Object of desire

To celebrate and encapsulate the life of someone as kaleidoscopically colorful and universally revered as Luciano Pavarotti was always going to be a labor of love. And the team at Decca Luxe has certainly poured its heart and soul into collector’s items will be created, one for each year of the legendary singer’s life. Each one is painstakingly handcrafted in the UK over 14 weeks by the artisans of Linley. To call the piece a music cabinet would be a disservice to the artistry and depth of thought that has gone into its creation. The Masterpiece is unique in its hybrid nature, which combines furniture design, music collection, cutting-edge technology and a working painter’s set. The highlight of the Life in Art Masterpiece is a music art cabinet in figured fumed eucalyptus, featuring external musical-notation detailing and internal marquetry inspired by one of Pavarotti’s paintings. An interactive multimedia interface provides access to the Maestro’s entire catalog with Decca Records, spanning 130 hours of audio Harmonious composition the Luciano Pavarotti Life in Art Masterpiece. Only 71 of these annotated scores. Dive deeper into this treasure trove and you’ll find 14 rare prints of his paintings discreetly housed in the lid. Nestled in a hidden compartment is a complete set of Winsor & Newton painter’s oils and brushes with a color palette reflecting Pavarotti’s paintings. A coffee-table book comprising a biography of Pavarotti and a behind-the-scenes look into the making of the cabinet completes the experience. These will be sold by invitation only and are the first in a series of collectibles honoring the life’s work of some of the greatest musicians in the world. We can’t wait to discover who is being celebrated next. From $95,000. Watches

Every H Moser watch is built and finished by hand, with all movements manufactured in-house

No name needed

For those in the know, it takes just a glance at an incredible sunburst fumé dial to recognize it as the work of H Moser & Cie. The independent Swiss brand — known not only for impeccable craftsmanship but also for being a bit of an enfant terrible for its antics, such as poking fun at the industry by making spoof watches — has mastered the art form. Fumé dials in its Concept pieces lack both logos and indexes, as adding them would detract from the dial’s beauty. This year, H Moser deemed something worthy of interrupting its dial: the Endeavour Tourbillon Concept showcases a 60-second flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock, housed in a steel case. Pairing steel with a tourbillon is classic H Moser: irreverent and provocative. This new in-house movement features a module tourbillon, which allows for easier servicing, as it is regulated independently from the rest of the movement and can be removed. It has a three-day power reserve and uses a double flat hairspring for improved accuracy. The firm also introduced a new color to the fumé dials in its Venturer collection. Blue Lagoon, a dreamy aqua, recalls the ocean in the tropics. Also in its Concept series, it has a clean dial with only the hour and minute hands. The white gold makes an especially striking contrast. Endeavour Tourbillon Concept, limited to 20 pieces, $63,000, Venturer Concept Blue Lagoon, limited to 20 pieces each in white and red gold, $24,400. BRAND PROFILE URWERK

It can take a fewminutes to wrap your head around an Urwerk movement, and for the firm’s cofounders, Felix Baumgartner andMartin Frei, that is the point. They deepen the relationship between wearer and watch, and create innovative movements and complications that require you to think, and, in some pieces, choose how you interact with the piece. The Swiss brand’s artisans test the boundaries of horology at workshops in Geneva and Zurich. Available at Cellini Jewelers in New York, +1 212 888 0505, urwerk.com

From top: Pink gold Tourbillon Chronograph; White gold Tourbillon Chronograph; Royal Oak Offshore Grande Complication

2. UR-210 Black Platinum The UR-210 uses Urwerk’s famous satellite hours, with an added retrograde-minutes complication. Three rotating cubes indicate the hour, with the current hour visible through the skeletonized minute arrow. This moves along the minute scale before it jumps back to zero, quicker than the human eye can see. There’s also a very unique indicator that shows the movement’s winding efficiency in the last two hours, allowing you to adjust the winding rate on the back of the watch, so it is more or less responsive to your motion. $163,000, limited to 25 pieces 3. UR-106 Black Pink Lotus Unlike brands that swap mechanical movements for quartz in women’s watches, Urwerk shows its respect for female collectors with its first dedicated ladies’ watch. Building on its wandering hours, Urwerk created a new carousel display system (based on the shape of a lotus flower) and added a moonphase, which emerges from the bottom of the movement as it sweeps around the dial. The black, PVD-coated steel case is discreetly set with black diamonds for an elegant touch. $184,000, limited to 11 pieces 1. UR-105 CT Streamliner Last year, Urwerk celebrated its 20th anniversary, and the designers returned to an original source of inspiration: Manhattan. The Art Deco style of two of New York’s most iconic skyscrapers, the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, heavily influenced the case design, notably the long, octagonal shape and deep channels. On the wrist, just the hour and a minutes scale are visible. When you open the top of the case, you’ll see the fascinating movement, which uses four satellite discs to tell the hours. As the hour passes, the discs rotate past the minute scale. $68,000, limited to 50 pieces

