FACES IN THE CROWD
On a Monday during MLK Day, a small group of volunteers gathered at the S kate House to set up the Lumineries around the duck pond and throughout the park. This is an annual tradition in SOMA on MLK Day.

MEET THE LEONE McLOUGHLIN FAMILY The Stuffed Shirt, Bunny’s, Town Hall Deli, O’Reily’s, Cryan’s, Joe’s Pizzeria and Sonny’s Bagels. If these businesses set off a wave of nostalgia for all things Maplewood and South Orange, you are likely a lifelong resident of the area. If you answer the question, “MAPSO or SOMA?” with “Neither” your longevity is confirmed. This is definitely the case for the Leone and McLoughlin families who, for three generations, have called this area their home.

Tiffany’s parents, Carole and Louis raised Tiffany and her four sisters (Jenna, Margaux, Carissa, and Olivia) in South Orange. Tiffany shared, “Three of the five sisters are teachers which is true testament to the positive experiences we have all had at South Mountain Elementary school and the teachers who have inspired us.” Tiffany is a preschool teacher at TSTI in South Orange where all five girls attended preschool and religious school. Sister Carissa teaches kindergarten with her own former teacher at South Mountain School. Her sister, Olivia, teaches fourth grade in the Bronx. Ryan’s family is equally tied to SOMA. His parents, Lynne and Gene, are from Maplewood and South Orange respectively. They married and raised their three children in Maplewood. Ryan’s sister, Jessica, married Greg from South Orange. His younger sister, Lauren, married Pete. He is also from South Orange and they were high school sweethearts. Even Ryan’s grandparents, Viola and Clyde, were from SOMA, married, and continued to raise their family in Maplewood.

There’s something about talking to a couple in their late thirties who met and became high school sweethearts that is entertaining. They finish each other’s sentences, swap knowing glances, and have the kind of snappy banter that only comes from being together for so many years. The couple mentioned their friend, Alex, who in high school wrote a little ditty about them. He used to sing, “It’s the Ryan and Tiffany show, doot!” Tiffany and Ryan have two boys, Vann and Harris. Ryan and Tiffany bought their first house in South Orange on Meeker Street. They laughed, “We bought the smallest house in South Orange.” They made some renovations and, once they had their first child, quickly outgrew the home. Sometime during the pandemic - their mutual childhood friend, Brian, came over for dinner and suggested they buy the house where he grew up in Maplewood. Tiffany elaborated, “Growing up, Brian was one of seven kids and the house was always full of kids and their friends. The house was well loved and lived in but was definitely in need of some TLC.” Tiffany and Ryan bought the house and spent a full year remodeling to make it their own. While Ryan is the general manager of General Plumbing Supply he laughed, “I’m not handy. I have a childhood friend from Maplewood who is a pilot but also extremely handy who helped us with all of the remodeling.” In keeping with the tradition of the house, Tiffany and Ryan love entertaining. Most weekends, you can find their house filled with family and friends. They also love bumping around town to all of their favorite spots both old and new.

