Welcome

elitetraveler.com

Anyone else need a vacation right now? Like, desperately? It’s been an interesting challenge putting together this edition of our Hotels, Resorts and Spa Guide, as the hospitality industry has spent the better part (or, if we are being blunt, the worst part) of the year at a standstill. But what we aimed to create among these pages is a wanderlust- inspiring rundown of some of the best places to travel as soon as you are able to — a hit list for you to use to start planning the next few trips. We’ve covered some incredible hotels such as the Hotel Château du Grand-Lucé in France’s Loire Valley,

where you’ll find historic drama and regal intrigue. Some of your old favorites such as the Mandarin Oriental Marrakech, where the Atlas Mountains provide a powerful backdrop for this tranquil oasis in the bustling metropolis. Or Hotel del Colorado — its 130 years of seaside charmmake it perfect for a quintessential American staycation for the whole family. What are hotels going to look like post-pandemic? That’s something that seems at the top of your minds as we all cautiously hope for a world where we can travel once again. Speaking to senior figures in the hotel industry, these measures range from the expected (sanitation increases for staff, guests, and the hotel itself) to the more imaginative (partnerships with transport companies to ensure that getting to their resort is as safe and unexposing as possible). Travel companies are also acutely aware of the feeling of apprehension that surrounds traveling — or anything you’ve been banned from doing for such a long time! So they’re coming up with new and ingenious ways to make you feel a little bit safer. From closed-loop trips where you are in the same, safe pair of hands from the moment you leave your home for the entirety of your journey, with your exposure limited to only those inside your bubble, to resort buyouts that ensure you’re the only group of guests in your hotel of choice. These are trends that will dominate the luxury travel landscape for the foreseeable future. You play an important role in the hospitality sector’s journey to getting back on its feet. Reports show that, though small in number, those that partake in luxury travel vacation more frequently and for longer periods, and spend more while they’re there. So with the new normal being these safety procedures, and the new ingenious options for travel, we urge you to get out there, safely, and help rejuvenate this sector. We want to ensure that the places that give us such pleasure and create such special memories for our families will be able to do so for generations to come.

Elite Traveler ’s Top Suites Database If the Hotels, Resorts and Spas Guide has inspired wanderlust, head online to elitetraveler.com and explore the newly launched Top Suites database. It is the definitive online search tool for finding the best hotel accommodations on the planet. Constantly updated throughout the year, and presented alongside stunning behind-the-scenes images, descriptions and luxury rankings, the database lets you search for your next hotel stay using over 60 different criteria including size,

Fair Lady ’s elegant deck

Yachts by Thea Halstead The rugged beauty of Scotland’s coastline is the ideal cruising ground for naturists and history lovers. And what better way to explore than on board a piece of history itself, the Fair Lady . Built in 1928 at British heritage shipyard Camper & SCOTLAND’S FAIR ISLES Nicholsons, this 121-ft classic yacht cocoons you in her period features. Immerse yourself in a bygone age with formal dinners, a hand of bridge after dinner and not a screen in sight. The owner of Fair Lady explains to us why Scotland holds such a special place in his heart: “Scotland is a vast, varied terrain covered with mountains, lochs, forests, wild beaches and waterfalls. I cruised the west coast and all I had for company was my family, a seal colony, some puffins, dolphins, otters, mink and a multitude of birds. We hiked, we swam in lakes, we had a true adventure — well away from the crowds. I’m delighted that we have brought Fair Lady back to home shores so others can experience Scotland in this way. Remote, beautiful — pure escapism and a place to live out a dream.”

ITINERARY Day 1

Day 7 On your way back to Oban pass through Lochaline, an area of outstanding natural beauty known for its fly fishing. Keen anglers can take their rods ashore and test the water for salmon, trout and sea trout, or if you prefer some underwater exploration, the wrecks of the Sound of Mull are nearby. Day 8 Head back to Oban to disembark and return home on the Spirit of Laudale, a Cessna 208 seaplane. Alternatively, fly across Loch Linnhe to the Laudale estate. The recently refurbished house is an ideal base to continue your Scottish adventure. Try your hand at clay pigeon shooting, archery and sailing before retiring for a dram of whisky by the fire. Charter Fair Lady from £56,000 per week (approx. $72,298). Contact James Clark, head of retail charter, +44 207 766 4300, charter@burgessyachts.com, burgessyachts.com

Board Fair Lady in Oban, a quaint seaside town on Scotland’s west coast. Cruise to the island of Iona and drop anchor to head ashore for a bracing walk to the top of Dùn 1, and to explore white sand beaches and the island’s many historical sites. Day 2 En route to your overnight anchorage at Kentra is Fingal’s Cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa. The sea cave is forged from hexagonally jointed basalt, creating unnerving symmetry for a naturally formed structure. Day 3 From Kentra, hop across to Armadale Castle and gardens on the Isle of Skye. Explore over 40 acres of vibrant woodland gardens and trails against the backdrop of the castle’s romantic ruins. Parts of the gardens date back to the 1790s. Day 4 From Inverie you’ll cross the Sound of Sleat to Loch Scavaig, one of the most dramatic anchorages in Scotland, before heading up to Loch Harport and the Talisker Distillery. Whisky connoisseurs can enjoy an in-depth tour followed by a guided tasting of five expressions of Talisker. Day 5 Eilean Donnan is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Scotland. The 13th-century castle stands guard over Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh, and is home to Jacobean artifacts, period furniture and stunning views. Day 6 From Eilean Donnan travel to the calm waters of Loch Drumbuie, home to an abundance of wildlife. Take advantage of this sheltered spot by jumping in a kayak — try and spot a dolphin or two from the water.