OFFSHORE’S BIGMOMENT

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Offshore model, and the watchmaker is celebrating in a big way. In addition to reissuing the original from 1993 (with a modern, in-house movement), there are two major new watches in the iconic case. First, there’s a grande complication with a minute repeater, perpetual calendar and split-seconds chronograph in a sleek ceramic case. The four subdials stand out on the skeletonized self-winding movement, allowing you to watch the minute repeater in action. In the new Offshore tourbillon chronograph, Audemars Piguet opened up the movement to give it a futuristic 3D feel. Sandblasted titanium bridges with chamfered satin-brushed edges appear to drop directly from the bezel, allowing you to dive into the movement and admire the finishings. The tourbillon peeks out from one of these bridges at 9 o’clock, and the 30-minute chronograph counter is at 3 o’clock. Royal Oak Offshore Grande Complication, $760,000, Tourbillon Chronograph, $326,000, available at Audemars Piguet in New York, +1 888 214 6858, audemarspiguet.com

SEEING STRIPES

Designers had fun with stripes this season, as seen on everything from sportswear to tailoring and even accessories. Cerruti 1881’s Jason Basmajian went into the archives and reinterpreted classic looks from Nino Cerruti himself, most notably this Breton-striped crew-neck sweater and linen parka. A nonchalant ease characterizes Guillaume Meilland’s collection for Salvatore Ferragamo. Meilland credits René Clément’s 1960 movie Plein Soleil , which was filmed in Taormina, a picturesque hillside town on the island of Sicily, and based on the Patricia Highsmith novel The Talented Mr Ripley . The casual elegance of this striped blazer and crew-neck knit would fit right in on the shores of the Italian Mediterranean. Donatella Versace also dipped into the archives to pay respects to her late brother, Gianni, with a pinstriped suit reminiscent of the menswear that helped make the Versace name an Italian fashion powerhouse. Stripes were also seen on a variety of accessories. This leather-trimmed canvas tote with vintage Gucci logo by Alessandro Michele and these playful striped sunglasses from Dior Homme are two of our favorite examples.

Aloha prints Hawaiian shirts and large tropical prints were ubiquitous on the spring runways. But how do you wear them without looking like you’re headed to the surf shack? We’ll highlight two ways to wear these eye-catching prints to make sure you’re not mistaken for Magnum PI –era Tom Selleck. Kim Jones at Louis Vuitton paired his Hawaiian shirt with a classic trench and navy pants to ground the look. Sometimes you’ll want to go bold with a floral print and wear it with color, as Paul Smith did with these magenta trousers. The shirt is far from a traditional floral print; it features sea life, including coral and fish. The bright accessories and green shoes are ready to go in any tropical locale.

PRETTY PLAID

Plaid takes a feminine twist this season, appearing in ladylike silhouettes and colors. At Oscar de la Renta, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia showed an oversized- plaid navy-and-white top whose dramatic grid contrasted beautifully with its nipped waist and trailing asymmetrical hem. Christian Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri, meanwhile, impressed us with a take-no-prisoners plaid power suit amped up with an off-the-shoulder collar. Known for his strong yet feminine clothing and political stances supporting women’s empowerment, Prabal Gurung offered one of the season’s best plaids: a pink ruched dress worn atop matching wide-leg pants, perfectly encapsulating the trend. Also using soft pink, Nina Ricci’s Guillaume Henry paired a pink-and-gray blazer with a full gray skirt and a delicate lace top.