SOMA DREAM TEAM MAKEOVER
This month’s Dream Team feature is Sanda Charlap. Sandra is a local painter, artist, and teacher. She’s lived in SOMA for 22 years. She runs art classes and camps for Maplewood Recreation
Sandra is a very evolved woman, mother and artist who was exciting and inspiring to work with. She has a vision for herself and is ready to wear very fashion-forward styles, as she elevates with her artwork and business. This photo shoot was a great transition to showcase her beauty and playful fashion. I hope to continue to work with Sandra, styling her and providing wardrobe , as
and teaches art to the residents at Jespy House. She has a show opening March 3rd at the 1978 Gallery along with artist Jocelyn Fine. You can see her work at whereivebeenwhereimgoing.com, sandracharlap.com, and theillustratedpet.com. She wanted to work with the Dream Team so her outside could match how she felt transformed on the inside.
she breaks out even more as a formidable artist in the Jersey and NYC area. - Julie Perlow Greene- Retail Therapy
Maura’s Style Card Session revealed so much about her personal style and the way she wants to live and work. Maura has a nurturing side as well as a passion for bringing well-being to her clients in her yoga practice. All of us could see that in the high contrast, black and white zebra print blazer that she rocked in the photo session and the caramel suede, fringed dress. The most daring part of the photoshoot was when Maura took a chance and wore the black dress with the gold chains and the red sequin dress. Both showed off her incredible figure and - the best part - her dreamy, wonderful tattoos. - Kerry Cordero, Inspired Style What a pleasure it was working with Sandra! I wanted to make sure that her inner natural beauty and creative energy would shine through the images. I did a sheer coverage that showed her beautiful skin and a red bold
After speaking with the lovely Sandra Charlap, I was able to find a perfect solution for her chill-seeking canine companion - Astraea&Co CBD Dog Treats in scrumptious beef and bacon flavors. To aid her nighttime restlessness, we brainstormed some innovative options like
Bhumi’s Dark Chocolate Bar infused with CBN, High Tea Good Night Irene Sleepytime tea blend, as well as Astraea&Co.’s sleep patches. And lastly, to kick off 2023 on a healthful note Sandra treated herself to Vybes’ 4 Pack of delicious CBD Juices! - Jill Cohen, TheCannaBossLady.

the look at home, every day . - Yoni Kreger, YK Salon Sandra is a character. And fittingly enough, we had a wardrobe that reminded us of
lip to a sheer berry tint to compliment her undertones. Plus cream blush of lip color to mimic flush and soft taupes with chocolate smudged tight eyeliner for theeyes. Intheend we decided to add some natural end wispy lashes ;) for fun - Tanya Marques, Makeup artist My aim for Sandra’s hairstyle was for it to reflect her infectious, bubbly personality. After assessing her skin tone, eye color, and face shape, I created a rich, warm base color with soft, honey-toned highlights to add dimension. I tapered the cut on the sides and the back, elevating the length toward the top to accentuate and enhance her natural curl texture. By styling with our YK Curl Defining Cream, Sandra can easily recreate
characters. From the Princess Leia dress to the Big Bird Jacket to the Barbar the Elephant shirt. For the jumper, we kept the lighting directional and soft. My assistant Rowan, chose the perfect tan paper from all our backdrops to match the belt. The yellow feather jacket called for outdoor sunlight. We got lucky with a sliver of sun coming through on the cloudy day. - Lee Seidenberg Photography We’re looking for interesting people for upcoming issues. RECIPE OF THE MONTH
INSTRUCTIONS
BEEF STROGANOFF Prep time: 15 mins • Cook time: 30 mins Servings: 6 This Beef Stroganoff is layered with flavor. It starts with strips of sirloin, browned quickly over high heat. It boasts a beefy mushroom sauce oozing with umami and is finished with a healthy scoop of sour cream swirled in just before serving on a bed of noodles.
• Heat the oil in a large heavy bottomed pot or dutch oven until hot but not smoking. • Toss the steak strips with salt, pepper, and 2 Tbsp flour and add to the pan in a single layer. Sear quickly and remove to a plate. (Do this in two steps if necessary so as not to crowd the pan.) • Add the butter to the pan and add the minced shallot. Cook for 2-3 mins until golden and then add the mushrooms. Season with salt and pepper. Cook over med/high heat until the mushrooms are golden brown and have lost their moisture. • Add the garlic and cook just until fragrant. Reduce the heat to medium. • Add the anchovy paste, Dijon and Worcestershire sauce and stir. Sprinkle in the remaining flour, scraping up the brown bits on the bottom of the pan. (Add a smidge more butter if the pan is too dry.) Cook for 2 mins, stirring constantly.
• Deglaze with the wine, bring to a boil and reduce slightly. Add the stock and thyme sprigs and cook for about 5 mins, allowing the stock to reduce slightly. • Reduce the heat to low and stir in the sour cream, stirring constantly until smooth. DON’T allow the sauce to boil or it may break and curdle. Season generously with salt and pepper. • Return the steak to the pan and simmer very gently over low heat until warmed through. Remove the thyme sprigs and discard. Serve over cooked pasta and sprinkle with minced parsley if desired.
INGREDIENTS
2 Tbsp olive oil 1/4 cup AP flour, divided
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1/2 cup dry red wine 1 1/2 cups beef stock 6 sprigs fresh thyme 1 cup sour cream 10 oz wide or curly pasta, cooked according to pkg directions Kosher salt and black pepper minced parsley, for garnish
2 lbs boneless strip steak, sliced into thin strips 2 Tbsp unsalted butter 1 shallot, minced 12 oz mushrooms, sliced (shiitake, cremini or a mix) 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp anchovy paste 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard

