MEET THE KERRIGAN TYSEN FAMILY

Photography by Jamie Meier

Theatre writers Kait Kerrigan and Nathan Tysen are celebrating their 9th wedding anniversary with their adaptation of The Great Gatsby at the Papermill Playhouse. Bookwriter / lyricist Kait Kerrigan and Tony-award-nominated lyricist Nathan Tysen first crossed paths 13 years ago at a writing retreat in Silicon Valley. “The world of musical theater is very small,’ says Nathan. “We knew of each other for years, but this was the first time we met.” Four years later, they married, and a year after that they welcomed their first child, Lucy, shortly followed by Nathan’s first Broadway show Tuck Everlasting. Nathan’s parents Harry and Linda Tysen found themselves visiting from Kansas often. The two generations decided to pool their resources and buy a two-family home together in Maplewood. “So many theatre people live in Maplewood,” Kait explains. “It didn’t take long for us to fall in love with the community.” Linda and Harry are affectionately called “Mimi” and “Bop” by Lucy, now age 8, and her almost three-year-old sister Tess. The couple live downstairs in the shared duplex. “My parents moved here to help us with the kids, but they’ve become very active in the community too,” Nathan says. “My mom volunteers at the library and my dad is a volunteer chaplain for the police department.” Mimi also joined a local Facebook group called “Grand Nannies,” a group of grandparents who moved to the area to support their kids. Bop sings with a glee club and barbershop quartet. • NATURAL GAS GRILL HOOKUPS • FREEZEPROOF HOSE SPIGOTS • WATER FILTERS AND TREATMENT UNITS “FOR YOUR PLUMBING & HEATING NEEDS CALL TORO TO THE RESCUE!” 973-672-1000
