportunity to shine!” Beeler hopes to continue giving students hands-on learning opportunities and instill how fascinating science can be through their pocket prairie, infiltration labs, field trips to national parks and more. “All learning should be ‘sticky learning,’ where students remember my lessons even years from now,” said Beeler. “I try to give my students the chance to experience learning for themselves and solidify what we learn in the classroom through experiences, instead of simply hearing about it.” Congratulations to our H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards winners, we are #SBISDProud of you!

During the 21st annual H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards ceremony on April 30 in San Antonio, Jennifer Collier, Spring Woods High School (SWHS) principal , was named the 2023 Secondary Principal, and Ryan Beeler, SWHS environmental science teacher , was named the 2023 Rising Star Secondary Teacher. Collier and Beeler were named as finalists for their respective awards in March. They competed against 58 principal and teacher finalists across Texas and took part in personal interviews with a panel of judges, who ultimately selected them as winners. “This award is really about the students and staff,” said Collier. “When applying, many of the questions allowed me to elaborate and highlight their incredible work and success, from the way they teach, to how they compete and perform. The narrative of this award was really about their stories.” Similarly, Beeler is honored to receive the award and is excited to see SWHS recognized for its amazing students and staff. He is inspired by his students and colleagues, who continually support him. “One of my greatest joys as an educator is to see that spark in a student’s eye when they figure out a concept or learn something new. That spark always motivates me,” said Beeler. “I am also motivated by my colleagues at SWHS. I work with exceptional individuals that are committed to our students. We are all constantly learn ing from each other. They make it easy to come to work every day.” The H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards strives to honor outstanding public school professionals who go the extra mile for their students and their communities and thank them for their dedication and commitment. Each year, teachers, principals, districts, early childhood facilities and school boards are nominated by community members. Each nominee is sent an invitation

MEMORIAL’S DOTSON HAS STAR-POWER BEAR BUILD-A- \\ Matt Malatesta

AS THE BABY OF THE FAMILY, MEMORIAL’S INDYA DOTSON HAS ALWAYS BEEN COMPETITIVE. Her dad Santana Dotson was a force on the famous 1985 Yates State Championship team before going onto to be an All American at Baylor in 1991 and the 1992 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. He had a 10-year career in the NFL and was a member of the Super Bowl XXXI Champion Green Bay Packers. Oldest sibling Khari Dotson played football at UH, sister Amani Dotson was a thrower for the Baylor track and field team, and Sanaa is a starter for the LSU Tigers volleyball team. “Sports has always been in our lives and we have always been competitive,” Indya said. “Even though I am the youngest, I was always competing with them to be the best. We are all pretty balanced though, it’s all fun and games.” Iron sharpens iron inside the Dotson family and it has paid off as the junior advanced to the Regional Meet in five different events – the long jump, triple jump, 200-meters, 400-meters and 4x200 relay. She reached UIL State after winning the long jump at the Regional Meet. “I didn’t know track was even a sport before junior high… I just played soccer,” the two-year soccer letterman said. “I just went out for track in the seventh

Off the oval and pitch, Dotson immerses herself into clubs – from choir, Girls Helping Girls and Mustangs Military Support. “I also love animals,” she laughed. “I’m going to volunteer at an animal shelter this summer.” Who knows, she may trade in her stuffed bear for a live animal to wrap her medals with next season.

event. Where to put all the hardware? “So, funny story,” she said. “We had this big sister-little sister gift exchange in soccer. I gave my big sis a bear and a blanket and some candy. Well, the bear never made it out of the locker room, so I just used it to put my medals on. Now, it’s a tradition. I get a new bear every year and wrap all of my medals around it.”

grade because everyone else was doing it. I started jumping and found out quickly that I was pretty good at it. “Now, I want to run in college and see how good I can be. My goal is to get some championships at the college level.” Since starting track and field, she has been a trophy hunter – earning medals at every level and every

ZOE ROJAS IS THAT KID.

