Object of desire

If you’ve ever stayed at The Savoy in London, you know all about how wonderful the cloud- like beds are. Savoir beds were first created for the hotel in 1905, and to stop competitors from buying the sumptuous beds, The Savoy bought the company. Throughout history, many famous characters have laid their heads on the handcrafted beds, among them Fred Astaire, Louis Armstrong, Marlene Dietrich and Claude Monet, who spent his mornings painting the sun rising over Waterloo Bridge during his many visits. Fittingly, Savoir has partnered with London’s National Gallery, and now any piece of art from its legendary collection of over 2,300 pieces can decorate a Savoir bed. Clients choose their desired painting, be it a Monet, Degas or Rembrandt, and Savoir prints the work onto fabric that is then upholstered onto the headboard and base. Customers can choose between lustrous velvet, textured linen viscose or classic cotton, as well as a number of finishes such as wood trim and an array of brass and upholstered legs. All commissions are approved by the National Gallery to uphold the integrity of the artwork, and each bed is meticulously handmade by artisans in Savoir’s workshops in London and Wales. Every small detail is considered, from the horsetail padding sourced from South America to the ‘star-lashing’ of the springs — a traditional (and painstaking) method of linking the springs by hand that stops them moving laterally. The mattress can be created to your exact comfort preference; especially handy if you have any tension in your body. Customize your mattress topper to minimize pressure points on shoulders and hips and help blood circulation, or even create one where one half suits your needs while the other half is perfect for your partner. Each Savoir bed is signed and dated by the artisan who fashioned it. Master craftsman Arjoon, who has been making beds with the company since 1987, still creates beds and has trained 40 artisans to maintain the high standards. From $17,000 for a king set (includes a No 2 Mattress and HW Topper). Contact James Harper, showroom manager, jamesharper@savoirbeds.co.uk, +44 207 493 4444, savoirbeds.com Sleeping beauty

The Rotonde de Cartier Mysterious Day and Night watch also comes in stunning 18K white gold

FLOATING TIME

During the day, the moon hides beneath the movement

Ever since Cartier’s first mystery clock in 1912, the mysterious movement has been one of the jeweler’s specialties. This year, for the first time, it adds a day-and-night complication to a mysterious watch. And if that weren’t enough, the timepiece has retrograde minutes, too. At first glance, you’ll be pulled into the mystery of the dial and forget about time altogether. A rich brown ring encircles the outside of the dial, holding a half-disc of golden radiating guilloché and a sun that appears to float, hanging like the sun in our sky. As day slips away and turns to night, the sun disappears beneath the guilloché and the moon rises, starting its journey across the dial. It’s a romantic way to consider time, mimicking the heavens themselves. The watch splits hours on the top half, showing only 12 hours at once, and displays minutes using a retrograde function on the bottom half, which cleverly hides the movement and guards its mystery. The hand-wound movement has a 48-hour power reserve and is surprisingly thin, measuring just 10.7mm in height. Cartier Rotonde de Cartier Mysterious Day and Night watch, $66,500 in 18K rose gold, $71,000 in 18K white gold, available by appointment, +1 800 227 8437, cartier.com

The skeletonized movement lets you see the numbered discs slide into the apertures that indicate hole, number of shots in that hole and total score

Par for the course Forget scorecards and apps. Hublot is coming for your golf game with a new watch that allows you to count your strokes while out on the links. The cleverly designed Big Bang Unico Golf watch follows the design codes of a chronograph, but uses its pushers to count strokes and advance to the next hole. Each has golf-inspired elements — the pushers at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock are shaped like putters, and the pusher at 8 o’clock is shaped like a tee. Click the pusher at 2 o’clock to count each stroke, and the pusher at 4 o’clock to move onto the next hole. The pusher at 8 o’clock resets the counters to zero at the end of the round and incorporates a fail-safe lock to prevent you from accidentally resetting your score, which might be tempting after a double bogey. The skeletonized movement lets you marvel at the innovative technology and see the numbered discs slide into the apertures that indicate hole, number of shots in that hole and total score. Its ultralight weight — just 97.93 grams — won’t interfere with your stroke, and Hublot’s partnership with Dustin Johnson, the world’s number-one golfer, ensures that it’s been vigorously tested and won’t become damaged during play. With this on your wrist, you’ll be the envy of your country club. Big Bang Unico Golf, $31,500, available at Hublot in New York, +1 212 308 0408, hublot.com