FINANCIAL FOCUS DON’T LET FEAR DRIVE INVESTMENT DECISIONS In the past year, we’ve seen some big swings in the financial markets. This volatility may make you feel as if you have little control over your investment success. But the truth is, you do have more control than you might think — as long as you don’t let fear guide your decisions. Investment-related fear can manifest itself in a few different ways: • Fear of loss – Some investors may emphasize avoiding losses more than achieving gains. A highly conservative approach carries its own risk — the risk of not achieving enough growth to stay ahead of inflation or meet long term goals such as a comfortable retirement. Create an investment strategy that accommodates your personal risk tolerance and time horizon. • Fear of missing out – Watching others sell when the market falls or seeing them invest in “hot” companies may seem attractive. But buying or selling investments should be considered to help advance your long-term financial strategy — not in response to what others are doing. • Fear of the unknown – Some investors stick to only products and companies they know well. To help reduce the impact of market volatility, it’s a good idea to spread your investment dollars across a range of industries and geographical regions or even include bonds and government securities (Remember: diversification does not protect you against all potential losses). • Fear of admitting failure – Sometimes, a particular investment or strategy doesn’t work out, but an investor is determined to stick with it - even if it leads to financial loss. Don’t let his happen to you. If it becomes apparent you need to change your investment approach, consult with a licensed professional, and move on to something better.

MEET THE MERCHANT Maura Hargrave-Kerns is a former Clinton School special education teacher who is opening an AIR® Aerial Fitness franchise location in South Orange. Aerial fitness is a gymnastics based fitness class using circus performance suspension equipment. Maura explains, “We fuse elements of suspension training, Pilates, ballet, and HIIT to create fun, effective, and accessible workouts. I grew up in MapSO (ok….SOMA) and I am so excited to be pursuing my dream and sharing my passion with the community here.” What differentiates The AIR® Aerial Fitness studio from similar programs is combining different aerial elements to make them more accessible to people. In addition to group fitness classes there will be private classes for kids and adults of all fitness levels. The location will also host aerial retreats, teacher training, as well as sensory-based
services for clients of all ages and abilities. Maura is eager to open the facility and begin hosting eight week sessions (to conclude with an aerial recital), summer and weekday camps when schools are closed, birthday parties, scouting badge programs, and more. Prior to purchasing the franchise, Maura also worked as a
freelance Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT 200) and spent two years becoming an AIR® Master Trainer. The new business allows her to combine her professional teaching experience with her love of fitness and performance exercise. Maura adds, “We are still getting our feet wet in opening up the business, but I look forward to contributing to and building relationships with the Achieve Foundation and Columbia High School Scholarship Fund. Both of these organizations do so much to benefit the kids and teachers in our community.”

FROM THE DOCTOR Shoveling snow incorrectly is a great way to injure your lowback. The right equipment along with proper technique can make a big difference. Shoveling the snow early, before it has had a chance to melt, re-freeze and glue itself to your walkway, will make your job much easier. Pushing two inches of dusty snow off your driveway three times is much easier than shoveling six inches of packed ice once. This will also help to avoid driving your car over the snow and packing the ice down further. If searing low back pain is not something you are looking forward to, follow these simple guidelines: SHOVELING SNOW SAFELY
Meet the Natural Pain Relievers at South Orange Chiropractic Center Moving people from pain to wellness. Dr. Stephen Levine • Dr. Mark Roczey • Dr. Mark Sielski 60 First Street, South Orange, NJ 07079 973-761-0022 Go to SouthOrangeChiropractic.com to download our FREE E-book on Health and Wellness
• Purchase a medium size, plastic, ergonomic shovel.
• Make a plan so you only have to move snow once.
• Push snow rather than lifting it.
• Squat with your legs rather than bending your low back.
• Never “throw” snow, especially when it gets wet and heavy.
• Shovel early in the morning while the snow is still light.
• Take frequent breaks; or shovel in 15 minute increments.
• If you already have a back problem, see us for a complimentary check-up with thermal imaging before it snows
and get the appropriate exercises. USE PROPER TECHNIQUE:
• Lift as little snow as possible. Pushing snow, rather than scooping snow will significantly reduce the level of stress on your body. • Use your legs. Because of the uneven terrain, bending at some point will likely be unavoidable. Rather than bending at your low back, bend slightly at your hips and squat down with your legs keeping your low back straight. This will take pressure off your low back and allow you to lift without straining a muscle or injuring a joint.

