If you’re living in SOMA, you undoubtedly know Columbia High School is the birthplace of Ultimate Frisbee. But some of you may be wondering, what exactly is ultimate frisbee? It’s a thrilling seven versus seven person team sport played on a 40-yard wide by 120-yard long field. The objective is simple yet exhilarating: work the disc up the field and catch it in the marked end zones. But there’s more to it than meets the eye. In Ultimate Frisbee, players take on different positions. Handlers are responsible for creating throws, strategically passing the disc to the cutters. Cutters, on the other hand, make skillful routes on the field to catch the disc and score points. What sets Ultimate Frisbee apart is that it is a self-refereed sport, with players on the field making their own calls. It’s a true testament to the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship. The CHS Team remains a top competitor in the world of Ultimate Frisbee. This talented team travels extensively throughout the year, competing at a high level against other top teams on the East Coast. Last year, competed head-to-head with the best high school teams in the country at the national championships in Utah. The CHS Ultimate Frisbee club operates independently from the school. Players take charge of raising money for essentials such as new jerseys, tournament fees, and field rentals. This year, you can support the team by purchasing delicious fruit, meat, and vegetable pies during their Fall fundraiser.
