RAY OF LIGHT

If you attended any major art show in 2019, you would have no doubt come across Anthony James’ multifaceted sculpture: It was the talk of the show at Masterpiece London and drew curious crowds at the Seattle Art Fair. The large-scale artwork, 80” Portal Icosahedron is a fascinating maze of illuminating LED lights, reflecting mirrors, steel structures and geometric shapes — the closer you get, the longer you’ll be sucked in to stare at the never-ending patterns within. British LA-based artist James is no stranger to thought-provoking pieces; he blazed (quite literally) onto the scene in 2008 when he set his prized Ferrari on fire in the name of art. From $250,000, limited to six pieces.

Icosahedrons are polyhedrons of 20 identical triangular facets, thought to be discovered by the philosopher Plato during a mathematical experiment. Anthony James’ 80” Portal Icosahedron shows an infinite combination of geometric shapes constructed from LED lights, reflecting mirrors and steel

The Bodyfriend LBF-750 massage chair takes sleek design notes from the Lamborghini Huracán

As bespoke vehicle possibilities and additional model options reached a fever pitch, automakers aptly switched lanes. Implementing in-house design aesthetics and technology on objects beyond the garage, manufacturers seek to capitalize on a new class of lifestyle collaborations. To achieve true customer loyalty, car companies are utilizing their proprietary research and development to fully immerse clients in their curated universe with alternative yet stylish branded items that are a far cry from gear with a wearable logo

Sitting Pretty Lamborghini Huracán EVO Spyder + Bodyfriend LBF-750 massage chair

Those blessed with height advantages have long known the ubiquitous disadvantages of driving a supercar: never enough legroom (or trunk space, but that’s a separate issue). Sacrifice a bit of comfort for the aural, heart-pumping satisfaction of the 2020 Huracán EVO Spyder, and the reward is handsome. The 5.2-liter V10 reminds humankind of the Raging Bull’s raison d’être . It may not be the fastest (0-60 mph in a healthy 3.1 seconds), or the lightest (at 3,750 lbs it’s 250 lbs heavier than its coupe counterpart), but it’s pure drama. Cars, especially those of the super variety, are supposed to be fun. The unadulterated joy and deep vibrato generated by a Huracán EVO Spyder for both driver and passenger creates a kind of open-air theater in motion. More than sufficient, the Huracán EVO Spyder’s 631 horsepower plays in Strada, pushes in Sport and positively roars in Corsa — there’s a mode for every occasion. The Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Integrata (LDVI) is an intelligent system that optimizes the vehicle via its adaptive dampers, rear-wheel steering and torque vectoring by recording and reporting handling, braking and acceleration, to name a few. Impossible to grasp in a day or two of driving, it’s a promising tech feature that proves Lamborghini’s commitment to its five-year-old nameplate. Once the driving is done, have a stretch and sink into the full-body cockpit of the

LBF-750. Deemed the world’s first-ever Lamborghini massage chair, it’s produced by South Korea-based Bodyfriend, which claims to be the highest-grossing company of its kind in the world. An accessory that could appear in both the Tron and Transformers universes, LBF-750 offers a binaural beat-giving, stress-sensing set of intuitive programming. Its four eye-catching hues denote Lamborghini — an intentional color-matching process and textbook visual cue. The exacting exterior design, and the L-shaped lights of the LBF-750 clearly reflect those same elements in the Huracán's composition. The multi-interface controller would be at home in the car’s center console, while the ‘supercar massage’ setting relies on the chair’s eight speakers to reproduce the sound experience of a Lamborghini chassis. “The lines of a Lamborghini must be recognized,” Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, tells Elite Traveler . Partnering with an Asian healthcare giant is a small but mighty entrée into a burgeoning market that’s not entirely familiar with the Italian automaker. “We are a small company but we are growing. We need to execute the right steps with the right legs.” Lamborghini Huracán EVO Spyder from $287,400, lamborghini.com; Bodyfriend LBF-750 massage chair from $30,000, bodyfriend.com

