Peninsula In Passage

Sarah Smith Sarah Smith grew up exploring the waterways of North Suffolk and nurturing a deep love of the area. Now she’s a teacher and certified athletic trainer at Nansemond River High School, her alma mater. She remembers - Coming home from college I’d open the car windows and when my dog and I both smelled the salt water we knew we were home. I remember growing up seeing the telephone poles painted purple and the Purple Lady pushing her shopping cart along Route 17. I remember when Harbour View was first developing and my dad was working on the site there, when going to Rodman’s for peanuts and barbecue was a treat and when George and Steve’s was the only place to go for cheeseburgers and French fries. And I remember my dad’s mother talking about going to the Obici house when she was little and being allowed to play with the dolls Mrs. Obici kept in a cabinet at the top of the stairs. I never had any ambition to leave Suffolk. I grew up on the water, playing in the water and spent time at Davis’s clubhouse. But I like the progress too – now we have a Dick’s Sporting Goods and all kinds of other places.
