TMJ DISORDERS

Many people notice clicking in their jaws and dismiss it as unimportant, but this issue can lead to significant problems. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the jaw to the skull, and dysfunctions in this joint affect the surrounding muscles and ligaments. TMJ disorders can cause issues like jaw pain, headaches, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth. While many people refer to these conditions simply as TMJ, “TMD” stands for temporomandibular joint dysfunction. This disorder affects about 5-12% of the population. Individuals typically have two TMJ joints, one on each side, and dysfunction can impact one or both joints. Those between 20-40 years old are most susceptible. TMJ symptoms vary widely and may include jaw pain, facial pain, shoulder or neck pain, stiffness, jaw popping, headaches, earaches, and changes in how teeth fit together. Factors contributing to TMJ problems include jaw injuries, teeth grinding, arthritis, malocclusion, and stress. Certain habits can worsen symptoms, such as using teeth as tools, poor posture, chewing on pens, and nighttime grinding. Treatment often begins with nonsurgical options like physical therapy (PT), mouth guards, and injections. Medications may also help, while surgery remains an option if other treatments fail. Typically, a combination of a mouth guard and PT leads to improvement. PT focuses on strengthening jaw muscles, soft tissue mobilization, and developing a home exercise program to improve posture and reduce neck strain. A thorough evaluation precedes any treatment plan.