First Drive Maserati Levante GTS + Maserati e-scooter The cobblestones of the streets that run between the grandiose Piazza Roma and the historical Mercato Albinelli marketplace in Downtown Modena, Italy less resemble stones than melon-sized boulders worn down over centuries. It is here, in a prehistoric Roman town, that Maserati debuted its 28-lb electric scooter. On a pair of 8.5-inch wheels with a few kick-push starts, the scooter silently lunges to life. While many a metropolis has been powerless to stop the invasion of e-scooters, the people of Modena marvel at the latest hometown creation. Emblazoned exclusively with Trident badging and the benchmark trio of air vents, the e-scooter is a sampling of what’s to come from Maserati. Electrification was on the tips of tongues last year, prior to the death of then-chairman Sergio

underfoot, the 22-inch forged aluminum alloy wheels on the Levante GTS signal the capability of this performance-driven edition. It’s no secret that SUVs dominate the lion’s share of nearly every brand’s margins, but buyers in this segment continue to parcel out features — hence the automaker’s response of creating sub-editions within editions. As Maserati’s latest Levante iteration, this twin-turbo 3.8-liter, 550 hp V8 now boasts Q4 intelligent all-wheel drive. Climbing up the hairpin turns to the hilltop town of Castelvetro, Italy, the Q4 sent the engine’s torque to the rear wheels, and the turbochargers audibly sighed at the lift of the throttle. It’s not a case of mistaken identity: The Levante GTS doesn’t feel like a sports car trapped in an SUV’s body. Quite refreshingly the opposite, it handles like a purpose-built performance sport vehicle that’s also outfitted with full-grain Pieno Fiore natural leather and a 900W, 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Pedal power meets horsepower under the same umbrella design language, which is keen on carbon fiber components and lightweight, albeit functional, performance. Smooth surface track days and pavement dreams become a reality thanks to the company-coined

‘signature BMW experience.’ It almost reads like propaganda, were it not the driving force behind BMW’s M-line. As the most powerful engine in BMW’s lineup, the M8 Competition Coupe delivers 617 hp from a 4.4-liter V8 engine. Its

exhilarating 0 to 60 mph occurs in just 3.0 seconds. The coupe growls as it goes, happily consuming asphalt and, upon stopping, often begs for more. From the pinched, dual-lined hood up over the double-bubble contour of its carbon-fiber

M Bike clearly draws its inspiration from the M lineup. The matte black paintwork and MMotorsport color stripes create an easy allusion. But it’s the 11-gear Shimano SLX/XT groupset with carbon fiber fork, spacers and seat posts that mimic the lightweight design and trackside style of the Coupe. Should a customer place the bike in the foreground and the car in the background, similar swoops and shapes abound. The sporty yet composed likeness is undeniable. Gone is the fear of sharp angles and deep, robust curves. Nearly two decades in the making, this vehicle signals a significant expansion of the rarefied second- generation 8 series. Once she embarks on her inaugural journey in August 2020, Crystal Cruises’ groundbreaking new yacht, Crystal Endeavor , will be the most spacious, purpose-built, polar-class expedition yacht in the world, as well as the most luxurious ship with a Polar Code-designated ranking. She offers three types of voyages for up to 200 passengers: Remote Expeditions, which are active, expert-led voyages to the Earth’s most remote polar regions, including traversing the Siberian Sea from Russia to Norway; Cultural Discovery, where you will visit countries renowned for history, art and nature, including Japan, Brazil and Argentina; and Destination Exploration, a discovery of lesser-known regions’ biodiversity and unique wildlife, such as fairy penguins (a diminutive species that only grows up to 1.5 ft) in Australia and New Zealand. No matter which voyage you choose, the ship fosters discovery and adventure by her ability to access smaller ports. There are outdoor observation decks on six out of the eight passenger decks — there is even a hot tub to lounge in as you gaze at the stars or, if you’re lucky, the Northern Lights. elite traveler WINTER 2019 42 Yachts by Samantha Coles

