Pierogi (or varenyky) are dumplings common to the eastern Euro pean culinary traditions of the immigrant groups common to northwest Chicago. Cheese and potato “ruskie pierogi” are a comforting dish for a cold and windy day. Be sure to try some at rustic Podhalanka (1549 W. Division St., Chicago) which serves traditional Polish cuisine. The varenyky at Tryzub Ukrainian Kitchen (2201 W. Chicago Ave., Chicago) are a modern take on the dish and come in a rainbow of colors to try. Frozen pierogi from Alexandra’s Pierogi or from Kasia’s Pierogi are a great way to bring this taste of Chicago home. PERFORMING ARTS A Chicago Jazz Gem: The Green Mill Nikki Marcotte, YLS Journal Editor; Kirkland & Ellis Nestled near the corner of Broadway and Lawrence in Chicago’s northern Uptown neighborhood is one of the city’s oldest and most iconic jazz bars. The Green Mill is not only well known for its rich jazz traditions—in its heyday, attracting famous acts such

as Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday—but it is also steeped in Chicago mob legend. During Prohibition, this unassuming bar served as a speakeasy and gangster hangout for the likes of Al Capone and Jack “Machine Gun” McGurn. If you go, be sure to ask about Capone’s favorite spot or the trapdoor behind the bar that once connected to a tunnel running underneath the estab lishment, which served as an escape route for mobsters and as a way to smuggle illicit liquor into the nightclub. Today, you can hear live Chicago-style jazz and enjoy an incredible cocktail (I’m partial to the Mill’s extra dirty vodka martini). But be warned: it’s a cash-only establishment! Greenmilljazz.com iO Theater and Second City Theater, both located in Old Town, are the two preeminent comedy theaters in the country. Since 1959, Second City has been a mainstay of improvisational and sketch comedy. Since 1989, iO has been the pinnacle of “long form” improvisational comedy, in which a single word from the audience launches a three-act, improvised play.
