CHAIR’S WELCOME

For 40 years, the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) has been at the heart of the hardwood flooring industry. As we reach this milestone, let’s celebrate the craftsmanship, innovation, and community that make this industry so special. NWFA has led the way, shaped the industry, and built a network of professionals dedicated to excellence. In this business, success isn’t just about starting strong, it’s about endurance. It’s about craftsmanship that stands the test of time, businesses that adapt and thrive, and professionals like you who commit to lifelong learning and improvement. Through changing trends, evolving technology, and shifting markets, one thing has remained constant – NWFA’s commitment to education, quality, and community. This special edition of Hardwood Floors magazine includes NWFA members’ stories about what this organization has meant to them, how it has shaped their careers, and why its impact continues to grow. Hear from them starting on page 18. The strength of NWFA comes from its members, those who not only excel in their craft, but also go above and beyond to share their insights, mentor others, and promote the values of this industry. Your dedication, skill, and passion help us all thrive. The reason NWFA has remained relevant for 40 years is simple – we never stop evolving. We’re always looking ahead, identifying the trends that shape our industry, and giving our members the tools they need to succeed. As we set our sights on the future, let’s continue to push forward by making connections, gaining knowledge, and strengthening our industry for the next 40 years. Steve Brattin Chair, NWFA

WATCH: NWFA’S 40TH ANNIVERSARY

“The guys who put NWFA together were all family-owned businesses, so they cared about the industry. They had been around a long time. We never dreamed NWFA would be what it is today. It’s made a real difference in our industry.”

40 NWFA MEMBERS REFLECT ON THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY From those who were there as NWFA was founded to today’s emerging leaders, 40 members shared thoughts on the impact the organization has had on their careers and the wood flooring industry. Read their reflections on the pages that follow.

“I was involved very early with the NWFA because my father (Jack Coates) was one of the men who founded the association. They said, ‘Let’s get an association together that represents everybody – manufacturers, distributors, dealers, retailers, and flooring contractors.’ At the time, the emphasis was on what they could do to help grow the industry. The thought very quickly was that any education we can provide to all of us, sharing our knowledge, providing training programs, and certification programs later on, all were based on the idea that everybody would be on an equal playing field. The manufacturers were no more important to the association than a distributor or a flooring contractor; they were all equally important, and by working together, we would all grow, and that is exactly what has happened.”

“It’s important because if you are going into this industry, you need the right guidance. Through the NWFA, I was able to meet manufacturers who showed me how to use their products correctly. Do you know how many people in this industry are doing it wrong? The NWFA teaches you how to do it correctly, so I highly recommend that you tap into the NWFA. It will change your life and guide you on the right path.” CARLOS MONGALO, NATIONAL FLOORING CONTRACTORS APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM “It is the only organization of its type that is committed to growing the most sustainable flooring type that there is. Whether it’s product standards, whether it’s training, and so on, you look around the industry, and you see all kinds of fake products that try to imitate the real thing. This is the only organization that really, truly focuses on the best flooring type that you could have – wood flooring.” DAN NATKIN, ESSEX COATINGS

“The first thing we had to do with the National Wood Flooring Association was get installers trained. Keep in mind that was the big program, because at the time we had one school a year and then that got expanded to two schools a year, so you could probably train a total of 100 installers. The biggest problem we saw, as did our distributors, was that when our wood flooring installers had a chance to install a wood floor, they were so poorly trained that there were too many failures. So, that was Virgil, and the group’s whole idea was to get these guys trained properly. We couldn’t get them trained properly unless they had guidelines to go by, and that’s where I got selected to write those guidelines.” NEIL MOSS, NWFA HALL OF FAME AWARD RECIPIENT As told to Brett Miller during an interview for the NWFA Wood Talk podcast. Listen to the full episode by visiting hardwoodfloorsmag.com/nwfa-wood-talk-podcast

“The relationships we’ve built through the NWFA – with contractors, distributors, and even fellow mills – have been instrumental in shaping Allegheny Mountain Hardwood Flooring into the company it is today. Seeing how widely respected and loved our flooring is across the country made a lasting impression on me. It played a big role in my decision to stay involved in the family business and focus on sales and marketing. The NWFA community helped turn our work into something much bigger than just what happens at the mill, including meaningful partnerships like donating flooring for homes built by the Gary Sinise Foundation. It has been an incredible experience to be part of something that gives back in such a tangible way.”

