Hipots or High Potential testers are devices used to verify insulation quality and condition of various electrical devices and equipment. Cables, transformers, and electric motors are some of the typical applications for hipot test ing. A Hipot test applies a higher-than-rated voltage to insure safe and reliable operation at rated voltage. In a typical Hipot test, high voltage is applied between a product’s current carrying conductors and its metallic chassis or grounding point. The resulting current that flows through the insulation (leakage current) is monitored by the hipot tester. If deliberate over application of test voltage does not cause insu lation to break down, the product will be safe to use under normal operating conditions—hence the name, Dielectric Withstand test. All Hipots calibrated at JM Test Systems are certified to be traceable, verifying the tools our customers trust and giving them confi dence their job was done right. Hipot tes ter calibration to ISO 17025 standards are available on many models.
