MEET THE MOSHER FAMILY When Rebeca Mosher and her family decided to move from Jersey City to South Orange three years ago they were in search of more space and better school systems. Their realtor suggested they consider South Orange along with Maplewood, and it turned out to be a great decision. The Mosher family’s journey to South Orange is filled with fun stories, including how Rebeca and Geoff met almost 15 years ago. “It was a meet cute type of situation,” Rebeca recalled. “I was moving out of my place in Jersey City and needed help with some furniture. I asked Geoff and his friend, who were walking by my place on their way to a bar, to help me move a couch. Having just come from moving one of their mutual friends, they joked about looking like movers, but they graciously helped me. That night, we all connected, became friends, and a month later, Geoff and I started dating. We got married a year after.” Their son Klaus, who is nine years old, is thriving in their new environment. He enjoys biking around their neighborhood with friends and playing video games like Roblox and Minecraft. “I like to bike around South Orange, especially Tuxedo Park,” Klaus said. He also enjoys getting bubble tea from a local spot called Chipoba. The Moshers are a musical family, attending concerts regularly. “Klaus has been going to concerts since he was six,” Rebeca shared. “His first concert was Tears For Fears.” Klaus takes piano and guitar lessons at Mark Murphy and has perfect pitch. “He makes up his own songs and has the heart of a composer,” Rebeca said proudly. Rebeca was once a professional jazz singer and composer. But when their son Klaus was born she transitioned into giving her already existing professional

organizing business a stronger push. The name of her organizing business, “Space Composer” is a nod to her musical background. Geoff is equally creative. He played trumpet in school and sang in various punk bands. “I had bands from when I was a sophomore in high school up through college,” Geoff said. “Later on, I was in a band that was kind of like a sketch comedy/rock opera troupe. We were one of a kind and were moderately successful” Geoff works in IT and currently co-hosts a radio show called “Dirtbag Paradise” on Maker Park Radio, a heavy metal show that branches off into various often esoteric musical directions. Rebeca, originally from Spain, ensures that Klaus is completely bilingual. “He’s in a program with the Spanish consulate for sons and daughters of expats,” Rebeca explained. “He also has a private tutor on Fridays, and we go to Spain every summer, which helps him a lot. He’s about 80% fluent now.” The family enjoys spending time together, often going to the movies at SOPAC, which is just ten minutes down the street from their home. “We go to the movies a lot,” Rebeca said. “We’re planning to see a new Christmas movie after the photo shoot for this article today.” The Mosher family’s story is one of creativity, community, and finding the perfect place to call home. With their diverse backgrounds and shared love for music and adventure, they have truly embraced their new life in South Orange.

HEALTH & WELLNESS The holiday season can become a whirlwind of stress, overeating, and disrupted routines. Instead of fixating on food restrictions, focus on calming your overwhelmed nervous system. Set boundaries to protect your physical and mental health, which can reduce stress, improve sleep, and enhance self care. Prioritizing your well-being supports your stress response, inflammation levels, and overall hormonal balance, enabling you to make mindful choices that boost energy, mood, and metabolic function. Remember, boundaries reflect the importance of your relationships, including the one with your body. How Boundaries Support Hormonal Health: Stress Reduction: Boundaries help lower stress, a key factor in hormonal imbalance. Overwhelm triggers stress hormones like cortisol, disrupting hormonal balance. Improved Sleep: Clear boundaries foster a restful sleep environment, crucial for hormone regulation during sleep. Enhanced Self-Care: Boundaries allow prioritization of self-care activities, such as exercise and meditation, which regulate hormones and promote well-being.
How Boundaries Support Nutritional Health: Mindful Eating: Boundaries encourage mindful eating, helping you tune into hunger and fullness cues. Blood Sugar Balance: A consistent eating schedule leads to more energy and fewer cravings. Attitude: Set boundaries around diet discussions to protect your attitude and mood while supporting a flexible approach to nutrition. Remember: Setting boundaries isn’t selfish; it’s essential for a healthy, fulfilling life.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
CANDIED PECANS Prep Time: 5 mins
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a sheet tray with parchment. 2. Whisk together the sugars, corn syrup, salt, and spices in a bowl. Thin with a tablespoon or two of water as needed. Add pecans and toss well to coat. 3. Spread pecans evenly in prepared pan and bake 25-30 minutes, stirring once or twice to be sure they cook evenly and don’t burn. 4. Remove from oven when browned and glossy and sprinkle with remaining cinnamon sugar and toss. 5. Place a piece of parchment or non-stick foil on the counter and carefully spread out the nuts on the paper and allow to cool. Break apart. 6. Nuts can be kept at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. RECIPE NOTES • Yields 1 lb of candied pecans • Definitely use water to thin the sugar mixture before tossing the pecans. Just enough so it’s easy to coat the nuts.
16 oz whole pecans 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed 1/3 cup light corn syrup 2 tsp kosher salt 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp ginger 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract 1-2 Tbsp water as needed *Additional 1 Tbsp sugar mixed with 1 tsp cinnamon for topping INGREDIENTS Cook Time: 30 mins • Servings: 6 These candied pecans are the perfect holiday gift! They travel well, last for several days, (even weeks) and are a delicious snack or salad topper. Can’t be there in person? Wrap em and ship em for that little taste of home.
• Keep an eye on the nuts as they bake, stirring a couple times to be sure they bake evenly and don’t burn. • When you remove the nuts from the oven, work quickly and spread them on a clean sheet of parchment, separating them as best you can. Careful! The sugar coating will be hot and can burn! • Break them apart before serving or storing. Cooled nuts can be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks.