As the world’s first fast hybrid yacht with a fast displacement hull form, Home is a pioneering new vessel that offers perhaps some of life’s greatest luxuries: peace and quiet. She is made of lightweight aluminum and can use diesel or electric propulsion (read: using less fuel), enabling silent cruising at a speed of up to nine knots. When she is in silent electric mode, she creates around 46 decibels of noise — for comparison, that is the same as the soft patter of falling raindrops. When she debuted at the Monaco Yacht Show, she won the MYS-RINA Green award for the Most Environmentally Friendly yacht, the Most Innovative Yacht award fromWorld Yachts and the Baccarat SuperYacht World trophy. Her exterior of clean lines is slick and minimalist, and her floor-to-ceiling windows admit endless ocean views. Those views take center stage inside, too, thanks to the decor: It is decidedly simple and fresh, with No place like Home

modern furnishings and just a few choice pops of color. There is little artwork on board, as the owner wanted no distractions from the natural surroundings. Home has six staterooms, a gym, an expansive sun deck with Jacuzzi, a large open bar and plenty of fun toys on board for flyboarding and paddleboarding. She even has something to delight the most seasoned sailor: A ‘flying chair’ rises from the bow and offers the occupant 360-degree views. It can even be used when the vessel is underway if conditions are favorable. Up until recently, Home was, well, home for the majority of the year for her owner. She is now available for charter in the Caribbean (including Antigua; turn to p146 for our complete guide to the island) and the Bahamas in the winter season, or the Mediterranean in the summer. Eviation’s new Alice aircraft is fully sustainable and has zero emissions

THE FUTURE IS ELECTRIC

flies at a cruising altitude of 10,000 ft and has a cruise speed of around 240 to 260 knots. Sustainability and efficiency aren’t Alice’s only draws. Bar-Yohay exclusively tells Elite Traveler that he hopes to make environmentally friendly travel accessible for everyone. He says: “For the first time in over 50 years, Eviation has created a new breed of aircraft fleets and a new era in aviation with the all-electric Alice. Operating at a fraction of the cost of conventional jetliners, our Alice will redefine how people travel regionally and usher in a new era of flying that is quieter, cleaner and cost-effective.” Alice might even become popular with socially conscious private owner-operators who often travel shorter distances for weekend golf trips, business meetings or family getaways. Be sure to place your order now and prepared to be the envy of the FBO. From $4m. Contact info@eviation.co, eviation.co

And its design looks straight out of a time machine: To increase stability, reduce drag and distribute propulsion, it has a main pusher propeller at the tail of the aircraft, two pusher propellers at the wingtips and a uniquely curved nose. The aircraft relies on a cutting-edge battery that, on one charge, operates for two-and-a-half hours. The startup enlisted Siemens to collaborate on advanced motor technology, and worked with Honeywell on the fly-by-wire avionics. So far, Eviation has received a significant order from regional US commercial airliner Cape Air for 92 planes set to deliver in 2022 — impressive, being that Alice’s first flight is planned for the end of 2019 and, at the time of publication, FAA certification is scheduled to be confirmed by 2021. Cape Air’s main points of travel are between New York and New England, perfect for Alice’s range of 650 miles. It

It would seem that the future of electric air travel isn’t far off, at least not for Israeli startup Eviation. At the 2019 Paris Air Show, the innovative, high-tech company unveiled a groundbreaking prototype for an all-electric, nine-passenger aircraft called Alice, the world’s first fully operational, electric passenger plane. The launch of Alice heralds a new era of aviation — and what Eviation CEO and co-founder Omer Bar-Yohay calls a new breed of aircraft — one that doesn’t require a drop of fuel. Alice has an electric engine that is fully sustainable and has zero emissions, which also means less noise compared to other jets. The aircraft is made with 95 percent composite materials, which are lightweight, have advanced thermal-regulating technology and aerodynamic efficiency, and offer flight stability and extreme propulsion.

SAFETY FIRST Cirrus Aircraft, creator of the world’s first single-engine personal jet, the Cirrus Vision SF50, is redefining safety standards once again. After launching the first parachute system for a personal jet — which has landed 176 people so far — Cirrus takes a safe landing in case of a disabled pilot a step further with Safe Return, a new technology available in all Vision Jets starting in 2020. It is the first-ever autonomous landing system in an aircraft, enacted by a simple press of a button on the ceiling of the plane. Once the button is pressed, the plane lands itself at the nearest airport, taking into account fuel load and weather conditions. Because of its small size, the Vision Jet can land on nearly any runway (up to 5,000 in the US alone). Once Safe Return is activated, signals are sent to air traffic control and local EMT and fire stations in case of a medical emergency. And don’t worry — the landing is as smooth as can be. Thatcher Wine from Juniper Books is a master at curating bespoke libraries — his most whimsical and striking projects can be seen in his new book, For the Love of Books

