NORTH JERSEY PRIDE,INC
Photography by Jamie Meier
North Jersey Pride, Inc., a beacon of inclusivity and equality, traces its roots back to a poignant conversation that sparked a movement of unity and celebration. Founded by the visionary C.J. Prince, the organization emerged from a desire to create a sense of community and chosen family for LGBTQ individuals in the North Jersey area. Reflecting on the organization’s humble beginnings, Prince shared, “In 2011, I was having a drink with another mom and saying how I was kind of depressed I wouldn’t be able to go to New York City Pride that year. Our girls were five and two then. We had gone the year before, but the double stroller, missed naps, and too much sun conspired to make it a hellish outing. Somehow, as this friend and I were talking, the idea was born: if we can’t go to Pride, why not bring Pride to Maplewood?” The first year was just a small picnic in the park for about 100 people with a rented bounce house, a potluck picnic, and some friends playing music for free. Since then, it has grown to 4,000 attendees with corporate sponsorships, live music, an art fair, kids activities, and so much more. What continues to make the Maplewood Pride event so special is that it includes not just the families and kids. C.J. explains, “We like to say our festival is also ‘Ally Pride; because allies don’t have to stand on the sidelines and watch. They are full participants. The truth is, we need our allies to align with us, to stand with us, march with us, and raise their voices with ours. We need them to be up standers rather than bystanders—that’s how change really happens.”
6 somalivingmagazine@gmail.com
@somalivingmagazine
Over the years, North Jersey Pride blossomed into a dynamic force for change, hosting a range of events and activities that resonate with families and individuals from all walks of life. The organization’s flagship events, still include the North Jersey Pride Festival as well as the North Jersey Pride Run. Most recently, NJP launched the RAD Family Program, a support network tailored for transgender and gender-fluid children, teens, and their parents. Through RAD Family, North Jersey Pride is not only changing lives but also fostering a sense of belonging and understanding within the LGBTQ community. C.J. elaborates, “RAD Family is a testament to the power of support and acceptance in transforming the lives of young individuals navigating their gender identities.” The journey of North Jersey Pride is a testament to the resilience and commitment of its founder and team, who continue to champion diversity, equality, and love in all its forms. With a vibrant array of events and programs throughout the year, North Jersey Pride stands as a beacon of hope and unity for families and individuals seeking a welcoming community.

Yoni Kreger, YK Salon - As a long time client and friend, we knew Nubia’s new look had to reflect her busy lifestyle. After first analyzing her percentage of gray, Yoni decided to apply a demi permanent color to transition her gray softly and allow it to gradually come back in without a line of demarcation. Demi-permanent color is also extremely moisturizing and enhances shine, protecting her hair from the summer heat. He selected a neutral hair color to complement her warm complexion and eye color. A blowout and curls brought the whole look together, enhanced by YK Silk Road Anti-Frizz Serum to seal the cuticle and prepare it for curling. By using a low-heat tool, Yoni avoids damage while keeping the hair smooth. A touch more serum and hairspray and Nubia was ready for her photoshoot!
Lee Seidenberg Photography - I had a great experience working with Nubia and we captured some stunning images. She was a natural. For the yellow suit, we had her sit in a director’s chair and lit her with dramatic LED lighting, highlighting her authoritative presence as a TV/film producer and agency owner. For the gold dress, we lit the scene to look like she was on stage. For the blue beach sundress, we used a blue backdrop, added some wind for motion, and placed a crystal in front of the lens to create a dynamic visual effect.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
INSTRUCTIONS
STRAWBERRY CUPCAKES Prep Time: 30 mins Bake Time: 15 mins • Servings: 15 cupcakes I love these sweet, pink cupcakes because the natural flavor of the strawberries comes through, but in a subtle way. With a super light, delicate crumb and a swirl of strawberry buttercream, these pretty treats are sure to impress.
STRAWBERRY CUPCAKES • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line muffin pans with 15 cupcake liners. • In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda. • Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, blending well. • Add the sour cream, strawberry puree and food coloring and blend well. • Slowly add in the flour mixture and mix until just combined. • Divide the batter into the lined muffin cups and bake 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. • Cool for a couple mins in the pan, them remove to a wire rack. Cool completely before frosting. FLUFFY STRAWBERRY FROSTING • Heat the strawberry puree in a small saucepan over med heat. Reduce by half and cool to room temperature • Beat the butter and confectioners sugar until fluffy, about 2 minutes on med/high speed with an electric mixer. • Add the reduced strawberry puree and beat until fluffy. FINISH THE CUPCAKES • Frost the cooled cakes with the icing and (I love to pipe the frosting with a star or
large round tip) and garnish with halved strawberries or sprinkles if desired. Serve. • You can store the cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 4 days. RECIPE NOTES • Use the ripest and sweetest strawberries you can find for the best flavor. • The red food coloring isn’t a must, but it definitely gives the cakes a pretty pink hue. • An ice cream scoop makes easy and neat work of portioning out the cupcake batter into similar sizes. • Don’t over-bake the cupcakes! Check them around 13-14 mins and remove them as soon as a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean (which should be ab out 15 mins). • Don’t be tempted to frost the cupcakes until they’re totally cool so the frosting doesn’t melt or become too soft. • Be sure to let the reduced strawberry puree thoroughly cool before making the frosting. • Strawberry cupcakes are best served the day they’re made but they will keep for 2 days in an airtight container at room temperature or up to 4 days refrigerated. Bring to room temperature before serving.

