SOMA Living March 2022
ARTIST OF THE MONTH From July 2018 to December 2020 – more than 900 days – South Orange based Sybil Archibald made a monotype every day. She worked from her studio, in hotels, and even in the hospital, and then posted them to social media with commentary about her process and her spiritual and artistic evolution. away and you can see it in the work. It expresses a lot of the struggle and emotion of that time. But being in the studio everyday healed me, and I am as well as I have been in years right now. As I healed, the work in the project changed to reflect that. The final images are in light, calm and full of color.
What is your inspiration?
Inspiration is overrated. An artist is compelled to create. Making art is life to an artist. Without it, we wither and die. An artist is an artist every moment of their life. Every second they live is funneled into their work.
Please describe your work, your medium/media, and your tools.
I’m fascinated by the places where the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds pulls thin. These are spaces we feel deeply, but have trouble articulating in words. They are also the places creativity flows into the world. My work finds these moments and brings their mystery and power into form.
Have you always wanted to be an artist?
I have always been an artist and I want to be who I am.
I work in many mediums, including printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, animation, installation, light, & sound. Most recently, I have been focusing on monotypes – a printmaking process that yields one unique image as opposed to editions.
What is your process of creation?
My process for making monotypes is about letting go. When I stand in front of my printing plate, I have no preconceptions. I just wait until an image flashes into my consciousness. I experience this as guidance from the universal flow of creativity that is always streaming into the world. There are images, ideas, and energies that want to be expressed and my job as an artist is to be a conduit.
