SOMA Living March 2024
HOME DESIGN “Mr. Doug! What do you want to do?” Alex, my contractor and longtime collaborator, asked with a hint of confusion. “I want to round off this peninsula,” I confidently replied. “With sticks!?” he exclaimed, a mixture of surprise and skepticism in his voice. I laughed, “Yes.” This was no ordinary task; it was for the Chloe Project, a comprehensive house renovation we aimed to sell on the open market. “I think people will love it! Or at least I hope they will,” I said, trying to ease his concern. We embarked on transforming plywood through meticulous cutting, scoring, wetting, and bending. Once dry, it was precisely affixed at the peninsula’s end, with sticks measured and placed with precision. The construction was not just a structure but a marvel of design. However, disaster struck due to my oversight as the designer. The stain chosen looked atrocious on the wood, a mistake I deeply regretted.
Feeling despondent, I dreaded the thought of starting over. “We’ll fix it,” my wife assured me, her confidence unwavering. Our solution came from an unexpected visit to Ricciardi Brothers Paint, where Bella Campanelli, a stain master from another store, was miraculously working that day. With her expertise, Bella mixed several stains to perfectly match the cabinetry, teaching me the application process. The peninsula turned out stunning, a testament to Bella’s skill and a serendipitous encounter that felt like the Universe’s guiding hand. This project, a blend of innovative design and collaborative spirit, showcased the beauty of creative problem-solving and the value of expert advice.
