SOMA Living September 2023

HOME DESIGN “I’m in trouble now,” my wife announced as we entered Zaborski Emporium in Kingston, NY. Zaborski’s is a 40,000 sq. ft. warehouse filled with salvaged architectural pieces and, above all, thousands of unique light fixtures. And I have a soft spot for collecting lights. “Okay, I’ll be good,” I promised, fingers crossed behind my back. “Our attic already resembles a lighting store,” she reminded me. “I know, I know. But those lights come in handy for renovation projects where they’re a perfect fit for the design. How much better is it,” I mused, “to have a repurposed, one-of-a-kind light that beautifully enhances a space, rather than some mass-produced piece of junk from a big-box store? Each of these lights,” I said, gesturing to the row of hanging chandeliers, “has its own character and story.”

“Yes,” she agreed, “but we simply don’t have room for more. You know how much I despise seeing perfectly good pieces end up in landfills. That’s why I appreciate places like this.” I sighed, “I just wish there were more places like Zaborski’s, especially closer to home.” She suggested, “Well, you can find excellent used fixtures elsewhere, like estate sales, antique stores, or yard sales. The lesson here is that when renovating your home, consider seeking out used fixtures that align with your design, save money, and add character.”