FROM THE DOCTOR Functional medicine is a hybrid between traditional medicine and holistic medicine. For the uninitiated, holistic medicine is comprised of both physical, mental, emotional and sometimes even spiritual health. It should be applied by a licensed professional, with patients abiding by the doctor’s instructions to progressively bounce back to a healthy life. This form of treatment offers many benefits, which include longer appointments (to uncover root causes) and alternative treatments (ex.,herbal remedies). Auto Immune diseases are among the most common health concerns addressed by Functional Medicine. These are diseases or conditions where the body starts mistakenly attacking healthy cells. Autoimmune diseases include: alopecia, Crohn’s disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, AIDS, and vasculitis. Chronic pain and related symptoms are also treated with Functional Medicine. Chronic pain, inflammation, and stress can last for years after the original illness or injury has resolved . The body gets used to operating as if something is wrong, so it continues to display potentially debilitating symptoms that can affect different body areas for an extended period. Typically, the traditional doctors prescribe pain medication, which lets the patient regain some normal function for short periods but doesn’t figure out how to treat the root causes of the pain, such as: back pain, arthritis, headaches, chronic fatigue syndrome, endometriosis, fibromyalgia, nerve damage, unexplained weight changes, digestive disorders (IBS, IBD, acid reflex). WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE?

SOMA ADULT SCHOOL
SOMAS CELEBRATES NINE DECADES OF LIFELONG LEARNING…AND FUN
South Orange-Maplewood Adult School Association, SOMAS, is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2023.
Started in the midst of the depression, local leaders created SOMAS as an evening school for adults. Out-of-work teachers developed affordable classes to entertain and/or train our under-employed citizens. SOMAS is the oldest operating adult school in New Jersey. It is nationally renowned and, in 2000, recognized as “A Local Legacy” by the Library of Congress. The Adult School remains a non-profit, non-governmental agency funded by class tuitions, gifts from its Friends Campaign, and contributions from Sponsors, most of them local businesses. SOMAS is marking those nine decades with a celebratory 90th Anniversary logo, new initiatives, and a renewed focus on its ongoing mission, “to offer our communities a wealth of opportunities to learn, grow, and have fun,” explains Board President Bonnie Kenselaar. Annually, this includes 2500 students, aged 5 to 90+ enrolling in 250 courses, lectures, and special events. Each designed to, “enrich the mind, exercise the body, and feed the soul.” Offerings include art, music, business and finance, fitness and recreation, languages, and technology. Children’s after school programming includes fitness classes and Suzuki violin lessons. “The 90th Anniversary spotlight shines most brightly on our students,” said Kenselaar. “Special thanks to our students and to those who take a class, attended a lecture, an event, or a trip. You are the reason the South Orange-Maplewood Adult School exists. And the reason we keep growing.” With over 100 classes in our NEW SPRING 2023 catalog, there’s something for everyone!

