A few years later, the Donovans moved to Maplewood and welcomed a spirited daughter named Sophie. At four and a half years old, Sophie displays a “spitfire” personality with a precocious intellect. The relationship between Oliver and Sophie is heartwarming, as Sophie plays a significant role in helping Oliver blossom and open up verbally. The siblings share a special bond filled with love and care. The Donovan family finds a supportive community in their town, connecting with other families through local support groups and Oliver’s school. They benefit from Blue Path, an organization providing service dogs for children with autism. Their service dog, Moose, joined the family in September and ensures Oliver’s safety, providing comfort and companionship. Elizabeth works from home for a B2B intelligence platform for the insurance industry, while Heather stays at home, dedicating her time to managing the household and supporting Oliver’s education. Their partnership is a testament to their deep devotion to each other and their children. “We joke that she’s literally my life assistant for everything,” Elizabeth says of Heather. Living in Maplewood brings immense joy to the Donovan family. They appreciate the town’s understanding, acceptance, and equality. “It probably sounds ridiculous, but living here we forget all the time that we’re gay,” Heather mentions, highlighting the community’s inclusive nature. They enjoy local amenities, such as a favorite coffee shop Sophie calls “Ghost Light Bakery” because of its Halloween decor, the Reservoir, as well as Turtle Back Zoo. The proximity to New York City allows for cultural enrichment through museums and shows. Heather adds, “It’s really wonderful how many theater productions and other events have special performances designed for children with autism.” The Donovans’ journey faces ups and downs, but resilience and love carry them through. Embracing their family dynamic, they focus on creating a nurturing environment for their children. They express gratitude for the many opportunities and privileges living in Maplewood grants them.
