Gilbert, Arizona

In 1914, a subdivision known as the Gilbert Townsite was recorded in Maricopa County. We now think of this area as “Old Town.” This filing was two years after Arizona was granted statehood and six years before Gilbert became an incorporated community. Gilbert became an official town in 1920 when the incorporation was filed under the laws of the State of Arizona. At right is the original Gilbert Townsite plat, which was filed on April 13, 1914. This document reads in part: “that E. S. Welch, A. W. Ayers and Cora E. Burk, administra trix for the estate of Amos Burk, deceased, have this 21st day of April 1914 subdivided under the name of Gilbert townsite. The subdivision was approved by the County of Maricopa, State of Arizona.”
