Sport: Fencing/Foil My favorite thing about fencing is the mental as pect of the sport. People often say, “fencing is a physical game of chess” and I concur. I like that it is both an individual sport and a team sport; to be able to coach and support my teammates can be even more fulfill ing that winning my own bouts. Goals
Fencing requires a tremendous amount of focus, strategy, and skill. As I continue, my plan for myself is to start attending tournaments. I would like to get my E rating by the time I head off to college. At the time of writing this piece, the girls’ team just qualified to compete in the Final Four in NJ State Competition. We had a terrific record during our regular season, getting through to this level at states is just icing on the cake. Favorite Things: School Subject: Sciences Exercise: Squats Food: Truffle Risotto Least Favorite Things: School Subject: Spanish was the hardest for me Exercise: Mountain Climbers Food: Blue Cheese What I want to be when I grow up: Doctor Favorite Trip: I have been fortunate to be exposed to some amazing travel opportunities. Can’t decide be tween the trip to Italy and a trip that included He licopter-hiking trip in the Canadian Rockies. They are both favorites for different reasons. Hobbies: Hiking, painting, spending time with animals, gar dening, and arts & crafts
My main goal for this year has been to have as much of a complete fencing season as possible. As the girl’s overall captain of the fencing team at Columbia High School I wanted to share my pas sion of the sport and ensure that the team contin ues the legacy of growth and success it has gotten used to experiencing. When I first joined the team, I was instantly engulfed in the accepting and di verse community. Recreating this environment for underclassman has been just as crucial for me as succeeding in the sport. I work to better myself through fencing every day. It is the ultimate test of self-control and composure, of mental and physical fitness. As captain of the women’s team at CHS, I also have a responsibil ity to my teammates—demonstrating confidence and commitment gives them the encouragement to thrive in their bouts.
