SEEING STRIPES

Designers had fun with stripes this season, as seen on everything from sportswear to tailoring and even accessories. Cerruti 1881’s Jason Basmajian went into the archives and reinterpreted classic looks from Nino Cerruti himself, most notably this Breton-striped crew-neck sweater and linen parka. A nonchalant ease characterizes Guillaume Meilland’s collection for Salvatore Ferragamo. Meilland credits René Clément’s 1960 movie Plein Soleil , which was filmed in Taormina, a picturesque hillside town on the island of Sicily, and based on the Patricia Highsmith novel The Talented Mr Ripley . The casual elegance of this striped blazer and crew-neck knit would fit right in on the shores of the Italian Mediterranean. Donatella Versace also dipped into the archives to pay respects to her late brother, Gianni, with a pinstriped suit reminiscent of the menswear that helped make the Versace name an Italian fashion powerhouse. Stripes were also seen on a variety of accessories. This leather-trimmed canvas tote with vintage Gucci logo by Alessandro Michele and these playful striped sunglasses from Dior Homme are two of our favorite examples.