“When I decided I wanted to be a wood flooring craftsman in 1998 in Ontario, Canada, I quickly found NOFMA and the NWFA. Over the years, I’ve attended nearly 10 different training courses and have become a certified professional. The NWFA has given me direction and support and helped shape my career. I feel like my skills are a combination of all the masters and trainers I’ve studied under.” JASON VIVASH, J.L. VIVASH CUSTOM WOOD FLOORS LTD.

“The NWFA, for me, it represents more than just education. It represents knowledge that everyone brings to the table and then we share it. Everyone’s there for one purpose and one purpose only – give the knowledge that they know. And that’s what makes the NWFA absolutely special. Education, family, and I’ll use the word tradition.”

“I’ve been in the industry about as long as the NWFA. We’ve been able to grow with the NWFA, learn, and make new friends. It’s a really good network. We’re really looking forward to the next stage as my family comes through into the business.”

“Congratulations to NWFA on its 40th anniversary! Being featured in Hardwood Floors magazine’s 2021 ‘Women in the Industry’ spotlight was a proud moment in my career. The association creates opportunities for everyone and fosters a strong, supportive community. It’s an honor to be part of NWFA, and my goal is to give back by mentoring the next generation. I had the chance to witness the next generation embracing it, through my son’s eyes, this year at the Expo in Charlotte. A full circle moment that reminded me why this industry and this community matter so much.” “The NWFA has given me an opportunity to learn from the best and most experienced craftspeople in our industry today. That shared knowledge is responsible for my professional growth over the last 25 years, and for that, I am eternally grateful. The NWFA has provided this same opportunity to grow to scores of wood floor professionals over the last 40 years and has helped foster relationships that have stood the test of time.” ROSE FALL, FALL DESIGN

JASON HEALD, AGED WIDE FLOORS

“The first NWFA Expo I went to was in St. Louis. We had just started making flooring at that time. I came away from that meeting with a lot of knowledge and some customers who became long-term customers. The NWFA has been a big part of the success of our company ever since then. We have made a lot of contacts that have become customers and a lot of friends in the industry from our association with the NWFA.”

STEVE MERRICK, MERRICK HARDWOODS

“The guys that put NWFA together were all family-owned businesses, so they cared about the industry. They had been around a long time. We never dreamed the NWFA would be what it is today. It has made a real difference in our industry … I’m very proud that I was part of it at the very beginning, and to what NWFA has grown into. I’m encouraged and look forward to seeing what the next 40 years are like.”

WAYNE COTTON, FORMER NWFA CHAIRMAN

GENE JARKA, PALLMANN

“I have attended 37 conventions. My first convention was held in Kansas City, with 290 attendees. All tabletop displays. I was able to position myself with the founding fathers and a core group that shaped the NWFA into what it is today. Each year, as it grew, I always felt it was more like a yearly reunion.”

“Our greatest resource out in the field is NWFA with their great training and knowledge about new products and technicalities. There is a need right now for trained labor and certification, and NWFA is top-notch at that. In this world of technology and communication, NWFA always keeps up to date with the latest ways to transmit the policies of the country relevant to wood, to lobby for the whole wood category, to train the installers, and I think they’ll be at the core of the movement from synthetics back to wood.”

JANET SULLIVAN, RETIRED FROM LENMAR/GEMINI COATINGS

“I am very proud and honored to have been involved with the National Wood Flooring Association for its entire 40-year history. The association has significantly improved our industry in numerous ways, bringing everyone together to collaborate on issues, share ideas, and strengthen our businesses. Happy 40th anniversary, NWFA!”

CHARLIE LAMMERS, MP GLOBAL

TOMMY MAXWELL, MAXWELL HARDWOOD FLOORING INC.

“I enjoy NWFA, I’ve been a part of it since 2016. I’ve gone from being a contractor to a sales representative for Loba-Wakol, and it helps on both sides. The NWFA has been vital as a reference source for knowledge, for expanding my technical skills, and meeting connections that I consider friends.”

