HOME DESIGN

OH, THOSE TRICKY WHITES!

“See these walls?” I point to the large, freshly painted white walls. “This is actually the second time we painted them. The first white looked way too yellow. And yes, we had large swatches painted on the wall first. It’s just that when you paint really large walls, the underlying color tones in a paint seem to magnify. And it’s especially tricky when you try to factor in the different types of light that hits the wall throughout the day. White is tough, but with a little patience you’ll get it right.”

“So, what shade of white paint is a good color?”, asked my partner Kim. “They’re all good!”, I respond enthusiastically. We were standing in a huge open kitchen with a wall of double high, southern facing windows. This was a job site, as I was remodeling this kitchen, the style of which was Northern California modern. “White paint,” I explain, “is tough to get right. You can look at paint chips, look at larger swatches and you think you’ve found the perfect white for your house and BAM! You get it up on your walls and it looks totally different!” “But”, Kim says starting to school me, “If you paint big swatches of the paint of the walls first, you can see what you’re getting. At least that’s what someone who calls himself a designer once told me.” She snickers and gives me her snide smile.
