FROM THE DOCTOR In today’s tech-driven age, many households have at least one computer and a cell phone. Using phones as computer substitutes often leads to prolonged periods of looking down, causing neck pain, stiffness, and discomfort due to overworked neck muscles. This prompts the question: what is text or “tech” neck, and what are its symptoms? The head, depending on its angle, can weigh 27 to 60 pounds, straining neck muscles when faced downward for hours daily. Symptoms of text neck include neck pain, stiffness, headaches, spasms, numbness, tingling, weakness, and sharp pain when looking down. Managing this condition involves limiting device usage or consulting a physical therapist. Treatment often entails a comprehensive symptom evaluation, general exercises, postural correction, and re education to alleviate the impact of phone and computer activities on posture. Regular breaks and maintaining a comfortable distance from devices are also recommended to reduce joint pressure and stress. Consulting a physical therapist is crucial, as pre-existing issues may influence the treatment plan.
