WELCOME THE PRIVATE JET LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
Come on in. As you can see, we’ve had a bit of a tidy up. OK, things have gone a bit further than that. It’s almost an entirely new place. Like many great brands before us, the Elite Traveler team decided it was time to look in the mirror and make a few tweaks. As you can (hopefully) tell, we’ve had fun creating a magazine that remains true to Elite Traveler’s trusted position and heritage, but which is also more in tune with the demands of the modern global private jet traveler. While sticking with many of the readers’ favorite features, including “Top Suites” (Hawaii, in this issue), and plenty of familiar names (Jessica Michault, Elizabeth Doerr) and columns, we’ve introduced new blood, with contributions from the world’s best travel and lifestyle writers and fashion photographers. Features in this relaunch issue cover everything from heliskiing in Iceland, to our 10 favorite private island hotels and an insider’s guide to Shanghai. We believe the end product speaks for itself, but we’d also love to hear from you, so please email us with your comments at editorial@elitetraveler.com.

Zai skis
In its brief history, Zai has carved a reputation as the world’s finest ski maker, primarily through the endeavors of founder Simon Jacomet – a former instructor turned artisan who honed his craft at Völkl and Salomon, before setting up on his own in 2003. His ability to develop innovative, performance- enhancing products, using unconventional materials, is exemplified both in the classic Testa model (polished walnut and stainless steel upper edges) and the new Spada (pictured). The Spada is the world’s first ski to feature a core of 50-million-year-old Swiss Alpine granite. The stone is pre-stressed using carbon fibre to create a composite that has exceptional shock- absorbing properties, affording a smooth-yet-solid ride via a cutting-edge ski that’s also as old as the hills you’re skiing on. $7,045; zai.ch
Zai’s exclusive concierge service allows skiers to “try before they buy” any Zai ski (either for a week, month or even a whole season), with personal delivery anywhere in the Swiss Alps. zai.ch/ski-rental; rental@zai.ch; +41 81 936 44 55

Patek’s World Time watches were first introduced in the 1930s

HOW LEGENDARY BRAND PATEK PHILIPPE HIT THE BIG TIME Complicated love
Patek Philippe’s 175th anniversary is a significant milestone, even for the Swiss watchmaking industry. Founded in 1839, it remains the quintessential haute horology brand, its signature designs highly coveted by collectors. Last November it broke its own auction record for the world’s most expensive watch, when the Henry Graves Supercomplication sold for $24m at Sotheby’s. Patek’s president, Thierry Stern, attributes this success in part to its independence. Being one of the few remaining family owned manufacturers, he says, allows it to continually push new limits when it comes to innovation. To mark its anniversary, Patek has introduced nine commemorative, limited-edition timepieces referencing historic models. While the flagship is the Grandmaster Chime, with 20 complications, gold accents and hand- guilloched center, the white gold World Time Moon represents the course of this unique company’s history. TheWorld Time watches were introduced in the 1930s. This design features a newmovement driving a large-format moon display, and an hour hand for a second time zone. $2.57m, patekphilippe.com

The exposed mechanism of the Franc Vila FV EVOS 18 Cobra is arranged to resemble a skull

BRAND PROFILE/// LOUIS MOINET
Louis Moinet was an 19th-century horologist who invented the chronograph (or compteur de tierces as he called it) in 1815. His legacy and enthusiasm have been revived by Jean-Marie Schaller, founder and creative director of Les Ateliers Louis Moinet in Saint-Blaise, Switzerland. Schaller’s watches are both highly technical and uniquely designed rarities embellished with fragments of meteorites (Qatar Tourbillon), fossilized woods (Geograph Rainforest) and even dinosaur bone (Jurassic Tourbillon). louismoinet.com

With its see-through movement the Richard Mille Tourbillon RM 56-02 takes transparency to new levels
Bare-faced chic Haute watchmakers are showing off their assets like never before. The skeleton trend, where some or all of the watch-face is removed to reveal the beating, bejeweled heart of the timepiece beneath, is back with a vengeance. In truth it has never really gone away, rather the line between what can and cannot be exposed without compromising the horological engineering has grown ever more imperceptible. Take Piaget’s Altiplano Skeleton Enamel 1200E (main picture). Its automatic skeleton movement is not only the world’s thinnest (just 2.4mm) but also the first of its kind to be enameled, all by hand. Or the Richard Mille Tourbillon RM 56-02, which

QATAR TOURBILLON With a beautiful, hand-engraved dial featuring two pieces of the only meteorite ever found in Qatar (Qatar 001), this elegant skeleton complication can genuinely claim to be out of this world. Somewhere between Mars and Jupiter, to be precise. Price: POA
takes the concept to levels of genuine transparency. With its sapphire crystal components fed by a braided steel cable with a diameter of just 0.35mm, the see-through movement appears to float unsupported over the wrist. The Franc Vila FV EVOS 18 Cobra interprets skeletonization in a different light, with its exposed mechanism arranged in an inverted figure of eight that subtly resembles a skull. Meanwhile in Claude Meylan’s Lac collection, it is the framework rather than the movement that takes center stage, the intricate structure stripped down, hand painted and then reassembled with dramatic results. piaget.com, richardmille.com, francvila.com, claudemeylan.ch

