Each year my golfing buddies and I seek out a golfing destination that challenges our amateur golfing skills and provides our group plenty of off the links entertainment. We have had Los Ca- bos on our target list for several years and finally decided to take the plunge. Even though we knew Los Cabos was a world-famous resort des- tination, we had no concept of just how spectac- ular the golf courses really were. The reviews and photos of the courses we researched before our trip were nowhere near as impressive as the actual experience. What really impressed us, besides the amazing vistas -- which made it hard to stay focused on golf -- was the fact that the courses we played were designed by profes- sional golfers that we had followed our entire lives. With Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Davis Love III, Tiger Woods, Tom Weiskopf and Fred Couples signature courses all concentrated within a few miles of each other, we felt like we were on the PGA Tour. We started our tour at the 27-hole Puerto Los Cabos Golf Club, at the only course in the world designed by both Jack Nicklaus and Greg Nor- man. Both the Marina course and the Mission course were amazing. We were so impressed we played an extra nine on the newly completed Jack Nicklaus back nine of the Marina track. Next, we played the One&Only Palmilla champi- onship course, the first Jack Nicklaus designed course in Latin America. Palmilla is considered the “Grand Dame” of Los Cabos golf and set the standard for the future of Los Cabos as a golf Mecca. We had such a tremendous experience and returned that evening for a terrific dinner at one of the resorts gourmet restaurants.

After a day on the beach and an evening exploring the unique art galleries in San Jose del Cabo, we attacked the Robert Trent Jones Jr. masterpiece at Cabo Real. This was my personal favorite be- cause of its traditional layout and pure test of a golfer’s skills. Our next challenge was with Tom Weiskopf’s Desert course at Cabo Del Sol. The holes along the Sea of Cortes and through the desert arroyos will be etched in our memories forever. Before our week was finished, we enjoyed What really impressed us, besides the amazing vistas -- which made it hard to stay focused on golf -- was the fact that the courses we played were designed by profes- sional golfers that we had followed our entire lives. a round on the Davis Love III designed Dunes course and Tiger Woods’, El Cardonal, both locat- ed in the luxurious Diamante development. We had a wonderful time and played less than half of the fabulous courses Los Cabos currently open in Los Cabos. We plan to return soon to play the new Fred Couples and Greg Norman courses planned to open in 2018 at the new Maravilla and Rancho Solmar developments, as well as some others that we missed on this trip. Gracias Los Cabos, for the best golf outing ever!

The Cassiopeia Specially designed for London’s Masterpiece Art Fair 2017, Linley’s Cassiopeia screen is an interpretation of one of Jonathan Yeo’s earliest nude paintings, Scarlett (Cassiopeia Study) , 1999. The first time the British artist has collaborated on a piece of furniture, Yeo worked closely with Linley to create the marquetry screen, hand selecting around 40 different types of veneer including eucalyptus, sycamore and quilted maple, many of which are used in their natural form. The screens are in demand for superyacht interiors and we can see why — the reverse side of the screen is dressed in a rich claret Connolly leather, with a brushed brass and polished aluminium coat hook and hanger on one panel, a glass mirror and walnut accessory tray on the middle panel, and, acting as a vertical bar, the third panel has shelves with polished aluminium rails for holding crystal glasses and decanters. $169,406, available at Linley Belgravia, London, +44 207 824 7223, davidlinley.com

The white gold dial features relief-engraved stars and circles covered with iridescent blue enamel

Watches

In a showcase of its manufacture’s skill and artistic prowess, the 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar Handwerkskunst is the sixth limited-edition timepiece to bear A Lange & Söhne’s prestigious handwerkskunst (craftsmanship) designation. Testing its artisans, A Lange & Söhne combines engraving and enameling for the first time on a dial. The white gold dial features relief-engraved stars and circles, each covered with iridescent blue enamel. For a relief engraving, artisans remove negative space, so here the stars appears to float atop a blue enamel sky — a rare and difficult technique. On the back, a hinged half-hunter case features a medallion with a relief engraving of Luna, the goddess of the moon, on a tremblage -engraved background. Tremblage engraving creates a grained texture, visible here and on the movement. The medallion is encircled with a blue enamel star and cloud relief engraving. Underneath, the visible movement showcases A Lange & Söhne’s impeccable finishings, including more relief and A Lange & Söhne’s Handwerkskunst