“The NWFA has been instrumental in expanding my customer base and connecting me with incredible industry peers through the 40 Under 40 program. Now, as one of 16 members on the NWFA Emerging Leaders Council, I’m honored to help shape the future of our industry. NWFA has truly elevated my career and network in ways I never imagined.”

“Since 2016, Bostik has been hosting Bostik/NWFA hardwood flooring intermediate installation seminars in Mexico. Over the years, we have educated more than 1,500 attendees. The biggest event ever hosted was a single seminar that had more than 200 attendees. It was the first time a formal educational seminar on hardwood flooring was held in Mexico. The response was so big that we made the strategic decision to bring in two well-known hardwood flooring experts in North America to be the top presenters, Jon Namba and Lenny Hall. That seminar set the standard for this industry in Mexico, and over the years, it has only gotten better and better. The Bostik Mexico team wants to congratulate the NWFA for their 40th anniversary and express our sincere appreciation for helping grow and support the professionalization of the hardwood flooring industry in Mexico.”

“I am looking forward to the next 40 years of making friends, making great connections in the industry, and learning from the industry’s best. It’s important to look at the benefits we get through NWFA. An opportunity to link up with like-minded people in the industry, great vendors, and to make new friends. One of the tools we use for our team is the NWFA University. You can learn about species, installation, and even about sales. That’s a great tool and benefit we’ve gotten from this organization. It guarantees you are going to have a staff with formal training to navigate different scenarios.”

OLIVER BARAJAS, BRIDGEBAY FLOORING INC.

“I got involved in NWFA because when I started in the industry, there was a lack of standards and knowledge. It was kind of a hand-me down type of deal where there were no guidelines or anything to fall back on for the customer or contractor. The biggest thing about NWFA is education. I can’t say it enough. It’s probably the most important thing the association does.”

JAIME JIMENEZ, BOSTIK INC.

“Throughout the years, it just keeps teaching me more about how to evolve my company, and I see people do things that I can emulate. Every time I come to an event with NWFA, I learn something new.”

“Happy 40th anniversary, NWFA! I’m proud to say I have been part of it for 30 years. I had the unique experience of coming in as a total newcomer to the industry and the association with no experience in hardwood flooring at all. I was welcomed in, and everybody shared their perspective and their knowledge with me. Here I am, three decades later, with so many friends and connections from all around the country. I can pay it forward and give back. It’s been a pleasure serving on the board and as chair.”

“My first experience with the NWFA was taking the five-day basic wood floor installation and finishing class in the old Chesterfield, Missouri, training facility. There, I had the chance to work with some industry legends, learning how to install wood in a safe environment where we could all learn from our mistakes and not get sued by a homeowner. To this day, I always talk about that class and tell my peers that it was probably the best hands-on training experience I have ever had. If you want to learn how to install wood flooring, the NWFA is the only place to do that, in my opinion. Further, the NWFA organization itself is top tier, and I applaud the organization’s growth and continued professionalism to become the premier association in this domain.”

JULIE RUSSELL, GEMINI INDUSTRIES

JEFF JOHNSON, MAPEI

“Attending NWFA training classes helped me improve my sanding, finishing, and development in my work.”

“The NWFA has been significant to my career ever since my first NWFA Expo back in 1995. At the time, we were peddling an unheard-of technology – Bostik’s Best Moisture Cure Urethane Adhesive. The NWFA’s Wood Floor of the Year competition not only recognized the best installations; these pioneering contractors gave legitimacy to the technology and the brand.”

PEDRO CORREA, WARWICK WOOD FLOORING INC.

“The fact that NWFA is willing to listen to not just the older generation that is around but also the newer generation is a great thing to see.”

“It has been a blessing to be part of this brotherhood, this community of like minded individuals and contractors. For me, being able to travel all over the country, I go coast to coast working on courts. I can always call someone to help me out with a tool or to provide me with a location for a supply store. A lot of people aren’t educated on what hardwood flooring truly is, and NWFA gives you that education. It gives you all of the knowledge from species of wood to sales to marketing, and how to grow your business.”

LUIS PEREZ, HERO FLOORING LLC

“From my perspective, now being in the industry for 33 years, I still remember one of my early reflections was – and still is – how collaborative/team spirited the NWFA is. Yes, we all have competitors in this industry, but I think, for the most part, we all realize that working together as a team in a very large ‘ocean’ of other flooring surfaces can be beneficial for us all. And the NWFA has very much inspired that approach, that if we can spread the message/ value proposition of why real wood is good for the long-term, we all win.”