EDUCATION
ACADEMIC STAMINA
Stamina (n.) “ability to sustain prolonged physical or mental effort.” Working towards a goal requires stamina usually developed over time. I was a bodybuilder, but I started off out of shape. It took many reps, heavier weights, increasing the speed on the treadmill to build up the stamina necessary to get through tough workouts and change my body. It hurt to grow and improve, but over time I came to love it. I looked forward to challenging my muscles, heart and lungs to keep up with the heavier weights, faster speeds I (or rather, my trainers) demanded. With work I enjoyed stamina I had never known before. I’ve noticed it’s the same with children, the range of academic stamina varies a lot. I do have students who come to me with high levels of academic stamina and desire for greater challenges. The other day a new student in one of our test prep classes said, “Give me LOTS of homework!” and others have been asking for additional packets to move forward faster. These students are easy to work with, but I recognize they have already trained for years to become this “strong”. Other students are not in top “shape” when it comes to academic stamina, but in “training” them, I see it grow. A mom and dad recently recounted the growth they observe in their child since he began “training” with us. He went from frustration and resistance with us and crying and tearing up packets at home, to dancing into our center, both prepared and eager, with a video to show me him completing his work at his kitchen table at home. It took persistent training with us and support from home to get here. He is now taking on the most challenging math class in his grade, which he approaches with confidence. They note he is stronger, has greater resilience and stamina, resulting from his math workouts with us. He can take on whatever is presented to him in school, because he has developed the stamina: focus, persistence, confidence, and strength, to succeed. It is tremendous.

REAL ESTATE LOST AMUSEMENT PARK
Once upon a time there was an amusement park in New Jersey that had the Nation’s largest fresh water swimming pool, the largest carousel
in North America and was visited by millions of people. This wonderland was not located on the Jersey Shore, but straddled the border of Irvington and Maplewood and was called Olympic Park. The original property, in 1887 with a modest dance hall, bowling alley and beer garden. The park slowly grew in popularity when in 1904, it was purchased by two local businessmen and was named Olympic Park. The new owners added new attractions including a Ballroom, an Opera House and a 400-table restaurant. The park showcased acrobats, dancers, musicians and circus performers with lions and tigers. Attendance grew to 500,000 visitors a year. In 1920, mechanical rides: a Ferris Wheel, Roller Coaster and Fun House. The largest carousel in the United States was installed; it featured 80 wooden horses, hundreds of electric lights and a band organ imported from Italy. The largest freshwater pool on the east coast was constructed. The park remained popular through the late 1950’s but declining attendance and changing times saw Olympic Park close in 1965. A small memorial on Chancellor Avenue marks where the entrance used to be. Today, Olympic park is all but forgotten but if you ever find yourself in Disney World, just outside of Cinderella’s Castle, take a spin on the Prince Charming Carousel. It’s the very same Carousel that turned in Olympic Park back in 1929 and you’ll enjoy a wonderful ride of Maplewood history.

HOME DESIGN
OH, THOSE TRICKY WHITES!
“See these walls?” I point to the large, freshly painted white walls. “This is actually the second time we painted them. The first white looked way too yellow. And yes, we had large swatches painted on the wall first. It’s just that when you paint really large walls, the underlying color tones in a paint seem to magnify. And it’s especially tricky when you try to factor in the different types of light that hits the wall throughout the day. White is tough, but with a little patience you’ll get it right.”
“So, what shade of white paint is a good color?”, asked my partner Kim. “They’re all good!”, I respond enthusiastically. We were standing in a huge open kitchen with a wall of double high, southern facing windows. This was a job site, as I was remodeling this kitchen, the style of which was Northern California modern. “White paint,” I explain, “is tough to get right. You can look at paint chips, look at larger swatches and you think you’ve found the perfect white for your house and BAM! You get it up on your walls and it looks totally different!” “But”, Kim says starting to school me, “If you paint big swatches of the paint of the walls first, you can see what you’re getting. At least that’s what someone who calls himself a designer once told me.” She snickers and gives me her snide smile.

LUNAR NEW YEAR COMING TOGETHER DURING LUNAR NEW YEAR For some, the new year rings in when the calendar turns from December 31 to January 1. For many, it happens on Lunar New Year (based on the cycles of the moon). This year, it begins on January 22, as the Chinese Year of the Rabbit: an animal that embodies elegance, peace, and a dash of luck. Lunar New Year is a special time with tons of traditions, each with a special meaning. Cleaning the home represents getting rid of any bad luck from the previous year. Red is also a lucky color to wear, as it represents happiness and good luck. My favorite tradition is getting together with loved ones for the reunion meal, which signifies family unity and togetherness. There are many symbolic dishes such as fish (abundance), sticky rice cake (prosperity), dumplings (wealth), and noodles (longevity). Wishing everyone health, happiness, and prosperity in the new year! Join us next year for the Annual Lunor Fest, NJ organized by SOMA CCW.

