Community Education Learn the English Language

Learning Options • ESL/ELL students learn in a variety of ways: group, individualized, computer-assisted language learning, weekend classes and online. • Courses in oral language development, vocabulary improvement, reading and writing skills, pre-employment English and computer skills are offered. • Students can receive help preparing for citizenship. • Outreach programs for business and industry also are available. • Classes are available at all four MATC campuses. English as a Second Language/English Language Learners (ESL/ELL) Program MATC helps ensure that English learners have access to a high-quality education and the opportunity to achieve their full academic potential. Program Goals • Prepare students for college courses and programs • Help students learn English so they may function more effectively at work, at home and in the community Our Diverse Community The program serves students living in the MATC District, including resident immigrants, refugees and U.S. citizens. Students come from a wide range of educational and ethnic backgrounds that includes more than 50 countries and 30 languages. ESL/ELL Program Features • Six levels of instruction ranging from beginning literacy to high advanced • Day classes, evening classes and a Saturday morning workshop • Short-term or long-term programs • Instruction in developing communication skills such as reading, writing and speaking • Crossover instruction for technical programs • Vocational ESL • Computer-assisted instruction • ESL classes at community-based organizations • Online instruction • Field trips to acquaint students with the Milwaukee area • Student organizations • Academic advising