HOME DESIGN My real estate partner Kim and I were in a newly renovated house, and I was appalled by the amount of recessed lights in the living room. It wasn’t so much that they were there, but rather the fact that the color temperature of the lights was set to the brightest blue. “So the simple fact is,” I continued my rant, “most people don’t realize that lighting set to over 3000K, or light that is very blue, disrupts their sleep cycle and can keep them up at night.” “So recessed lights are bad?” Kim asked. “No, not at all. They have their uses. And fine, if you like them in your living room, great. I think it’s overkill and prefer pools of light to make things cozy, but that’s just me. However, if you’re going to have them, the bulbs should be set to 2700K, a soft warm light. It will make you feel much better and sleep better.” “Well, everyone has recessed lights in their kitchen,” Kim pointed out.
“Exactly! That’s where they belong. They’re task lights,” I replied. “But let’s see if they positioned them properly.” As we walked into the kitchen and looked up, I groaned. “What now?” Kim asked impatiently. I pointed to the ceiling. “See how this renovator put this nice symmetrical box of recessed lights all around the room?”
“Yeah, so?” she responded. “It’s ALL wrong!!” I exclaimed. To be continued…

INTERIOR DESIGN COZY CORNERS: CREATING WARM HOLIDAY NOOKS IN SMALL SPACES Don’t let tight quarters dampen your holiday spirit! This December, we’re diving into delightful ways to infuse even the coziest corners with festive flair. Transforming a small space into a holiday haven is all about smart, space-saving decorations that bring cheer without the clutter (well, maybe a little clutter, ‘cause more is more!) Start by going vertical with your decor. Drape garlands and twinkling lights around window frames or along bookshelves to elevate your space without sacrificing square footage. Opt for a slim, tall tree or a chic tabletop version adorned with miniature ornaments that sparkle with personality. Consider creating a snug holiday nook that beckons for a quiet evening with a good book. A corner armchair draped with a plush throw and a stack of holiday pillows can become your new seasonal retreat. Set up a mini hot chocolate station on a rolling cart decked out with festive mugs, peppermint sticks, and a small selection of your favorite cocoa mix-ins. Finally, double down on decor that serves a dual purpose. Scented candles in holiday fragrances like cinnamon and pine not only add to the ambiance but also act as charming centerpieces. Incorporate fresh winter greens in vases or rustic pots for a touch of nature that smells as good as it looks. Remember, the goal is to create a space that feels both open and inviting. So choose decorations that complement your existing decor, offering warmth and holiday cheer without overwhelming your petite palace. This season, let your small spaces shine with big holiday heart!

MUSICIAN OF THE MONTH
SPONSORED BY IN TUNE
This month, we shine the spotlight on 15-year-old Danielle “Dani” Rimas, a talented musician from Columbia High School. Dani is a multi instrumentalist who plays the guitar, bass guitar, and piano. Her musical journey began in kindergarten with the piano, followed by the guitar in 7th grade and bass in 8th grade.
Danielle Rimas
“Learning to play an instrument exercises persistence,” she shares. “It can take a while to learn difficult pieces, but it’s also a creative outlet, especially as a songwriter. Music is my form of self-expression.” Dani draws inspiration from her mom’s boyfriend, Nat Grauman, a skilled guitarist, and the renowned singer Phoebe Bridgers. “After watching countless videos of Phoebe Bridgers, I wanted to be more like her,” she explains, reflecting on her desire to expand beyond piano. In addition to her musical pursuits, Dani is a dedicated athlete, running and playing for the CHS Girls JV Tennis Team. She is also actively involved in school activities, serving as vice president of her class and participating in various clubs. Her favorite musician, Noah Kahan, resonates deeply with her. “He can make a metaphor for any emotion I feel,” Dani says, emphasizing the profound impact music has on her life. With aspirations to learn the banjo and drums, Dani’s musical journey is just beginning, and we can’t wait to see where it takes her next!

