SOMA Living August 2024

HOME DESIGN “Oh my gosh! I love those pendant lights,” said a potential home buyer. I was sitting at an Open House for a listing; a house I had just completed a whole-house renovation on and was now selling. We were in the kitchen looking at a pair of hanging pendant lights (see picture in the ad below). “Aren’t they great?” I responded. “And the beauty is, they’re repurposed.” “How so?” she countered. “When I bought this house, the milk glass globes were actually in the bathrooms as flush mount ceiling lights. Before the demo began, I took them, knowing I would use them in my design somewhere in the house. Once I realized how cool they would be as pendants, I took them to a lighting repair shop and had them retrofitted to become these fabulous lights.” “Wow, that’s awesome. I never thought about how you can kind of mix and match lighting parts,” she exclaimed. “Whenever I’m with buyers who are house shopping, I try to look for the original fixtures to be used as they are,

or how they can be repurposed into something new and fresh,” I said.

“I have a friend who does that with furniture!” she exclaimed.

“How so?” I asked.

“Well, she’ll buy old furniture, usually really cheap, and then recover it in the most beautiful, stylish, colorful fabric she can find. Her pieces are gorgeous!” “Sounds amazing! And also a great lesson in how to repurpose,” I said. “And those pieces won’t end up in a landfill,” she added.

“Exactly,” I agreed.
