T he Langston Hughes Cultural Society is celebrating the completion of the Black History and Performing Arts Mural at 1st and Main streets in Joplin. Designed and painted by Kansas City muralist Alexander Austin, the mural depicts artists and entertainers who performed in or visited Joplin, including Langston Hughes and Charles McPherson, who were both born in Joplin. The mural is found on the wall of the downtown business, Bruce’s Point of View, on old Route 66. The figures depicted are, from right to left: Charles McPherson, Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington, Marian Anderson, Cab Calloway, Ella Johnson, Melissa Cuther, Sammy Davis Jr, Langston Hughes, Dizzy Gillespie, Mamie Smith and Ella Fitzgerald. A celebration of the mural will be held with the artist and Charles McPherson Sunday, September 18, from 2 pm to 4 pm at the mural location. Bring a chair and enjoy music, art and conversation. All are welcome.