WORLD OF WINE

TAKE TWO// PORT TO STORE, PORT TO POUR

Summer 2020 saw the grand opening of Porto’s World of Wine (WOW), a new cultural destination in the Portugese coastal city perfect for oenophiles and gourmands alike. Located south of the Douro River in warehouses that were once used to store port, WOW has regenerated a historic area that previously lay dormant. Visitors will be able to learn about the history of not only wine, but chocolate, fashion and the city itself. Later this year, the WOWWine School will also open, offering a variety of daily and multi-day workshops on Portuguese wine and gastronomy. Stay in The Yeatman, a luxurious hotel that opened in 2010 and that is widely regarded as the catalyst that started Porto’s tourism boom. It is just a stone’s throw from the WOW development and will soon offer a wealth of new exclusive experiences. After a busy day exploring the delights of WOW, head to The Yeatman’s spa for some wine-inspired treatments; a barrel bath with red wine extract improves blood and lymph circulation. Book the Presidential Suite and enjoy a private tasting on the suite’s

expansive terrace overlooking the WOW and Porto beyond. Presidential Suite from $2,900 per night, wine master class from $240 per person. Contact Jan-Erik Ringertz, general manager, reservations@the-yeatman-hotel.com, +351 220 133 128, the-yeatman-hotel.com

TAYLOR’S VARGELLAS VINHA VELHA 2017 The 2017 growing season was notable for its dryness. This had followed a particularly wet 2016, making for peculiar growing conditions. The crop ripened early and picking started on September 1, the earliest date since 1945. That year was considered one of the greatest vintages of the 20th century, and the rapturous reception for the 2017 appears to show it may follow suit. $300, taylor.pt

Fly between safari camps in an executive-class Cessna Caravan

The flying safari

It’s hardly surprising that, in light of recent events, private travel and exclusive- use accommodations are both in high demand. SkySafari by Elewana specializes in African safaris, traveling between wondrous camps via the company’s nine- seater, executive-class Cessna Caravan. In this classic Kenya itinerary, you can rest assured that touch points are minimal, as you and your party will be the only guests at all camps and on the aircraft. The adventure begins in Nairobi, where you and your posse will spend two nights at Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli. The camp lies in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro and has fantastic views of the imposing mountain. It borders Amboseli National Park which is known for its population of over 1,000 elephants. A stay here has minimal impact on the environment; it is one of the first eco-

lodges of its size, and is proudly 100 percent solar-powered. Fly on to Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp in the 56,000-acre Loisaba Conservancy, which is home to elephants, lions and the rare wild dog. Go stargazing, head out on guided bush walks or a cultural visit to the Samburu villages, or just soak up the astonishing views from the camp’s infinity pools. The final destination is Elewana Sand River Masai Mara, found on the riverbank in the fertile savannah of Masai Mara. The area is home to leopards, cheetahs and lions. The camp consists of exquisite colonial-style tents that reimagine the permanent tented camps of the 1920s. From $60,075 for exclusive use for seven days. Its driving force is time — specifically, how to save this valuable asset by creating aircraft that can have you zipping over to Los Angeles from San Francisco for dinner, and get you back home in time to say goodnight to the kids. It has unveiled a concept for a personal air vehicle (PAV) named Q-Starling. This two-person aircraft combines elements from both fast jets and VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft. It will be powered by a hybrid-electric turbo-generator and will be capable of running on sustainable fuel. CBD explained Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 400 chemical compounds that are found in the cannabis plant. CBD is extracted from hemp because hemp has low levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), i.e., the stuff that gets you high. Humans naturally produce endocannabinoids, which is the equivalent of the cannabidiol that the plants produce. CBD works with the body’s endocannabinoid system, helping to balance and maintain a whole host of bodily functions like memory, mood and pain sensation.

CBD SKIN CARE

It’s one of the most talked-about trending ingredients and has a whole list of supposed benefits: alleviating anxiety, reducing inflammation and chronic pain, and easing insomnia. Now, Cannabidiol (CBD) has entered the skincare market. While topical application won’t have the same effect as when CBD is ingested, it still packs a punch. As CBD is anti-inflammatory, it can be suitable for those with sensitive skin; it is antibacterial so it works for acne-prone skin and can balance sebum production; and it helps to soothe redness from environmental factors and eczema, or after a chemical peel. The most important factor to consider when looking for CBD skin care is how it is extracted — if it is not extracted correctly, you’re left with hemp oil which, while still beneficial for the skin, is not the same thing as CBD. CO2 extraction is thought to be the most gentle and effective way of maintaining the CBD compound. US-based Khus + Khus’s products champion botanicals, and their Fix Face Potion has a whopping 225mg of CBD. MGC Derma uses specially grown hemp and has created its own

trademarked compound called Aquiol, which contains 99% pure CBD and has superior absorption.

THE LIMING BEQUIA ST VINCENT & THE GRENADINES For an absolutely indulgent, do-nothing vacation, head to The Liming in Bequia. The tiny island, pronounced bek-way, is not on most people’s radar, making it one of the best-kept secrets in the Caribbean. Part of St Vincent and the Grenadines, the island measures just seven square miles and has only around 5,000 permanent residents. It has escaped the fate of many islands overrun with tourists and cruise ships, so it offers a taste of idyllic Caribbean life. Time moves slowly in Bequia, making it perfect for a relaxing stay.