tremblage engravings, granular finishings on the train bridge and a continuation of the star motif from the dial. While its new artistry and finishings are a marvel on their own, the timepiece is technically impressive — when it was first released, it won the prestigious Grand Complication award at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. Combining a perpetual calendar and a split-second chronograph is uncommon, and here they work together in elegant harmony. The perpetual calendar shows month and leap year cycle at 3 o’clock, date and day of the week at 9 o’clock and has a beautiful moonphase at 6 o’clock that complements the celestial dial. The perpetual calendar will not need correcting until 2100, and the moonphase will be accurate for 122.6 years. At 12 o’clock there is the power reserve indicator and 30-minute totalizer. Surrounding the artistic decorations and recessed subdials is a flange ring with railway-minute track. Limited to 20 pieces, the 41.9mmwhite gold timepiece is sure to become a collector’s favorite. BRAND PROFILE VOUTILAINEN

One of the industry’smost beloved independent watchmakers, Kari Voutilainen is as well-known for his artistry and dedication to métiers d’art as he is for his innovative, and sometimes mind-bending, timepieces featuring in-housemovements. Voutilainen uses traditional horology techniques, but the resulting timepieces are anything but traditional thanks to design and a liberal use of color. Contact voutilainen@voutilainen.ch, +41 32 861 4832, voutilainen.ch

2. Aki-No-Kure Blending traditional Japanese lacquer with high horology, Voutilainen collaborated with Unryuan, the famed lacquer studio in Japan, to create this incredible bespoke watch. The decoration alone took over 1,000 hours. Gold dust, gold leaf, mother-of-pearl, abalone shell and Yakou-gai (green turban shell) depict a masterpiece of Japanese grass gracefully waving in the wind. On the inside case, there is a dragonfly and ripples of water, and the movement and caseback are also decorated. $350,000 3. GMT-6 One of the most elegant GMT watches currently on the market, the GMT-6 features a fine guiochelléd dial with several examples of the craft. The GMT is indicated with a subdial at 6 o’clock and includes a day/night indicator in transparent grand feu enamel. The integrated in-house movement has two escape-wheels for increased precision and a 65-hour power reserve. It is easily adjusted — by simply pressing the crown, the GMT disc advances by and traditional guillochéd dial is a perfect encapsulation of this brand. $89,000 1. Vingt-8 ISO Here, telling time is not as easy as a quick glance at the wrist, but that’s not the point. The unique method of telling time requires a bit of thought, which creates a deeper relationship because it’s not simply a reflex. Each hour, the minute and hour hands overlap, and every half hour the hands are opposite each other, forming a straight line. At 15 minutes and 45 minutes, the hands are at a right angle (90 degrees and -90 degrees). The combination of unusual movement

Zenith unveils Defy Lab, what it calls the world’s most accurate mechanical watch. This is possible because of a new oscillator: a single piece of 0.5mm-thick silicon that replaces the traditional sprung balance. This innovation allows it to oscillate at a frequency five times higher (15 Hz) than a standard movement, and results in tremendous accuracy for up to 95 percent of the 60-hour power reserve. Its certified daily rate is approximately 0.3 seconds, and is classed as a chronometer by Besançon Observatory. The 10 watches feature an Aeronith case — a new patent-pending hybrid material made of aluminum foam and a special polymer that is 2.7 times lighter than titanium — but each watch has a different color. While all 10 unique versions have been pre-sold, new pieces will be released next year and we are excited to see how Zenith incorporates this technology into future movements. Men’s style COVERT AFFAIRS

A good coat is one of the best investments you can make. Legendary New York Times photographer and unofficial cultural anthropologist Bill Cunningham once said: “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.” During winter nothing helps you combat those freezing temperatures like a warm coat. It is usually the first thing people see when they meet you, and sometimes you keep it on indoors until your body adjusts to room temperature. Davide Marello’s collection for Boglioli was an ode to Milan in the winter, when a plaid coat with peak lapels can provide a dramatic contrast to the foggy Milanese streets. Tomas Maier created a lush shearling wrap coat for Bottega Veneta that in the hands of a less experienced designer could have made the wearer look like a teddy bear. However, Maier’s precise tailoring means the shearling conforms to his will and creates an alluring silhouette. Brunello Cucinelli is a fan of blending the old with the new. He understands that while men might not want to buy a completely new wardrobe each season, they can incorporate key pieces here and there to update their look. True to form, Cucinelli highlighted the importance of beautiful fabrications. Nowhere was that more evident than in a double-breasted coat that looks effortlessly put together. Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino heralded the return of the gentleman — but not in the traditional sense. He believes that “expressing your fragility is the new strength.” This youthful optimism was shown as he paired a geometric checked overcoat with Valentino sneakers, which have gained popularity over the past few seasons.

