Gilbert, Arizona

One of the things the new town council wanted to accomplish was the development of a con sistent public water supply.Their ambitious plan was to build a water tower that would supply a gravity flow system to the citizens of Gilbert. In 1925, the Gilbert Town Council contracted to build the water tower. In the early years of the water tower, it was painted black, but from the 1930s until early 2007 the tower was painted silver. It is now white. The dreams of the town were fulfilled upon the completion of the water tower and the pipe system created in 1925. The water tower is shown below as it is in the middle of town and only one block west of Main Street (Gilbert Road).

A pump-house was built below the tower and was used many times as the first jailhouse in Gilbert. On Sunday mornings, it was fun to walk by the jail and hear the drunks from Saturday night moaning in our little adobe jailhouse.
