SOMA Living November 2023
COALITION ON RACE The Community Coalition on Race held its annual awards event, “Celebrating Integration,” at the Orange Lawn Tennis Club. This year, they honored two exceptional members of the SOMA community. Gail Safian, a public relations specialist, creates impactful awareness campaigns on critical health issues like breast cancer, sickle cell disease, and organ donation specifically for the Black community. She is a valuable partner to the Coalition, contributing to events like the Juneteenth Celebration and Black History Month through her work at Durand-Hedden House & Garden, where she serves as the president since 2021.

Dr. Ahadi Bugg-Levine, the Board President of JESPY House, was also recognized for her outstanding contributions. JESPY House supports over 300 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in achieving independent living. Under Dr. Bugg-Levine’s leadership, JESPY House received its largest donation ever, $13.25 million, and collaborated with South Orange and nonprofit developers to create affordable housing. She actively participates in South Orange’s Master Plan steering committee and receives recognition as Villager of the Month for curating children’s book lists and expanding children’s content for local Black History Month celebrations. The event welcomed around 200 guests, including Maplewood Mayor Dean Dafis, South Orange Village President Sheena Collum, Chief Sally of Maplewood, Chief Morillo of South Orange, members of the Maplewood Township Committee, Superintendent Dr. Ronald Taylor, and Board of Education members. Assemblywoman Mila Jasey presented proclamations to the honorees and the organization. Sponsors included local businesses and community members who believe in promoting integration and inclusivity. —Written by Nancy Gagnier, Executive Director