TAX UPDATE
DEPENDENT/CHILD TAX CREDITS FOR 2022
We are excited to announce the merger of the CPA firms of Couto DeFranco, CPAs and Marco DeLuca, CPA.
Every year we go through tax law changes that affect our taxes one way or another. This year is no exception. One area of change that may work in your favor is the child tax credit. In 2021, the IRS made advance payments to you for each of your qualifying children, but you had to reduce the credit on your tax return. If you received an advance payment of $1,500 for your 10 year old, the credit on your 2021 tax return went from $3,000 to $1,500. As there were no advance payments in 2022, and despite the credit being reduced to $2,000 per qualifying child, you may have an additional $500 added to your refund this year. However, if you have qualifying children under the age of 13 and paid for their care while you were at work, you may well experience a reduction to your refund. The maximum credit now drops from $4,000 (in 2021 -per child up to two children) to a maximum credit of $1,050 for each child for 2022. You may also benefit from increases to areas including the standard deduction, teacher expense deduction, standard milage rates and inflation adjusted income tax brackets for ordinary and long term capital gains. There are many more tax law changes for 2022. If you want more information, or you wish to hire a licensed tax preparer, please contact our firm so we may assist you.

Valentine’s Day is a day to express love and appreciation to people in our life we care about this month. How can you celebrate yourself this February by looking at how you can better love yourself. For those struggling with an eating disorder or a negative relationship with food, body image and low self-esteem it can be hard to make time for self-care or find ways to love yourself. Whether you’re in a relationship or not, challenging yourself to celebrate adoration and self-nurturing may enhance your healing. Here are some ways to love and nurture yourself and celebrate Valentine’s Day all month long. Act on your needs. Self-love flourishes when we can step away from our negative messages, and self-destructive behavior. Pay attention to your emotional and physical needs. Begin to understand how your disordered eating keeps you distracted from your feelings and what you truly need. Be mindful during meals and focus on nourishing and delicious foods that you enjoy, rather than worry about calories. Find an activity that brings you pleasure without worrying about whether you are doing it perfectly or “good enough.” Find time to disconnect from social media. Removing yourself from your on-line world can allow you to stop comparing yourself to others. Taking this time can remind you of what you love about yourself. Spend time with people who bring a positive and caring light to your life. Evaluate those toxic relationships that drain you and leave you feeling bad about yourself. Write or find a creative way to express the ways you love yourself. Embrace your individuality. Invest time this month in celebrating and discovering the wonder of being you! BECOME YOUR OWN ST. MEDICARE
SPECIAL NEEDS PLANS
Special Needs Plans (or SNPs) are Medicare Advantage plans that are tailored to meet the needs of individuals with certain health conditions or circumstances. Special medical situations require specialized care. Medicare special needs plans were created with this principle in mind. Dual-eligible Special Needs Plans There are three different types of SNPs- Chronic Condition, Institutional and Dual-eligible Special Needs Plans (or DSNPs). This month I will write about DSNPs. They are available to individuals who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid. In many cases Medicaid will pay the premiums, along with a significant portion of copays and deductibles. The benefit of a DSNP include the following: • monthly and/or quarterly benefits for over-the-counter products and healthy foods • telemedicine services • transportation to appointments and pharmacies • dental, hearing and vision benefits • gym memberships Enrollment in any SNP is based upon geographical area, and the individual must maintain enrollment in original Medicare. Part B premiums will still be paid to Social Security unless Medicaid eligibility covers those. The SNP may charge a premium separately, and the patient may also be responsible for copays and deductibles as determined by the plan. Those who become eligible for a SNP at any point during the year are eligible for a Special Enrollment Period during which they can select a SNP. Many participants are not aware of these benefits and their eligibility. Determining eligibility for this plan is where insurance professionals like me can be of help. Please reach out to me for a no obligation consultation.