The Northbrook junior plays varsity softball and volleyball; runs track and competes in powerlifting for the Raiders. Where does she find the time? “Honestly, I don’t,” she said. “I pick and choose where I can fit all of them in in one day. Maybe I’ll go to softball for an hour then powerlifting for 30 minutes then track for another 30 minutes. I try and get in as much as I can every week. “It keeps me busy and out a lot of different things that go on during high school. It keeps me going and keeps my spirits up.” Her first love is softball, which is at the apex of her life plan. “Softball is my first love by far,” she said. “How much work you put into it is how much you will get out of it. It’s really you against yourself. I love being on a team too, playing with all of these amazing women. They have helped me grow in so many ways on and off the field.” The four-year starter made her presence felt immediately for the Raiders. “It was the first pitch of my first at-bat on varsity,” she said. “I hit a home run over the left-field fence. I will remember that forever.” So, back to her life plan. While she is a star on her respective fields of play, CTE.

and that really appealed to me. I’m a pretty strong student and am excited to get started. VYPE: What did the time you spent at Spring Woods track mean to you? GRANADOS: Well. initially I joined the track team because my brother did it. But, after a while I kind of thought, ‘Hey, I really like this sport and actually want to continue doing it for myself and get better at it’. So, it was a nice self motivation. VYPE: What’s been your fondest memory at Spring Woods? GRANADOS: It had to be when our cross-country team ran this really hilly course in Brenham. The whole team got personal records on that course, and afterwards we all went out for ice cream. It was a cool bonding experience. VYPE: Lastly, what was your favorite event and why? GRANADOS: Definitely the 800-meters. I like it because you need to find that perfect balance between an all-out sprint like you would in the 100m or 400m, and the pacing that we use in the longer distance runs. It was pretty challenging, which made it kind of fun and I ended up getting pretty good at it during my time here.

What made you decide to go there and what career path are you going to be taking? GRANADOS: I intend to go into the engineering career path at A&M. They have a really good engineering program

Despite narrowly missing out on the playoffs this Winter finishing in the No. 5 spot (5-7-2), the Spring Woods boys were right on the cusp of advancing to the postseason. With another year under their belts, the Tigers will look to return to their 2019 district championship form in 2024. The girls had some bright spots during their campaign and should improve heading into next season with several all-district returners.

The Lady Spartans were phenomenal throughout the Winter (20-5-3), winning their second straight district championship in undefeated (14-0) fashion no less. Led by seniors Lauren Ahearn and Kristin Geczik, Stratford advanced all the way to the Regional Finals before narrowly falling (2-0 in OT) to the eventual State Semifinalist Ridge Point. The Stratford boys didn’t enjoy nearly as much success on the pitch, but they still managed to remain competitive in a tough district and showed some potential for 2024.

DUAL-SPORT TERVEEN OFF TO AGGIELAND CAPTAIN THE \\ Matthew Ogle stratford

“I get the chance to focus on different aspects, such as the mentalities. In tennis, you succeed more than you fail, whereas in baseball it’s the opposite. So, it can be a good confidence booster to alternate throughout the year, while also staying competitive. I know for a fact that my footwork and reaction time has gotten better in baseball because of tennis, so it’s played a significant role in my athletic development.” Speaking of next level, the Stratford senior will be heading to College Station in the coming months to play for Texas A&M, while majoring in Business. Aside from the opportunity to play for a SEC school, there were several determining factors that ultimately cemented his decision. “The big thing for me was the coaching,” Terveen said. “(Jim) Schlossnagle has been really great for A&M, just like he was for TCU. Nate Yeskie is one of the best pitching coaches in the nation. They should really help me improve my game. Plus, two guys who play there now – Tab Tracy (OF) and Cameron Donley (catcher) – I’ve played with at Stratford. They have told me nothing but good things about A&M. That made it an easy choice.” As the Big Man on Campus at Stratford, Terveen has left a lasting legacy for the green and gold.

AFTER BEING ELIMINATED IN THE OPENING ROUND OF THE UIL POSTSEASON A YEAR AGO, STRATFORD BASEBALL MADE A SWIFT REBUTTAL THIS SPRING. Traversing through the regular season as dominant as ever and carrying the motivation to ensure that last season’s abrupt ending was nothing more than a fluke, the Spartans were co-District 17-6A Champions heading into the postseason. Steering the Stratford ship was three-year team captain Paxton Terveen. The defending District 17-6A MVP became the face of the Spartan franchise during his tenure. “I really just try to lead by example,” said Terveen. “But, all the performance on the field is indicative of the work that’s put in at practice and on your own time. Each aspect of the game – hitting, fielding, throwing, footwork – has to be built. I try to show you’re gaining something more over somebody else and you can be one step ahead.” Not only is Terveen a machine on the diamond, but on the hard courts of Stratford tennis. “What’s most beneficial being a multi-sport athlete is the fact that I don’t get too burnt out on one particular sport,” he said. the younger guys that every day you work,