DPROFILE MORITZ GROSSMANN BRAN

Karl Moritz Grossmann, a founder of the Glashütte watch industry in the mid-1800s, is one of the many watchmaking giants to have the rights to his name acquired and used as a brand. So you would not be out of line to wonder what makes Moritz Grossmann watches special. First, the modern brand, founded in 2008, is based in Glashütte, the German town whose timepiece reputation now rivals that of the Swiss. Second, the modern manufacture was founded by a woman, CEO Christine Hutter. In the male- dominated watch industry, female watchmakers and executives remain uncommon, and to be both is rare indeed. After a career as a watchmaker and spending time at prestigious brands such as A Lange & Söhne, she purchased the rights toMoritz Grossmann with the intention of building a manufacture, developing and producing in-house movements, and creating timepieces with beautiful finishings and serious technical prowess. And the combination clearly works, as this year it celebrates its 10th anniversary with three fabulous watches that build on its history and look to the future. Available at Cellini Jewelers in NewYork, contact@cellinijewelers.com, +1 800 235 5464, A special anniversary watch, this unusual design suspends the petite caliber 102.0, measuring just 26mm, inside a 44.5mm case. The dial is a hand-cut relief engraving of the moon topped with two grand-feu enamel dials. It is held in place by four architectural struts, giving the impression that it is, in fact, lost in space. Limited to 26 pieces, $45,000 2. Tefnut 1001 Nights The asymmetrical case inMoritz Grossmann’s showstopping ladies’ mechanical watch was created with jewelry designer Michael Koh. The lugs are suspended on one side and topped with blue cabochons, and the asymmetry is matched in the radiant guilloché on the dial. The subdial at 3 o’clock features a beautiful desert landscape created with inlaid mother-of-pearl underneath a crescent moon. $39,000 3. AtumBackpage Continually celebrated for its beautiful movements, the marque listened to collectors and created its first watch with the movement visible on the dial, using a new caliber, 107.0. Essentially flipping and mirroring the Atum movement, it showcases the 2/3 plate construction, ratchet wheel with three-band snailing and an intricately decorated cantilevered balance cock. Limited to 18 pieces in platinum, $46,000 grossmann-uhren.com 1. Benu Lost in Space

There were plenty of somewhat-out- there trends this season. Menswear designers showed everything from short shorts to jumpsuits to extremely oversized pants and jackets. But to balance all of that out, designers also sent some beautifully wearable looks down the runway in earth tones of stone, sand, olive, tobacco and rust. Ralph Lauren, the master of American sportswear, layered a linen topcoat over a simple crewneck sweater and gabardine trousers for a tonal look that exudes effortless elegance. Brunello Cucinelli’s collection referenced Out of Africa with safari jackets and AU NATUREL

Alessandro Michele at Gucci has the unique talent of not only keeping his finger on the pulse of what’s cool, quirky and sometimes over-the-top, but also creating collections that are commercially successful across the globe. He’s not just building a collection each season, but building a community of Gucci devotees. We see his polished suiting gaining some more corporate fans too. Accessory-wise, stay away from black this season. We love these driving gloves from Hestra, briefcase from Christian Louboutin, olive suede Chelsea boots from Red Wing Heritage, and tortoise sunglasses from Tom Ford.

lightweight fabrics in colors that reflected the setting of the film. Boglioli did not stray away from what it does best: the lightweight blazer. This season it was unlined and came in an array of fabrics to suit any occasion. Miuccia Prada’s thesis for the season was “on one side is the virtual reality and on the other is the reality of the human part,” and comics and graphic novels played a key role in the collection. However, in the midst of all that fantasy, Mrs Prada also offered more realistic looks in neutrals such as camel and khaki with some pops of color — perhaps as a nod to Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent.