24TH ANNUAL DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. OBSERVANCE, VOLUNTEER FAIR, AND LUMINARY LIGHTING
The Board of Directors and Staff of the Community Coalition on Race invite the public to our 24th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance, Volunteer Fair, and Luminary Lighting on Monday, January 20, 2025, at 3 p.m., at Columbia High School. This year’s theme, “Upholding Dr. King’s Legacy in Challenging Times” holds special significance as we gather to reaffirm our shared commitment to racial equity and inclusion at a time when these values face serious challenges. This free event draws hundreds of SOMA residents and friends from neighboring communities. It features keynote speakers Dr. Saladin Ambar and Ibi Zoboi, inspiring interfaith readings, music, dance, and a renewed call to honor Dr. King’s vision of service and unity. After the celebration, please join the reception and Volunteer Fair for community-building organizations. We also encourage everyone to participate in the family-friendly SOMA Luminary Project in January. Luminary kits are available at a variety of local businesses. After the observance, The Meadowlands Conservancy hosts a community luminary lighting around the pond in South Orange. Let’s light thousands of luminaries on January 20th to symbolize Dr. King’s Beloved Community. Learn more at communitycoalitiononrace.org.

MEDICARE
MEDICARE COVERAGE OPTIONS
Medicare Parts A and B comprise what is known as Original Medicare. If you would prefer to enroll in a plan managed by a private health insurance company, you can choose Medicare Part C, or Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage plans combine Part A and Part B benefits, and often include Part D (prescription drug) benefits. Some beneficiaries prefer to have all of their coverage managed under one comprehensive plan. You must enroll in both Medicare Part A and Part B to elect an Advantage plan (and continue to pay your Part B premiums). Medicare will pay the Advantage plan administrator a monthly fee to manage your care, while the Advantage plan will deliver your benefits. The Difference Between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage The difference between the two plans pertains to accessing your benefits. With Original Medicare, you are subject to deductibles and a 20 percent co-insurance on Part B. You can access care at any doctor’s office or hospital that accepts Medicare (which most do). Under a Medicare Advantage plan, you access care through a network of providers in your coverage area. You will owe co-pays that vary for different services, depending upon how your plan is structured. Some plans will charge a per-day co-pay for hospital stays, while others charge a flat amount for the entire stay. Advantage plans provide a safety net for catastrophic expenses. The plans include an out-of-pocket spending cap. When beneficiaries reach that limit, the plan kicks in to cover medical expenses for the rest of the year (Plan D expenses are calculated and managed separately). Choosing A Medicare Advantage Plan With so many options, choosing a Medicare plan is overwhelming. Fortunately, insurance professionals (like me!) dedicate themselves to learning all of the options available and can guide you toward the best plan(s) for your needs.

FROM THE DOCTOR THE CAUSE OF CHRONIC PAIN MAY BE THAT OLD INJURY An auto accident, sports injury, or a simple slip and fall can be traumatic. Even if you don’t notice any obvious injuries from an accident, an injury may not surface until days or weeks later. Chaos often surrounds such events, causing many people to overlook the connection between their current pain and past injuries, leading them to forgo treatment or professional consultation. Generally, severe injuries require longer healing times. Injuries like muscle pulls, spasms, or whiplash may seem minor initially but can lead to lasting repercussions for months. Your recovery depends on the extent of your injuries and the nature of the accident. Back and neck injuries typically take longer to heal, while brain injuries and significant spinal issues may require months for full recovery. Untreated injuries can result in debilitating chronic pain long after the event has faded from memory. Whether you deal with a concussion, back or neck pain, muscle strains, a herniated disc, whiplash, a spinal injury, or tissue damage, untreated injuries can lead to long-term consequences. No matter where you are in the timeline following a car accident, your chiropractor can assist you on your road to recovery. FROM THE DOCTOR Cubital Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve passes through the cubital tunnel—a structure composed of muscle, ligaments, and bone—leading to inflammation. Often referred to as hitting the “funny bone,” this condition affects the nerve, causing swelling, irritation, and discomfort on the inside of the elbow. Cubital tunnel syndrome develops when a person frequently bends their elbows while pulling, reaching, or lifting, leans on their elbows, or suffers an injury to the area. Conditions like arthritis, bone spurs, and previous fractures or dislocations can also contribute. In many instances, the exact cause remains unknown. However, my observations indicate that repetitive pulling of heavy objects often leads to this injury. Common symptoms include numbness or tingling in the hand, particularly in the little and ring fingers, especially when the elbow bends. Patients may experience nighttime numbness, muscle weakness in grip strength, pain in the hand, and aching on the inside of the elbow. Occasionally, this condition mimics medial epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow), underscoring the importance of professional diagnosis. Upon seeking care, patients undergo thorough examinations and relevant history assessments. In some cases, x-rays, EMGs, and nerve conduction tests may follow. Treatment options include rest, anti-inflammatories, nighttime splinting, and physical therapy (PT). Night splinting helps alleviate pain. PT evaluations often lead to stretching and nerve gliding exercises to reduce tightness and irritation. If conservative treatments fail, physicians may discuss surgery. To prevent recurrence, patients should strengthen and stretch muscles, avoid leaning on elbows, and warm up before exercise.