COLORFUL COATS Winter blues? Not when you’re wearing a fabulous coat in a Crayola-bright color.

Solid-colored, color-blocked or in a sharp print —we love them all. Embrace head-to-toe color courtesy of Givenchy, where streetwear influences are tempered by over-the-knee boots and a flared skirt. At Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld makes sharply tailored plaid suiting ultra-feminine with a hot pink and white pattern. Michael Kors is known for his love of color, and we especially love how a bright yellow trench pairs with silk floral pajama-style pieces. Not a coat, but a mod cape fromDelpozo is a whimsical way to incorporate one of resort’s most ubiquitous colors: lime green. Color-blocking with light blue in a ladylike silhouette, it’s a piece that can carry through the seasons. Now you just need to decide how to accessorize your colorful coat. Go all in with a contrasting color to create your own color-blocked look, or stick to luxe neutrals to tone it down just a bit. Max Mara’s special- edition mini Whitney bag comes in a rich, citrine-colored velvet and has crystal details on the convertible shoulder strap. ONE FOR THE LADIES

With a female artistic director, Paula Gerbase, in house, it’s a natural evolution for storied men’s shoemaker John Lobb to reintroduce its women’s ready-to-wear collection (bespoke women’s shoes were always available in its Paris atelier, and Gerbase tells us that women have been buying the men’s shoes in smaller sizes for years). Handmade in Northampton, England using a 190-step manufacturing process, each elegant shoe is expertly crafted and durable, a welcome surprise for women who are accustomed to resoling shoes after just a few wears. Gerbase says: “As a woman, I have never been able to find the quality of raw materials, attention to detail and respect for the process in women’s footwear as I have experienced within menswear. The quality is simply not there.” Using its archive of incredible bespoke women’s shoes as inspiration, John Lobb introduces six styles with traditional details including hand-wheeled soles and decorative nail heel patterns. The most fashion-forward shoe is the Willow, a low boot with three buckles, and you’ll find loafers, Chelsea boots, single-buckle shoes, reverse Jodhpur boots and, of course, an Oxford. These styles will look just as good paired with fashion’s current 1990s revival as they will with a sharply tailored suit. considered the ‘king of all gemstones,’ but we love rubellites and red sapphires nearly as much. And yes, while red stones are perfect for the holiday season, these pieces feature stunning craftsmanship and stones that are well suited to wear year-round. At Graff and Bayco, rubies take center stage. Graff’s Rhythmbracelet features pear-shaped and round-cut rubies, which serve as a melodious accent to nearly 35 carats of sparkling diamonds. Bayco’s cuff sets the focus squarely on its large rubies, with five incredible cushion-cut stones weighing over 40 carats spanning the top of a bracelet. For a less traditional take on rubies, Fernando Jorge’s Electric Shock collection features pear-shaped rubies set ‘backwards’ for a contemporary take on one of history’s most loved stones. Lydia Courteille’s ornate ring features a mix of red stones to create an incredibly rich, red backdrop for a significant 10.50-carat rubellite. Charles Krypell’s romantic bracelet uses diamonds and yellow gold to highlight over 20 carats of rubellite. Bentley & Skinner, a London-based company holding two royal warrants, specializes in fine antique jewelry. Its beautiful late-Victorian crescent brooch features graduating cushion-cut rubies with old brilliant-cut diamonds as an accent.

GARDEN OF EDEN

Floral jewelry has long been a source of inspiration for designers, but with changing tastes and a more adventurous aesthetic running through collections, designers are taking more risks by mixing stones and eschewing traditional rules governing proportion and scale. Mismatched earrings, necklaces exploding with life and color, and rings that span multiple fingers are just a few of the ways designers are exploring all of the earth’s bounty. For its collaboration with Rihanna, Chopard features a wild array of stones in its mismatched earrings. One features a red flower and the other a blue butterfly. Each drips with differently cut stones and is finished with pear-shaped stones, including a 4.42-carat aquamarine. In its high jewelry collection, Alta Moda, Dolce & Gabbana’s floral necklace features intricately carved gold brimming with leaves and flowers. A highlight is the 46.65-carat carved coral rose. Anna Hu andWendy Yue use long rings and brooches to showcase their craftsmanship and creativity. Wendy Yue’s delicate flowers trail across the finger and Anna Hu’s delicate birds appear poised to take flight from a flowering white gold branch. FromDior’s Versailles collection, these garden earrings are a veritable cornucopia of flowers, with different colored stones and pearls creating both the center and the petals.
