HOME DESIGN “Oh wow! It looks great,” said my real estate partner, Kim. “Yeah, the color works really well there. It was hard to find the right shade and balance,” I responded. We were standing in front of a house that we were prepping to put on the market. The seller was a long-time friend and client. I helped her sell another house in South Orange and move to this house in Maplewood a number of years ago. Now she is ready to downsize. “So, you just painted the door?” asked Kim. “Yes,” I replied. “She had the house painted only a couple of years ago, but the door color, also black, just wasn’t happening. It felt like a cave opening.” Kim laughed. “Well, this one’s pretty good. It pops out and catches your eye without being too bright or too vibrant. Like a lemon yellow.” “No, I didn’t want anything that screamed at you, not with the muddied green and muted black trim around it. The idea was to find a color that was contrasting with the

green but also had the same tone and shade to make it more harmonious with the whole house. That’s the key when picking a door color,” I explained. “Yeah, I don’t think a pure color would have worked here,” she replied. I added, “Although if you’re planning to live in the home for a while, then go for it! Paint whatever color brings you joy, so when you walk into your house, you’re happy. But…” “If you want to sell your house, curb appeal is really

important,” Kim chimed in. “Exactement, mon amie!”