What we do: We showcase exceptional handmade
Brian Dittmar
creations from a wide variety of today’s top independent makers — from right here in New Jersey, to California, Japan, and beyond. Each piece reflects their unique point of view while blending creative artistry and fine craftsmanship with the distinction of being handmade in small batches. What should people know about you and your background that led you to open this business? With 30 years of expertise in the design industry, our founder Brian Dittmar is passionate about curating the most remarkable, well crafted pieces available today. At Maker + Muse, you’ll discover these one-of-a-kind creations, perfect for gifting to someone special — or for treating yourself to something truly extraordinary. What makes you unique as compared to your competitors in the area? In a world of mass production, our makers stand out by keeping the art of handmade craftsmanship alive and well. Each piece they create isn’t just an accessory; it’s a story, shaped by skilled hands and careful attention to detail. The fact that we can tell customers exactly who made a certain piece and discuss their background or their inspiration is unique in today’s retail landscape. What makes you especially proud of your business? I’m proud because each item in my store is more than just a product; it’s a story. By featuring handmade pieces crafted with care and intention, I’m able to offer something truly unique — accessories that carry meaning and evoke emotion, becoming cherished keepsakes with a personal touch that mass-produced items simply can’t match. This approach reflects the authenticity and dedication at the heart of my business, inviting customers to be part of something lasting and meaningful.

FINANCIAL FOCUS
CONSIDER THESE YEAR-END FINANCIAL MOVES
As the holiday season approaches, your schedule may get busier. However, take time to consider some financial strategies before 2025. Here are a few suggestions: • Review your investment portfolio. Ask yourself: Has its performance met my expectations this year? Does it reflect my goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon? Do I need to rebalance? Working with a financial professional can help you address these questions. • Add to your 401(k) and HSA. If possible, increase your contributions to your 401(k) before year-end, including “catch-up” contributions if you’re 50 or older. Also, consider adding funds to your health savings account (HSA) by the tax-filing deadline in April. • Use your FSA dollars. A flexible spending account (FSA) operates on a “use-it-or-lose-it” basis. If you have unspent funds, try to use them in 2024. Check with your HR department about any possible extensions. • Contribute to a 529 plan. If you haven’t opened a 529 education savings plan for your children, consider doing so. Earnings grow tax-deferred, and withdrawals for qualified education expenses remain federally tax-free. • Build your emergency fund. Aim to keep up to six months’ worth of living expenses in a liquid, low-risk account. This fund prevents you from dipping into retirement savings for short-term needs. • Review your estate plans. Update your documents if your family situation changes. Check beneficiary designations on investment accounts, as they can supersede your will. • Take your RMDs. If you’re 73 or older, withdraw required minimum distributions (RMDs) from your retirement accounts to avoid penalties. These moves can benefit you in 2024 and beyond.

MEET KELLY CONOVER
RESCUE DOG ADVOCATE
Rescue dogs hold a special place in the hearts of many animal advocates, including Kelly Conover, who has dedicated 15 years to animal rescue. Her journey began with fostering dogs, and she and her husband adopted a Staffordshire Terrier named Stevie eight years ago. Since then, they have become passionate advocates for the pitbull breed. “Being a psychologist and a mother, I find immense satisfaction in giving these dogs a second chance,” says Conover. In collaboration with Marcia Sandford Fishkind, Conover has also taken on the mission of tracking and trapping lost dogs in the South of Market (SOMA) area. Their motivation stemmed
from experiences with Buddha Dog Rescue & Recovery, which helped them rescue two local strays. “We quickly realized the community’s need for a more proactive approach, especially since the animal control services often only respond to dogs that are contained,” she explains. In addition to rescuing dogs, Conover and her team are working on a volunteer TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) program aimed at providing medical care and managing the stray cat population. Through these efforts, Conover has met numerous dedicated animal advocates, fostering a strong sense of community and collaboration. “It’s heartwarming to see so many people come together for the welfare of animals,” she concludes. The commitment of volunteers like Conover sheds light on the critical importance of animal rescue efforts in our communities. Buddha Dog Rescue & Recovery: (http://buddhadogrescue.org)