SPIRIT OF THE TORNADO The Venom F5 is the latest jaw-dropper from Texan supercar firm Hennessey. The replacement for the GT, it hits the roads later this year and takes its name from the top of the scale used to measure tornados. With everything shaped to reduce drag and a kerb weight of just 1,300kg, the F5 will, in theory, hit 290mph and beat the GT’s 0-200mph time. While the F5 will shine on a track, there’s also a single clutch paddle-shift transmission and GPS-based traction control that Hennessey partner Don Goldman says will make it “easier and more satisfying to drive, day in and day out.” venomgt.com/venom-f5/

The latest Range Rover shooting star
This tie-up between high-end British gunsmiths Holland & Holland and Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations is a definite hit. Only 40 of the $280,000 special edition Range Rovers will be built each year. Based on the top-of-the-range, long-wheelbase Autobiography Black model, the vehicle makes use of the extra leg room, with two individual seats in the rear that recline to 17 degrees, and an extended centre console with integrated USB sockets and bespoke lighting. Passengers can luxuriate regardless of where they go, thanks to Range Rover’s new All-Terrain Progress Control, which improves its already impressive off-road handling, performance and efficiency. Under the hood, there’s a choice of a 335bhp, 4.4-litre SDV8 diesel or a 503bhp, 5-litre supercharged petrol V8. This is a car built for comfort. The interior is upholstered with soft tan and espresso leather, with sustainable French walnut veneer (cut from a single piece) polished to resemble Holland & Holland’s gunstock, while the brand’s acanthus scroll is engraved into internal door handles. But it’s in the boot that the real fun begins. A stunning removable leather-trimmed aluminium loadspace cabinet, complete with the Holland & Holland logo, can transport a pair of guns. Beautifully crafted from aluminium and carbon fibre, finished with leather and wood veneer, the sliding floor is load-bearing and can be sat on to change into wellies or enjoy a picnic. landrover.com

Men’s style
Kind of blue
Men’s style trends fall into two categories: those that inspire you for the months ahead – either selectively or wholeheartedly – and those you’d rather forget. While we won’t try to second guess your stance on this season’s penchant for bright orange outerwear and patterned silk trousers, one quietly pervading theme between now and autumn is a color more closely associated with the streets of Mayfair than the runways of Milan. Blue, in all its subtle variations, is back, and the only “rule” is to pick a shade – light or dark, or somewhere in between – and run with it. This season’s collections exemplify its versatility across the style spectrum, none more so than Louis Vuitton, where designer Kim Jones’s denim- hued, double-breasted suits with leather-embossed buttons contrast sharply with the relaxed-yet-elegant navy flannel silhouettes of the maison’s newly-established Formal Collection. Elsewhere, Berluti’s Alessandro Sartori has used origami-inspired materials to fashion what he calls sports couture, with lightweight, blue-grey knitted cotton jackets and at Dunhill, the theme is escape. Plan yours in a blue linen peak-lapel suit tailored with the traveling man in mind.

ITALIAN FINE TAILORING FRAGRANCES AND WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT YOUR STYLE
Matching a scent to what you are wearing should be considered an essential part of dressing. If your ensemble is casual, try something fresh – it gives an air of being carefree, but still put together. If the look is black tie, try something a little more seductive – edgy, but still elegant.

THE ENDORSEMENT: TROUBADOUR CARD HOLDER Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho did a lot to elevate the quality of business cards, but where to store one’s watermarked, off-white cards is less clear. An Italian tailoring institution renowned for its su misura (custom- made) suiting, Brioni was one of the first menswear houses to launch a fragrance – an eau de cologne – in 1959. While its fellow tailors have released scores of scents over the years, Brioni has kept to tailoring until now, releasing only a limited- edition scent in 2009. Its second standalone release is an eponymous eau de toilette that manifests the label’s classical masculine elegance via a blend of citrus, florals and wood. “When a man wears a custom Brioni
suit, he exudes a sexiness because he feels confident and protected,” reasons the company’s creative director, Brendan Mullane. “We wanted to bottle that feeling with a sensual and elegant scent.” Perfumer Raymond Matts has achieved this duality of the hedonic and the refined via three distinctive notes: the first is a sparkling, cold- pressed Sicilian lemon; the second, a sharply floral composition of magnolia, iris and violet; the third is charged with an intense amalgam of saffron, oud and liquorice, which gives the whole its unequivocal esprit and panache. $340, brioni.com

