This motto, found on the State of Michigan Great Seal, was adopted in 1835, just two years before the Upper Peninsula was added to the state of Michigan. Maybe it should be adjusted to read, “If you seek pleasant peninsulas, look about you.” For 106 years, the West Michigan Tourist Association has highlighted the very best of our state. We represent both peninsulas, with a liberal definition of “west” to include the area from the Indiana border, up US-127 to I-75, and including the Upper Peninsula, to form what we have promoted as “West Michigan.” From Warren Dunes State Park in Southwest Michigan to the Great Porcupine Mountains in the western end of the U.P., Michigan has wilderness galore with more than five national parks, 104 state parks, and 136 state forest campgrounds to explore. West Michigan is also home to world-class urban destinations that feature incredible museums, attractions, and spectacular events. And oh!, the history you will see, in beach towns that were once thriving lumber towns, and old mining communities that offer unique recreation opportunities. Small towns each have their own unique culture, flavor, and atmosphere. You’ll find many businesses that are special and intimate and uniquely original; cool coffee shops, quaint bookstores, outfitters stocked and ready, and breweries, distilleries, and restaurants all waiting to serve you the best of what they have to offer.

A great way to explore a small town is to get insight from local residents! Pick a place, then visit, call, or check out the website of their local Chamber of Commerce or Visitors Center for a wealth of information and recommendations on what to do and see in the area. The staff will be happy to help you with suggestions that will make your trip all that it can be. Be sure to note the hours and dates for any attractions you are wanting to visit, and check for any special events, festivals, fairs, or parades that may be happening during the year. West Michigan is filled with many small town wonders – something for everyone and every season. Keep reading to learn about a few charming destinations that we’d recommend exploring. SOUTH: HARBOR COUNTRY Those looking to explore local small towns should be sure to check out Harbor Country, an eclectic collection of eight small towns in southwest Michigan. Nestled among sandy beaches and beautiful orchards and vineyards, these communities are a great place to enjoy the natural beauty of the Lake Michigan shoreline region. You’ll find vibrant art galleries in Union Pier, Harbert, and Three Oaks, and fantastic beaches in New Buffalo, Grand Beach, and Sawyer. Lakeside features several community events during the year, and Michiana is home to a number of charming cottage neighborhoods – perfect for a relaxing getaway. CENTRAL: LOWELL Just a 20-minute drive from Grand Rapids, you’ll find the small town of Lowell, featuring historic buildings, covered bridges, unique shopping, and antiques.

Lowell is located right where the Flat River and Grand River meet, offering scenic opportunities for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. This charming small town also features a variety of festivals and events throughout the year, including the Showboat Sizzlin’ Summer Concert Series, the Fallasburg Art Festival, and Christmas Through Lowell celebration. NORTH: LUDINGTON Reminiscent of Norman Rockwell’s small town Americana depictions, Ludington could surely qualify. Near the long stretches of sugar-sand beaches, the flower-lined

U.P.: KEWEENAW PENINSULA The U.P. towns of Houghton,

Hancock, and Copper Harbor can be found in this remote, breathtakingly beautiful area. This is the place for exploring your inner mindfulness and the rugged shores and unspoiled beauty of Lake Superior and Lake of the Clouds. To say that fall color here is spectacular is quite the understatement. Tour a copper mine, hike the abundant trails, view some waterfalls, jump on an ATV or a mountain bike, and then when you’re hungry, be sure to sample some local smoked trout or whitefish, and don’t forget the local favorite, a miner’s pasty.

Sip and Stroll Three years ago, Michigan legislation allowed for the establishment of “Social Districts” which permit the sale of alcoholic beverages (cocktails to-go) from licensed establishments in approved (and often logoed) containers to customers for consumption within defined areas – like designated seating spaces, parking lots, parks, or even sidewalks. Currently, more than 100 communities operate Social Districts

What started as a solution to social distancing required in the early days of the pandemic has continued as a way for bars, restaurants, breweries, wineries, and distilleries to maintain and grow their consumer base. There is hope that this temporary solution will soon become a permanent offering statewide. Grand Rapids leads the state with more than 60 participating businesses making up nine dedicated districts including Downtown, Creston, East Fulton, East Hills, Fourth & Stocking, Michigan Street, Wealthy Street, West Fulton, and West Leonard. Throughout the county, six additional communities also have approved refreshment zones (Ada, Cedar Springs, Grandville, Lowell, Rockford, and Sparta). Social Districts aren’t reserved for big cities – check out some of the other communities taking advantage of this new business tool.

Nature is amazing and so is fall in West Michigan. As our days grow colder and shorter, and the bright rays of summer’s sun start to dim, nature puts on a terrific display of reds, oranges, browns, and yellows. This is the time to drive, bike, hike, and paddle to see the vibrant colors on display. Each vista is uniquely different with the rolling road, the leaf-strewn valley, the tranquil lake reflecting, like a glassy mirror, a panoramic image of spectacularly painted forests. Let the tours begin!

Want to beat the rush? Then venture north and make the Keweenaw Peninsula your very first stop. It’s colder here, so this is where the show begins. Drive, hike, or ride the chairlift up Brockway Mountain for the most amazing views of blazing forests and Lake Superior. M-26 is a must see, as is the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse. Venture south across the Mackinac bridge and find colorful routes through Harbor Springs, Alanson, Petoskey, Boyne City, and Boyne Falls. Try C-81 for a north-south route running from just east of Harbor Springs, north to Mackinaw City. Another favorite is the

C-77 which begins in Harbor Springs and goes north to Cross Village. Be sure to grab a bite at the legendary Leg’s Inn. The famous M-22 runs along the lakeshore from Manistee to Leland. Along with breathtaking views along the water, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, intriguing small towns, wineries, shops, and galleries will offer you lots to see and do on your tour. Muskegon and White Lake have created a fantastic driving or biking tour to witness all the fall colors. The route stretches from the Muskegon South Pierhead Light to the White River Light

Station, allowing you to witness vibrant colors through woods, dunes, and water.