TAKE THREE/// KITTEN HEELS

1. PAUL ANDREW Paul Andrew keeps both fashion and comfort in mind, offering a plethora of downright lovely low-heeled and flat shoes. The 2.6in-high Carpanthian slingback’s defining flourish is the metallic silver accent on its strap. $795, available online at farfetch.com

2. JIMMY CHOO At 3.3in high, the sophisticated Erin slingback just barely qualifies as a kitten heel. The adjustable strap lets you wear them bare-legged in summer

and with tights come fall. $595, available online at jimmychoo.com

In the trenches Forget the traditional beige trench coat. This season, designers transform the utilitarian garment into a surprising statement piece. ErdemMoralioglu brought his trademark femininity and embroidery to a plaid trench. A nature scene blossoming with flowers and animals winds its way around the base of the coat, and there’s embroidery on the arm as well. A corset-like belt unexpectedly finishes off the look. Also unexpected is Giambattista Valli’s choice of soft pink on his long trench. Thick metallic stitching and silver buttons toughen up the delicate hue, which will surely stand out from the crowd on a rainy day. We think it’s so elegant it could double as an evening coat. Jewelry

CARVED CREATIONS One of jewelry’s most enduring traditions, carving motifs into

precious gems, can bring a lightness to significant stones, as well as be simply breathtaking. Secret watches frequently incorporate carved stones that slide away to reveal the time. Graff is particularly adept at this, creating beautiful pieces that marry its horology prowess and jewelry artistry. This example features a 20.65-carat carved tourmaline in a floral motif. Carved stones feature heavily in Cartier’s high-jewelry collections (its Tutti Frutti pieces are an institution). The jeweler’s newer pieces pay respect to Cartier’s traditional craftsmanship while remaining modern. Here, onyx, diamonds and a host of pink and red stones make a harmonious bracelet; the suite also includes a matching necklace. From Bayco’s Mogul collection, which nods to the jewelry of India’s maharajas, this delicate necklace showcases a hand-carved Zambian emerald. Indian jeweler Sweta Jain of Goshwara uses her family’s gemstone business to source dazzling stones, then designs pieces that reflect both her background and a modern femininity; the G-One ring boasts a stunning 47.18-carat carved tanzanite. Born in Hong Kong, Wendy Yue also fuses her heritage with contemporary style. Pieces exploring

nature’s bounty and detailed craftsmanship are her hallmarks. We love these carved jade earrings, which are offset by emeralds and tsavorites.

Natural beauty Although it’s an unexpected base for fine jewelry, don’t overlook wood. Artisans elevate the humble material with fine craftsmanship, precious metals and, of course, diamonds. Brazilian designer Silvia Furmanovich specializes in marquetry, creating incredibly detailed jewelry and clutches from tiny pieces of hand-cut and hand-painted wood. Her cherry blossom earrings showcase the precision of her work. Antonia Miletto loves to feature unusual materials such as wood and resin in her one-of-a-kind pieces, which she designs in her Venice boutique. Fred Leighton may be best known for its fabulous estate jewelry, but we love its modern collection too, which infuses pieces with a slight vintage feel. This rosewood-and- diamond bangle has matching earrings. Pieces from fourth-generation family jewelers Hemmerle are instantly recognizable due to their distinctive modern style, which collectors know are created with traditional Austrian techniques. Eastern origins Spirits

TAKE THREE/// JAPANESE SPIRITS

drinkers often describe their experience of the more sophisticated Japanese whiskies as exotic and seductive.” To enter the world of Japanese whisky, Masa recommends whetting your appetite with Yamazaki 12 single malt and Hibiki 17 blended whisky, both from Suntory. As for collecting, rare releases from the now-closed Karuizawa distillery, which Masa describes as “a piece of Japanese whisky history,” are hot-ticket items. And though small in size, Chichibu distillery has garnered a passionate following for its legendary Ichiro’s Malt Card Series, adopted from the shuttered Hanyu distillery. The highly collectible series features 54 vintage bottles uniquely aged in cognac casks, sherry butts and even bourbon barrels, each retaining an original label resembling a deck of playing cards. Uphold tradition and serve a highball to your friends — never pouring your own as it is disrespectful to serve yourself in Japanese culture — and toast kanpai to the fine Japanese spirit. dekanta.com