When getting your home ready for the market, strategic upgrades can significantly enhance your home’s appeal and increase its market value. Investing in specific improvements can help you realize a greater return on investment and attract more potential buyers. Applying a fresh coat of paint and replacing old rugs can create a strong first impression and often recoup more than their costs. Similarly, updating a kitchen with cabinet and countertop resurfacing can be beneficial. Enlisting a stager to showcase your home is also a wise investment. Proper staging helps buyers form an emotional connection with your home, allowing them to envision it as their own. While improvements play a crucial role, homeowners should be cautious about over-improving their properties. High-end renovations may not yield a good return if the property is overpriced compared to similar homes in the area. Selling a home “as is” can also raise concern among buyers about potential issues. For guidance on preparing and staging your home for a successful sale, contact me for a complimentary home walk-through to assess necessary repairs or improvements before listing.

metals is a great way to create a visually stimulating and dynamic kitchen. For instance, pairing sleek stainless-steel appliances with warm brass or copper faucets, different cabinet handles, all can add depth to the space,” I explained. “And the different finishes will complement different kitchen elements, like stainless steel on the big appliances, mixed with brass faucets that give an elegant touch, mixed with matte black cabinet pulls makes for a contemporary touch,” she proudly explained (see picture below). “By George, I think you’ve got it!” I exclaimed. Mixing metals is a great approach to creating spaces that are not only functional but also visually captivating and reflective of your taste and style.
“What about it?” I replied. I was talking to my fabulously stylish client, discussing the details of her kitchen renovation design. “What metal finish should we choose for the finishes?” she inquired. “Well, we can pick one finish for everything like brushed nickel, chrome, black, or brass. But we can certainly pick different finishes for different items.” “You mean it all doesn’t have to match?” she asked. “Oh no, not at all,” I replied. “The traditional notion of matching every element is kind of out. Or at least it doesn’t have to be adhered to as it was in the past. Nowadays, the concept of mixing metals in finishes has really taken hold; it’s now a way to personally express oneself.” “Really?” she asked in disbelief. “Oh yeah. FINANCIAL FOCUS
MARKET CYCLES
Responding to market cycles requires understanding their nature and impact on investments. Market cycles, influenced by economic fluctuations, can be anticipated by tracking indicators like employment, consumer spending, interest rates, and inflation. While markets often precede economic cycles, attempting to time market movements can be risky. Instead of reacting impulsively to market cycles, focus on a long-term, diversified investment strategy aligned with your goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon. Diversification across asset classes like stocks, bonds, and mutual funds can help mitigate volatility in specific sectors. Avoid basing investment decisions solely on market cycles. Market timing can lead to missed opportunities or unnecessary risks. Instead, maintain a disciplined approach focused on long-term growth while considering market cycles as informative factors rather than sole determinants of investment decisions. By following a well-thought-out investment plan and staying diversified, you can navigate market cycles with confidence and work towards achieving your financial objectives over time.