Women’s style
Masters of understatement Bottega Veneta’s S/S 2015 collection
Less is more
To many followers of fashion, the chicest designer labels at the moment whisper instead of scream. Designers such as Joseph Altuzarra, Anthony Vaccarello, and Tomas Maier are creating clothing that is quietly luxurious, focusing on beautifully fluid fabrics in (updated) classic silhouettes. Dubbed by some as “stealth wealth” fashion, these easy-to-wear pieces elicit an insiders’ nod of recognition instead of explicitly boasting brand affiliations and the corresponding price tag. “It’s a style that comes through in not overdoing it – that’s the soul of it,” observes Sasha Sarokin, buying manager for Net-A-Porter. “It’s an effortlessness, an understatedness. A woman can look chic in this style as opposed to wearing statement pieces.” The influential website is carrying Vaccarello for the first time this spring, and is feeling confident about Maier’s mix for resort and spring collection of button-downs and breezy skirts and dresses. There is a versatility to these clothes, which often come in neutral colors such as tan, dark brown, and navy. They’re easy to add personal touches to – with a handbag or shoes, two categories where recognizable logos still prevail, even in the small letter imprint of a word such as “Celine” or “Hermes”. “We want fashion to support our lifestyle, not be another task,” explains Sarokin. “It’s a need for a versatile, high quality, functional wardrobe to support our lives, not for our lives to be the purpose of wearing more wild pieces.” While the trend feels new, its worth noting that Tomas Maier, one of its key designers, is also the creative director of the brand that epitomizes stealth wealth: Bottega Veneta, whose label-free woven leather bags are synonymous with understated, but unquestionably, luxurious elegance. altuzarra.com; anthonyvaccarello.com; tomasmaier.com; net-a-porter.com; bottegaveneta.com

TIMELESS SIGNATURE
“My main inspiration was the ‘rouge à l’or’ technique, exclusive to Baccarat, and the art of red crystal making,” explains perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, who created the scent. “The idea was to create the olfactive signature of Baccarat.” The fragrance’s name also comes from a Baccarat signature. It is a nod to the temperature at which the company’s deep crimson crystals are produced: 540 degrees Celsius. uk.baccarat.com
Baccarat’s newest creation, introduced in honor of the French luxury brand’s 250th anniversary, is focused around more than just hand-blown crystal. It is, instead, a unisex fragrance called Rouge 540, complex and ambery, but also wearably light with hints of fruit. Available in a numbered, limited edition of 250 (and priced at $4,000 for 100ml), it comes in a sleekly-faceted, diamond-cut crystal bottle.

Loquet London
Sheherazade Goldsmith’s inspiration for her line of transparent, customizable gold lockets came from an inexpensive perspex necklace, bought at an amusement park by her then nine-year-old son. “I wore it all the time and thought, ‘wouldn’t it be nice to open it and put something inside’,” she says. So, with some creative input from her friend Laura Bailey, a British model and contributing editor at Vogue , Goldsmith created Loquet London: delicate, see-through lockets filled with a choice of hand- crafted gold trinkets — such as diamond-set initials and good luck charms. Bespoke inserts — such as the tiny gold surfboard one client requested — are also popular. “The idea behind the jewelry is that people create their own pieces,” she says. “It’s nice to hear people’s stories about what they want to put inside.” loquetlondon.com

director at Neiman Marcus. “This jewelry makes the most classic look more modern.” Brands doing precious versions of this include Yeprem and Borgioni; there are more directional options in lines such as Noor Fares, Ippolita, Anita Ko and Phyne by Paige Novick (above). The look has also been acknowledged by more traditional jewelers, such as Leviev, and Tiffany and Co, with its bold, but classic Schlumberger studs. “Some are sophisticated, some more edgy,” says Pimental. “There’s an elegance and modernity to them. There’s something to suit everyone.”
The biggest trend in earrings right now is large statement studs, typically detailed with precious gems. They are the antithesis of, say, a classic pair of cultured pearls mounted onto a platinum post. The look is inspired by the popularity of ear cuffs: branches of stones on a stud back that curl up and around the ear. Ear jackets are also popular: a bejeweled piece that sits underneath the earlobe. Many women wear these as single earrings instead of pairs – making the look less formal. “It’s in right now: it’s what we’re seeing on celebrities,” says Ana Maria Pimentel, accessories

Light entertainer Until now the pinnacle of home cinema hardware has been the digital light processing (DLP) projector, a device capable of recreating the super-screen awe of the multiplex in the comfort of your living room. But this approach is not without drawbacks: the units are frequently cumbersome, noisy and tricky to install inconspicuously, even in dedicated screening rooms. Sony’s alternative is the epitome of discretion. Resembling a low-rise storage solution Dieter Rams might have conceived, the 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector fits against the wall and uses a laser light source to project ultra-high-definition content directly onto it, with a display size of up to 147 inches. A gesture-control interface has already been live-tested to showcase its broader potential, such as the ability to scroll through virtual, life-sized facsimiles of the Louvre Museum’s canvasses, simply by swiping a finger through the air. $50,000, sony.net

Here, Kitty The new private jet terminal at St Kitts looks set for an increase in traffic as high-end developments on the glamorous Caribbean island reach completion. First off the starting line is Belle Mont Farm, which opened on December 12th last year. A high-end interpretation of a rustic farmstay, guests staying in colonial-style villas with views to the Atlantic are encouraged to live the simple life, dining on the farm’s organic food or watching a film on their villa’s personal cinema screen. It’s part of the ambitious Kittitian Hill development, a real-estate, golf and leisure development with its own air strip and a laudable sustainable ethos. Later this year, on the other side of the island, a Park Hyatt will open as part of the exclusive Christophe Harbour development.