In an industry that naturally fixates on old age, it’s not often that you see something new take over. Nonetheless, Japan is coming for the whisky throne. In 1923, Torii Shinjiro built Yamazaki distillery in Shimamoto, outside Kyoto, and introduced the first Japanese whisky, Suntory, as an alternative to scotch. The region’s famously pure water, terrain and climate imparted a different, less peated character on the whisky, separating it from its international contemporaries. A mere century later (the blink of an eye in these circles), the acclaimed Suntory Company now produces the equivalent of Scotland’s entire whisky output between its three distilleries, paving the way for an exciting array of whiskies from Japan. “In recent years, Japanese whiskies have come to be regarded as among the very best in the world and have collected numerous international awards,” says Makiyo Masa, founder and director of leading online Japanese spirits retailer Dekantā. “The Japanese have a reputation for valuing quality over quantity and exhibit exceptional attention to detail; in the production of whisky, this is proving to be a reputation well earned. SAKE Often referred to as Japanese rice wine, sake is actually less acidic and closer to beer in production. Distinctly Japanese essences of yuzu and sansho pepper offer a tangy finish that complements gin’s traditional juniper taste. TOKYO’S TOP TIPPLE

In Tokyo’s chic Ginza neighborhood, Hidetsugu Ueno makes mixology magic at Bar High Five, a not-to-be- missed spot for discerning tipplers. Beginning his bartending career at another local favorite, Star Bar Ginza, Ueno tells us he opened his own tavern in 2008 to “focus on local flavors, spirits, liqueurs and homemade bitters.” Take a seat at the small wooden bar, but don’t expect to peruse a menu. With a kind of cocktail clairvoyance, Ueno chooses recipes based on individual customer tastes — despite not imbibing himself. Drinks on the rocks are a work of art, served over a hand-carved ‘ice diamond’ in the deliberately intimate setting. +81 335 715 815, barhighfive.com

Motoring Graduation season calls for pause and applause. What better way to honor higher achievement than the pursuit of greater independence in the formof four wheels – something both the adults and their children can celebrate

Wild ancestors return Lamborghini Urus

The numerous loops, lines and angles of Lamborghini’s Urus SUV give it the appearance of moving fast even when perfectly still. Considering the 650-horsepower, 4.0L V8 twin-turbo engine goes from 0 to 62mph in 3.6 seconds and receives 627 pound-feet of torque from a 4WD, eight-speed automatic transmission, that’s not tough to imagine. It is tricky, however, to focus on Urus’s Lamborghini-centric elements and muscular features as the eye gets lost in exterior details. With a top speed of 190mph, this Urus, as opposed to the extinct wild ox it’s named after, includes active roll stabilization, adaptive air suspension and the biggest carbon-ceramic braking system on the market. In line with its supercars, the Raging Bull has deemed Urus the first Super SUV. Within, a narrow dashboard pays homage to the brand’s iconic Y theme, not to mention Lamborghini’s first SUV, the military-forward LM002, produced from 1986 to 1993. Its signature hexagon outlines the door handles, cup holders and air vents. Urus offers two different seating configurations: either a 2+2 format or a rear bench. A 21-speaker, 1,700-watt Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system is optional, as is the off-road package, which offers underfloor protection and more durable bumpers, equally practical in the city. “The mission of the car is to double sales, because we will open the door to families,” Alessandro Farmeschi, COO, Automobili Lamborghini America, tells Elite Traveler . With the lowest ground clearance in its class and a rounded roofline, Urus seems firmly planted, a familiar stance wrapped in a five-door package that the Sant’Agata Bolognese–based company hopes will become an everyday driver rather than an occasion vehicle. Refusing to submit to such categories as SUV, off-roader or crossover, Cullinan is instead defined by Rolls-Royce as an ‘all-terrain high-sided vehicle.’ Suitable, seeing as it hails from Goodwood, England, the British countryside where a station wagon is still known as a shooting brake. Three years’ worth of teasers have revealed a behemoth automobile that’s too tall (over six feet) to be a wagon or sedan, too large for a crossover and too grandiose to comply with ‘off-road vehicle.’ Cullinan elaborates on the aluminum space frame architecture recently introduced in Rolls-Royce’s Phantom, adding a V12 turbocharged engine and eight-speed automatic transmission that tops out at over 600 horsepower. With an imposing stature, Cullinan also gleaned design cues from Phantom. A near- twinning front fascia and D-shaped taillights, both of which are a bit more angular, lead to a neatly tapered rear line that reads a touch Range Rover. As Rolls-Royce’s first ever all-wheel-drive vehicle, Cullinan sits on 22in Sport Contact Continentals, the British motoring company’s favored tire brand due to its quietness and sturdy ride. Unlike its siblings, however, Cullinan broke Rolls-Royce’s ominous naming convention and instead found its identity in the famed 3,106-carat diamond discovered in Cullinan, South Africa, in 1905— the largest flawless diamond ever found. “It is the most fitting name for… a motor car of such clarity of purpose, such flawless quality and preciousness, and such presence that it recalibrates the scale and possibility of true luxury,” says Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce. A handful of standard interior and exterior colors let clients mix and match, not to mention the bespoke palette of 44,000 hues. Rolls-Royce offers a Viewing Suite option: a pair of leather seats and a tabletop that emerge from a drawer in the trunk, promising to quite simply redefine tailgating. With a ready-to- order cocktail picnic basket, falconry kit and set of hot and cool boxes, the custom options are plentiful. Corsica is home to the Tour de Corse rally, also known as the ‘Rally of 10,000 Bends.’ The mountainous French island is the perfect