Luxe luggage It might be difficult to pinpoint the exact moment when the glamour of traveling transitioned to bumbling discomfort. Maybe it was around the same time when sartorial choices favored tracksuits and sweatpants over elegant suits and hats, but that aesthetic has also trickled down into baggage that’s anything but elegant. Let’s buck the trend by hailing the return of refined luggage. Louis Vuitton spent two years to develop its Horizon Titane collection by Marc Newson, which it claims features the first genuine titanium case in the world. Typically reserved for the aerospace industry, titanium is immensely durable but can be incredibly difficult to shape, which perhaps is why it hasn’t been used in luggage before. Parisian luggagemaker Goyard returns to its roots with the Malle Armoire, a glorious steamer trunk with a rack for hanging items and separate compartments for accessories and shoes. The easiest way to change your look on a trip without overloading your new luxe luggage is to pack several pairs of sunglasses. And when all you’re wearing for days on end is a pair of swim trunks and shades, they make up 50 percent of your ensemble, so make them count

Yellow and electric green can be daunting colors to wear, but we think the best time to give them a try is when you have a hint of a summer glow. At Carolina Herrera, a gauzy dress with structured bodice would be well suited for a wedding — you’ll certainly pop in the photo album. Designer Brandon Maxwell rose to fame in recent years thanks to his flawless tailoring, beautiful silhouettes and pieces designed for women to actually wear. This jumpsuit would be work- appropriate with a blazer on top and is dressy enough for evening. Just add a fabulous brooch and you’re good to go. At Tom Ford, different colors of head-to- toe jaguar print walked the runway. We love the tiered halter dresses, which are high fashion when worn with the matching tights, but could be just as gorgeous worn barefoot at a chic beachside restaurant. Delpozo’s feminine, ruffled dress is absolutely dreamy, and the asymmetrical hem lends a slight edge to the look. Yellow not your color? For clothing, maybe. But fancy-colored yellow diamonds suit everyone. Graff’s Abstract earrings feature different shapes of fancy- yellow diamonds and LJ West’s cocktail ring has a staggering 16.78-carat fancy-vivid-yellow diamond. LIME AND LEMON

Jewelry Charming critters When rendered in diamonds, opals and glittering colored gemstones, insects are more than welcome at a garden party. Anna Hu’s sensational high jewelry delights collectors with its intricate work and impeccable settings. In her butterfly ring, a wild mix of gems including opals, diamonds, moonstones and Paraíba tourmalines come together to re-create the magic and iridescence of a butterfly’s wings. Emeralds, tsavorites and peridots give depth and dimension to a beguiling moth from Hemmerle; mixing invisible settings with cabochon cuts and brilliant cuts, the German jeweler showcases its craftsmanship, particularly in the impressively lifelike antennae. The impact of Jean Schlumberger’s nature-inspired designs for Tiffany & Co in the 1950s and 1960s cannot be overstated, which explains why his pieces remain instantly recognizable today. We love the sharp angles and inspired design of this cricket clip. David Webb has dedicated a collection, Kingdom, to the animal world. This adorable salamander brooch uses white enamel and 18K yellow gold to offset a sapphire body and emerald eyes. Van Cleef & Arpels places a ladybug with mystery-set rubies atop a delicately curled leaf to hide the dial on this elegant secret watch.

Jacob & Co ring in platinum with 58.72-carat sugarloaf-cabochon natural Burmese blue sapphire and 3 carats brilliant-cut diamonds, price on request, available at Jacob & Co in New York, +1 212 719 5887, jacobandco.com

MOODY BLUES There’s something about blue sapphires that jewelers find bewitching. Historically, blue sapphires have been associated with royalty and nobility, and thanks to the British royal family, it has made a resurgence in engagement rings. In today’s high jewelry, the more intense blue stones seem to radiate their own light from within. In one Jacob & Co ring, a stunning 58.72-carat sugarloaf-cabochon blue sapphire is featured, letting the beauty of the natural Burmese gem shine through. Italian jeweler Picchiotti uses plenty of color in its classic collection, and this year one of founder Giuseppe Picchiotti’s favorite pieces is a sapphire suite. The necklace has 53 perfectly matched sapphires, and the earrings pair strands of sapphires and diamonds. Using rose-cut sapphires, Sutra plays with light and transparency in this beautiful bracelet, which mimics water trickling amid diamond stepping stones. One of the more modern pieces, Boghossian’s Kissing earrings are sure to be the star of any party — by setting emerald-cut diamonds atop large cushion-cut Ceylon sapphires, it appears that the diamonds are inside the sapphires. And Oscar Heyman’s silky necklace is made up of 80 marquise-cut sapphires set in twos, each pair punctuated by a diamond.

