SOMA Living April 2026

This month, I had the chance to learn more about the incredible emergency responders who keep SOMA safe. Every department emphasized one essential reminder: in an emergency, always call 9‑1‑1 and be ready to share your exact location so help can arrive quickly. Beyond their lifesaving work, our first responders also offer programs that welcome the community in. The South Orange Rescue Squad is made up of 80 dedicated volunteers who responded to 2,263 calls last year. Their EMTs begin each shift with a full “rig check,” inspecting the ambulance, restocking supplies, and ensuring equipment is ready for any situation. Throughout the day, they complete paperwork, train, and respond to emergencies. Teens can join as cadets at age 16, and the squad offers tours and training classes for local groups. South Orange and Maplewood share the South Essex Regional Fire Department, which operates three firehouses SOMA SNAPSHOTS

and provides ambulance service in Maplewood. They’ll host an open house in October, offering residents a chance to learn more about fire safety, including how burn patterns can help determine the cause of a fire.

Both the South Orange and Maplewood Police Departments invite families to National Night Out each August, a free event featuring food, activities, and a chance to meet local officers. Kids ages 10–13 can also apply for the Junior Police Academy, a free weeklong summer program with applications available in June.
