Paddle, Fish, Float: Chattanooga From the River

National Geographic Adventure has named Chattanooga one of the “Best Adventure Towns in the US to Live & Play.” Here, fift miles of Tennessee River Blueway offers beautiful views of the Walnut Street Walking Bridge, Tennessee Aquarium, Hunter Museum of Ameri can Art, Lookout Mountain, Suck Creek Mountain, and more. Here’s how to get in on the fun.

It was a motorcycle ride over Signal Mountain into the Sequatchie Valley that led Charlie Eich to this beautiful property on the Tennessee River in 2018. A popular place for food and fun, River Drifters rentals include sit on kayaks, double kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and sit in kayaks. Choose from hourly or half-day rentals. Menu at the restaurant includes giant mozzarella logs, meatball subs, po-boys, a bison burger, gator bites, coconut shrimp, parmesan artichoke hearts, and a reuben with Whiskey River Sauce. River Drifters has direct water ac cess, so there’s no need to take your equipment elsewhere in town. Parking is free. L2OUTSIDE 131 River Street, 37405 www.l2outside.com To see the Scenic City by water from Coolidge Park, L2 Outside has crewmembers with equipment available both inside the storefront and under the Market Street Bridge 7 days a week from May 25 through August 31. You can rent a stand-up paddleboard, a single kayak, or a tandem kayak for one hour, two hours, or 24 hours. L2 also offers paddleboard lessons, paddleboard yoga on Saturday mornings, and Sunset Tours (1.5-2 hrs). Located in Northshore just fiv minutes from multiple access points on the Tennessee River, Rock Creek Adventures donates $1 from every booking to local nonprofit that support land and water conservation efforts and offer outdoor recreation to underserved communities. Rental hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sundays. Stand-up paddleboards are inflatabl and beginner-friendly, with options for a board that’s more stable (think SUP yoga, fishing floating or a touring board that’s more narrow for high performance. One of the best ways to tour Chattanooga from the river, the Southern Belle Riverboat carries well over 100,000 passengers per year. Offering daily tours year-round, your options include The Sights Cruise, The Sunset Cruise, The Twilight Cruise, and The Chandelier Dinner and Sunset Dinner Cruise. All cruises are for ages 3+. And everyone gets a moonpie.