FROM THE DOCTOR SHOULD I GO TO A CHIROPRACTOR? If you’re contemplating a visit to a chiropractor, you may have heard success stories from friends who swear by their adjustments. Now, as your back pain worsens, you’re considering if chiropractic care could provide relief. Chiropractors perform adjustments to correct spinal subluxations, which can disrupt nerve impulses and affect various body functions. Using hands, instruments, or specialized tables, chiropractors apply precise force to improve physical function and alleviate pain.

These adjustments involve gentle techniques like stretching, rocking, or subtle pressure to realign vertebrae without forcing them. Whether you suffer from back pain, neck issues, headaches, or joint problems, chiropractic care may offer relief and enhance your quality of life. To determine if chiropractic care is suitable for you, a thorough examination including history, thermal imaging, and orthopedic assessments is conducted. If necessary, digital imaging helps visualize any structural issues. Following this evaluation, a personalized treatment plan is devised to address your specific needs and goals.

ANKLE FRACTURES
As the summer heat increases outdoor activities, ankle injuries become more common. Fractures usually result from high-energy actions like jumping or falls. The most frequent occurrences are in females aged 75-84 and males aged 15-24. Ankle fractures are categorized as unimalleolar, bimalleolar, or trimalleolar. Unimalleolar fractures affect one malleolus, bimalleolar fractures affect two, and trimalleolar

fractures involve three malleoli. The Danis-Weber system classifies fractures based on the distal fibula fracture line, with type A fractures treated conservatively, type B fractures requiring surgery if unstable, and type C fractures typically needing surgical fixation.

Evaluation, imaging, and motion assessment are crucial in treatment. Physical therapists focus on restoring mobility, managing pain, and stabilizing the joint for healing. Surgical fixation may be needed and is typically performed within 24 hours or after swelling subsides. Weight-bearing precautions post-surgery assist in the healing process, with patients advised to progress cautiously under PT guidance.

FASHION In the fashion realm, hair plays a crucial role in complementing garments, enhancing narratives, and reinforcing stylistic statements. Fashion editorial hair goes beyond mere styling; it represents creativity, boundary-pushing, and reflecting the current cultural spirit. High fashion editorials demonstrate hair as a form of artistic expression and storytelling. Hairstylists work with designers to create avant-garde looks that align with collection themes, whether futuristic, whimsical, or nostalgic. These creations captivate audiences, inspire trends, and redefine beauty standards. The evolution of fashion editorial hair reflects broader cultural changes. Diversity is increasingly celebrated, with models showcasing various hair textures and styles. This inclusivity challenges traditional beauty ideals, promoting authenticity and representation on a global scale. Fashion editorial hair also influences trends in mainstream beauty and consumer markets. Runway experimentation leads to the development of new techniques and products that impact hairstyling practices worldwide. Brands respond by creating specialized lines to meet diverse hair needs, blurring the lines between high fashion and everyday beauty routines. Ultimately, fashion editorial hair is a dynamic force that fosters creativity and shapes perceptions of style. It exemplifies the collaborative nature of fashion, where hair becomes a transformative element in visual storytelling. As trends evolve and boundaries get pushed, fashion editorial hair remains at the forefront, defining the leading edge of beauty and expression in the fashion industry.
Terrell Slappy, a second-generation prodigy, began his hairstyling journey at age 10, drawing from a childhood rich in creativity and performance. With extensive experience styling for major networks such as VH1, MTV, and OWN, and as the key hairstylist for NYC’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Terrell has worked with icons like Zendaya and Angela Simmons.