“Congratulations to NWFA on 40 years! Sheoga has been part of NWFA for a long time. The Expos have helped us make connections in the industry. The training and the schools have benefited us over the years. Whenever there’s a question that arises, there’s always someone who can help us. We’ve partnered closely with the NWFA on the NOFMA guidelines, with John Forbes and Brett Miller always there to answer questions whenever there is a problem that we are maybe not sure how to handle.”

JOHN KIEPPER, SHEOGA HARDWOOD FLOORING

“I believe that a strong association is a powerful force for good. When we share knowledge and expertise, the industry becomes better. When we speak in one voice, we are more likely to be heard.”

“It changed my life. Even being a third-generation finisher, I learned how to understand all the technical chemicals and logistics required to work with a wood floor product. Today, just due to NWFA, I learn, I teach, and I help. I have great projects and great jobs, and I keep my family very happy. If you go around the world, there is no association like NWFA. There are a lot of craftsmen associations, but as a whole, the NWFA puts everybody together.”

“The NWFA has strengthened the wood flooring industry by serving as a vital connector that helps manufacturers nationwide reach new buyers through trade shows, networking events, and industry directories. Additionally, their comprehensive installation guidelines have standardized practices across the industry, ensuring consistent quality and establishing professional credibility for certified installers. These efforts have improved both market access for manufacturers and installation reliability for consumers.”

TOMMY AND MANDY SANCIC, OLDE WOOD LTD.

“The NWFA has made a big difference in my career by allowing the space to network with individuals in the wood floor industry for career, business, and personal mentoring opportunities. The organization brings value to the industry by setting standards and guidelines that should be followed, protecting all parties throughout the supply chain to the end user, ensuring successful outcomes of projects.”

“In the past, it has been friendships and relationships that I’ll have for life. Going forward, the NWFA is a great organization. You get out of it what you put in. It’s one of those things that you have to engage in, and it’s welcoming. Everybody wants you to be part of the NWFA.”

“NWFA serves as a vital resource for wood flooring professionals, promoting growth, education, and advocacy within the industry. It fosters innovation by encouraging the adoption of new technologies and standards. It has provided a community where people can collaborate and support one another. Congratulations on 40 years of honoring the tradition and art of wood flooring craftsmanship.”

“I really can’t think of anything in my flooring career that has expedited my learning curve, connection to the industry, and confidence as a flooring professional more than my long-standing relationship with the NWFA. HEATHER BARBOUR, HULTMAN FLOORING INC.

“The NWFA has been the link the industry needed to unite all of the businesses in the wood flooring industry. The two key things that have happened through the NWFA are allowing communication between manufacturers, distributors, and contractors, and the education within our industry to grow the knowledge base and the people to a higher level of expertise. I believe that without the NWFA, and the work they have done for 40 years, our businesses would not be able to provide the professional services we now have.”

“Mullican Flooring is proud to be a longstanding member of the NWFA. I think the networking between members of all channels is invaluable, as it helps give us a perspective on what is happening in the industry. The members of the NWFA compete with each other, but there is an underlying commitment to better the industry and raise the bar to make all of us better people and better businesspeople.”

“The industry has come a long way, and so has the NWFA. The NWFA is not standing still. They’re not focused on owning the past; they respect the past, but they’re also clear and focused on the future.”

STEVEN SKUTELSKY, PID FLOORS

“Many years ago, I was encouraged to invest my time and talents into the NWFA as those before me who started it 40 years ago had done. I’m challenging you, as contractors, distributors, and manufacturers, to do the same. Invest in this industry with your time and your talent so we can be here for another 40 years to raise the next generation of craftspeople, smart businesspeople, certified professionals, and to elevate the game where a high tide raises all boats in this industry.”

KEVIN MURPHY, MULLICAN FLOORING

“NWFA has been THE most valuable ‘tool in the toolbox’ for industry contacts, viability, and an opportunity to pass on knowledge. Not to mention, 32 years of lifelong friends. Happy Anniversary, NWFA!”
