INSPIRE GOLF COURSES

CAPE KIDNAPPERS GOLF COURSE, North Island, New Zealand

Rugged and magnificent are the best words to describe this remarkable course situated atop 800ft cliffs on the southern tip of Hawke’s Bay. Golf course architect Tom Doak has brilliantly utilized the landscape’s natural ridges and valleys to create fairways full of drama. Want to find out just how high the course is perched above the Pacific? Try hitting over the green at the signature 15th, named Pirates Plank. Your ball will sail for a full 14 seconds before splashing into the ocean below. And while you’re here Sister course Kauri Cliffs, also on North Island, should not be missed. It’s less dramatic than Kidnappers, but still a feast for the eyes. Where to stay The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, a luxury boutique hotel set in a 6,000-acre working sheep and cattle farm with spectacular views of the Pacific. It has its own spa and a restaurant that prides itself on using local produce. Hiking gear, binoculars and even a bird-watching manual are available for those who fancy exploring the stunning local countryside. Best room The standalone Owner’s Cottage, which houses up to eight guests in four deluxe bedrooms, all with private balconies.

MANELE GOLF COURSE, Lanai, Hawaii, US

Carved out of the black lava outcrops of the island of Lanai, west of Maui, this Jack Nicklaus-designed course is one of the most spectacular in the world. There are plunging ravines, towering trees and ocean views from every hole. In the winter months, you may even spot a whale as you play a round. The signature 12th hole offers the challenge of a 200-yard tee shot from the top of a cliff over the crashing waves below. And while you’re here Lanai’s equally impressive Koele course, co-designed by Greg Norman, is due to reopen later this year following a major renovation. Where to stay Four Seasons Resort Lanai, a 90,000-acre resort that has recently undergone a multimillion dollar refurbishment that includes redesigned guest rooms, a renovated spa and a new pro shop on the golf course. It offers exclusive access to the course and a wealth of non-golfing activities, including yacht rental or a chartered helicopter journey over Maui and the Big Island. Best room The Penthouse Prime Ocean Front Suite for its privacy and panoramic views. Price From $4,325 per night fourseasons.com