TOPLESS AND TRIUMPHANT MorganMotor Company’s Plus 8 50th Anniversary Special Edition celebrates its final naturally aspirated V-8 Motoring

with a soft top. White brake calipers, yellow towing eyes and ceramic-coated white exhaust tips round out the car’s styling. A Christopher Ward C1 Morgan Plus 8 Chronometer anniversary watch featuring a piece of the original ‘MMC 11’ Plus 8 in the back plate will accompany each vehicle. The car’s good looks go from the signature sliced grille through to the sleek button pop headlights, flared and rounded fenders and past the flat-top hood, and the two-seater boasts specially appointed five-stud wheels finished in a “celebratory champagne color.” While other automobiles slog through traffic, find an open road and enjoy the Plus 8’s unadulterated throttle. Morgan’s engineers created the exhausts to both “amplify and refine the dramatic V-8 soundtrack,” which will cease to exist once this edition sells out. From $152,407, morgan-motor.co.uk

Ponder the simple pleasure of an open- cockpit V-8, when the weather is hot and you can hear the roar of the naturally aspirated engine. Now, picture yourself, top down, with a maximum speed of 155 mph and the superb torsional stiffness of Morgan’s Plus 8 50th Anniversary Special Edition, a flawless getaway car. As the sun sets on a Friday, depart the city and head jauntily into the countryside for a summer weekend away. Morgan’s iconic V-8–powered Plus 8 features a bonded and riveted aluminum chassis and will be the last Morgan vehicle to include the large displacement BMW V-8 engine. Debuted in 1968 at London’s Earls Court Motor Show, this early British roadster became an instant classic, remaining in production for 36 years. To celebrate the Plus 8’s semicentennial, the company is producing 50 numbered Anniversary Edition autos, available in either blue ‘speedster spec’ or British racing green

CANYON CARVER

Vanderhall MotorWorks’ three-wheeled autocycle is vintage for themodern era Cruising the balmy Southern California canyons, windswept and three-wheeled, the Vanderhall Venice radiates a distinct air of cool in a valley of cloudless skies. Part of that may be due to its lack of a roof, but the rest, it can be assured, comes via design. The front tires are open wheeled, while recessed exhaust pipes — so as to avoid calf burns upon entry or exit —peek out from under the vehicle. Through the oval front and tunnel-like tail, each light is masked behind a grille, adding to the classic-racer feel, also evident in the thin, airbag-absent wooden steering wheel. Inspired by the Lotus Seven, the Venice shares the same wheelbase as a Porsche 911 and is assembled start to finish in Provo, Utah. A six-speed automatic transmission and 1.4-liter turbo engine come standard, providing 180 horsepower, enough to climb even the steepest of inclines. Optional Brembo brakes offer some serious stopping ability; from 60 mph in 85ft to be precise. Helmets aren’t required in autocycles, but considering the Venice’s doorlessness and near-ground- tickling height, it wouldn’t be a terrible idea to wear one. Venice’s charm lies in its simplicity: toying with the old-style ball shifter is as complicated as it gets for the driver’s hands. Massive touch screens and air-conditioning aren’t available — they’re just not on brand. A set of black 18in wheels, however, comes standard. Joy is

Low-speed looker Moke America reinvents the doorless beach buggy

The promise of long, languid summer days spent moseying around St Barths or in the Hamptons warrants a vehicle that enables such leisure. With a top speed of 25 mph, the eMoke — the electric version of the classic beach buggy whose fans included Brigitte Bardot, Princess Margaret and Hunter S Thompson — could be just the car. Moke America’s electric four-seater runs for 40 miles on a 12kwh lithium battery that takes eight hours to fully charge and has front-wheel drive. But let’s be honest — owners aren’t investing in this buggy for its 0-to-25 time. A heritage automobile, the Moke was first made by the British Motor Corporation in the 1950s as an attempt at a parachute- droppable vehicle for the British Army, and it looked like a mini Jeep. The car didn’t pass muster with the military, so in 1964, BMC tried selling it to the public. Sadly, production halted a few years later when the company sold fewer than 1,500 vehicles. Resurrected by Todd Rome, founder and president of Blue Star Jets, this ride features plastic seats, ideal for sandy passengers, as well as doorless sides for hop in/hop out ease. A top cover is optional, but we think it is better left in the garage. Nine paint colors and trim lines, including a limited-edition camo print (but excluding the custom tropical wrap inspired by Louis Vuitton Creative Director Kim Jones’s SS18 men’s collection!), are available. More golf cart than automobile, the low-speed eMoke comes in both left- and right-hand drive and has a handy but cozy trunk space, ideal for beach blankets and coolers. Each eMoke is hand-built and made to order over the course of roughly three months. From $16,975, mokeamerica.com