WRAPPED UP IN BOOKS

There are certain things that stand the test of time: No matter how far technology advances, libraries still hold a dignified allure, and there’s nothing quite like the satisfying feeling of finishing a great book. Home libraries are more than just storage spaces; they provide sanctuary, one lined with precious titles that act as a window into our soul and the inner workings of our minds. Books have the power to make us laugh, cry, learn and see the world in a different way. Curating a library is an entirely personal process, as Thatcher Wine of Juniper Books knows. He tells us, “It requires listening and observing — I ask clients about their favorite authors, books and subjects, and really listen to the answers. But I observe every detail about a client’s home, their hobbies and how they interact with family in order to develop a sense of what should be on their shelves. Then, I use my expertise and experience handling hundreds of thousands of books — where to buy them, what is in print and what is more scarce. I step back and look at the collection of books I’m building and ask myself if everything belongs; there are constant adjustments to get it just right.” You have likely encountered a few of his curated libraries: Four Seasons Residences Austin, Shady Oaks Country Club in Texas and the NoMad Hotel in New York, to name a few. He has also created a number of home projects, including a 600-book library for Gwyneth Paltrow. Interestingly, Wine has

created custom book jackets so that the books can match the library’s color scheme (no judging books by their covers here). Wine tells us about a client who wanted a library of around 1,000 books on a wide variety of subjects, therefore having very different jackets: “We proposed a very bright, color-coded library in our custom jackets for every book. The end result was a library of books everyone in the family wants to read in a completely one-of-a- kind presentation on the shelves. When I took a step back to photograph it, the books looked like jelly beans from a distance! It’s a great feeling when the books really feel like they belong.” juniperbooks.com

STYLE MEN’S WATCHES

CARTIER ROTONDE DE CARTIER PANTHÈRE WOODMARQUETRY The Cartier panther has been a distinctive moniker of the brand since the mysterious and beautiful animal made its first appearance on a wristwatch in 1914, and it has melted hearts ever since. This newest interpretation is created using hundreds of tiny pieces of wood marquetry. Each piece is individually cut from ultra-thin slices of wood; then they are placed one by one on the dial using tiny tweezers, creating an incredibly detailed (and tiny) jigsaw puzzle of the panther’s sive face. n request, 18K rose gold, Cartier w York, +1 212 446 3400, cartier.

ANIMAL INSTINCTS

Today’s finest watchmakers are breathing life into their dials by using them as canvases to reinterpret majestic animals and birds. Referred to as métiers d’art , decorating a watch dial is an art that dates back centuries. Today, brands and their artisans have elevated existing techniques to new heights and developed ever-more innovative methods for ornamentation. Artisans turn to unusual materials such as lacquer made from the sap of special trees for paintings, or wood veneer to create unique patterning. Creative processes run the gamut from enameling and engraving to painting, sculpting and marquetry. Most of these dials are incredibly time-consuming to design, often requiring dozens of hours of meticulous work

JAQUET DROZ PETITE HEURE MINUTE LION

A master at métiers d’art , Jaquet Droz often turns to hand-painting to achieve its tributes to nature. This mighty king of the jungle — with such intensity in the face — is the result of dozens of hours of work. Using an array of fine brushes, some with no more than a single hair, the artist interprets the lion on a backdrop of black grand feu enamel, taking great care to achieve the minute characteristics of the fur, whiskers and eyes. Some details are so fine that they are barely perceptible to the naked eye. $32,200 in 18K red gold, Jaquet Droz in New York,

BOVET 1822 AMADEO FLEURIER 43 MINIATURE PAINTING OF A HORSE This stunning horse dial begins with a shimmering white mother-of-pearl orb. To achieve the details of this magnificent horse with its sinewy muscles and elaborate mane, the artisan hand-paints the motif using a polished lacquer technique, which allows for the best possible definition. Eight layers of translucent lacquer are then added to protect the dial and add luster; the process takes a full week to complete using a microscope and fine-bristle brushes. This Amadeo watch converts from wristwatch to pocket watch and table clock. $82,000 in 18K rose gold, Cellini Jewelers in New York, +1 212 888 0505, bovet.com
