Escapees Hangouts: A Sneak Peek at the 2023 Hangouts By DAVID AND CHERYL GOLDSTEIN #126793, Hangouts Directors

MUSICAL ROOTS HANGOUT, APRIL 16–23, 2023 IN TUSCUMBIA, ALABAMA: In the 1960s, the area in and around Muscle Shoals, Alabama, became known as “The Hit Recording Capital of the World.” Famous bands and singers including Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, the Osmonds, Mac Davis and Duane Allman came to Muscle Shoals to record hit songs at the Fame Recording Studio. During this Hangout, you’ll tour Fame Studios, the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. Other activities will include visits to the Frank Lloyd Wright Rosenbaum House Museum, Helen Keller’s home and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, in Huntsville, hiking in Dismals Canyon and lots of live music and great food and drink. We’re especially excited to offer not just one or two, but three Hangouts in the incredible State of Alaska next summer! Less than 200 miles from the Arctic Circle, where the sun barely dips below the horizon in June, summer fun lasts late into the night. Experience the Summer Solstice, then join the annual Midnight Sun Fun Run, the northernmost 10K in the country, starting at 10:00 pm! You’ll also visit the incredible Museum of the North, hike the Creamer’s Field Trail, experience Alaskan heritage and culture aboard the Riverboat Discovery on the Chena River, have the option to visit the Chena Hot Springs and much more. Located at the southern end of the Alaska Railroad and the Seward Highway, this scenic town is fl anked by rugged mountains on one side and sparkling Resurrec tion Bay on the other. Wildlife abounds around Seward, including sea lions, bald eagles, sea otters, orcas and even the occasional whale. During this Hangout, you’ll visit Exit Glacier, take a glacier and wildlife cruise in Kenai Fjords National Park, tour the Alaska SeaLife Center and enjoy incredible hiking trails and kayaking. MIDNIGHT SUN HANGOUT, JUNE 20–27, 2023 IN FAIRBANKS, ALASKA: GLACIERS & FJORDS HANGOUT, JULY 10–17, 2023 IN SEWARD, ALASKA:

Even though we’re only halfway through 2022, with four Hangouts still coming up in the back half of the year—the Downeast Maine and Finger Lakes Hangouts in Sep tember, and the Carlsbad Caverns Resto ration and Texas Bourbon and Wine Hang outs in October—we’re already well into planning for 2023! Here is a sneak peek at just a few of the Hangouts already sched uled for next year (the activities listed are subject to change). We return to the Rodeo grounds at SARA Park for four nights of incredible fi reworks displays as part of the Western Pyrotechnic Association’s annual Winter Blast. Fireworks manufacturers, show producers and other enthusiasts display their latest and most creative pyrotechnics. During the daytime, you’ll explore beau tiful Lake Havasu, home of the original London Bridge, hike a scenic slot canyon and enjoy live music and other in-camp activities. After two great Hangouts in San Felipe, Baja California, next year we’re changing things up by traveling to the eastern side of the Sea of Cortez. This Hangout will begin immediately after the 62nd Escapade in Tucson, with an overnight stop in Ajo, Arizona, a brief caravan across the border, and then 10 nights of ocean-view camping in Puerto Peñasco. Our activities will include a welcome buffet dinner, sunset cruise, tequila tastings, a paint & sip session at a local tapas bar, a day of fun at Manny’s Beach Club, optional deep-sea fi shing and ATV tours, an optional eco-tour to the volcanic craters of the El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve and, of course, plenty of time for soaking up the sun on the beach! WINTER BLAST HANGOUT, FEBRUARY 14–20, 2023 IN LAKE HAVASU CITY, ARIZONA: PUERTO PEÑASCO HANGOUT, MARCH 24–APRIL 4, 2023 IN PUERTO PEÑASCO, SONORA, MEXICO