place to test Jaguar’s E-Pace First Edition

A QUAD FOR ALL SEASONS ALFA ROMEO STELVIO QUADRIFOGLIO

First drive: Jaguar E-Pace First Edition

Although Alfa Romeo roared back onto American shores in 2017 with a trio of Super Bowl ads featuring its much-lauded Giulia Quadrifoglio sedan, the sophomore year of the new line is certainly off to the races with the Stelvio Quadrifoglio SUV. When let loose on Germany’s Nürburgring, the 505-horsepower twin-turbocharged Stelvio Quadrifoglio, with an all-aluminum Ferrari-sourced 2.9L V6 engine and optional but impressive Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, annihilated Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo S by eight seconds, securing the fastest-ever lap time for a production SUV. Alfa Romeo adapted its triangular scudetto grille, first unveiled on the 1949 6C 2500 Villa d’Este Coupe, double-wishbone front suspension system and shrewdly named DNA Pro chassis-control system (with Dynamic, Natural and Advanced Efficiency driving modes) from the lesser-powered Stelvio. It adds a fourth mode — Race —which switches off all stability and traction- control enforcement; let the throttle thumping commence. Behind the wheel, the four-leaf-clover-badged Quadrifoglio (Italian for ‘quatrefoil’) SUV evokes words such as ‘balanced,’ thanks to its 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, and ‘thoughtful,’ in part due to its torque- vectoring rear differential, a command that allows 100 percent of its torque to be sent to either rear wheel, keeping in mind traction and driving modes. The end result is a premium crossover automobile that sits wheel-to-wheel with its German and Italian SUV competitors. Inside, the 8.8in infotainment system is buttressed by a 14-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system and Alcantara sport seats. Outside, model-specific larger front air intake and hood vents, quad exhaust tips and expressly developed 20in Pirelli P Zero summer tires ensure inevitable double takes from passersby. For the kids

The undulating landscape of the mountainous French island of Corsica proves unrelenting in its hairpin turns and sharp corners. The Tour de Corse rally, held on this Mediterranean isle since the 1950s, was long ago dubbed the ‘Rally of 10,000 Bends.’ Hyperbole it is not. Laricio pine forests are punctuated by stone-walled towns and glacial reliefs. Putting Jaguar’s freshly minted compact crossover through its paces is certainly no challenge here. Much like Corsican-born Napoleon Bonaparte, the SUV is petite, commanding and chic. With an arched hood and minimal front and rear overhangs, the car measures 173in in length, roughly a foot shorter than its German counterparts. E-Pace’s beauty, though, comes via three additional inches of width. A well-apportioned axle-to-dash ratio grants the Jaguar a handsome robustness. Winding through granite and sedimentary rock formations and down past chilly windswept beaches, E-Pace performs best in dynamic mode (the others are snow, rain, ice, eco and normal). Stronger exiting corners than entering, when its snout raises and its line tightens, E-Pace features a 2.0L transverse-mounted turbocharged four-cylinder engine. As the first four-cylinder-only model in Jaguar’s history, the front-biased all-wheel-drive E-Pace is not built off its larger predecessor, an aluminum-intensive F-Pace, but rather the predominantly steel platform of Range Rover’s Evoque (minus two inches of ground clearance). Further differentiating it from its feline family, E-Pace ditched the verdant hills of jolly England for Graz, Austria, to be assembled in the same factory that constructs BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz G-Class vehicles. For sports enthusiasts, the ‘activity key’ is a waterproof rubber RFID wristband. For techies, there’s Arrival Mode, which pinpoints parking spaces, as well as a Share ETA capability that allows the driver to alert contacts of their arrival time. Everyone will appreciate the 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot for up to eight devices and five USB ports. This forward-thinking connected car technology bridges the gap between raw sport utility vehicle and sedan, proving it’s the ultimate compact crossover.
