The museum has everything: from a Boeing 727 you can sit in, to a German submarine you can walk through. There is also a chicken hatchery, a coal mine, and Colleen Moore’s famous doll house. Not to mention used spaceships and classic trains. Around the back and across the lagoon to the south stands the Clarence Darrow Bridge, at the north end of Jackson Park, where renowned landscaper Frederick Law Olmsted worked his landscape magic for the Fair. Every March 13, the date of Darrow’s death in 1938, lawyers and their friends visit the bridge, because Darrow said that if there was an afterlife, he’d send a sign there. So far, no sign. TOURS AND NEIGHBORHOODS Aside from the famous double-decker bus tours, some lesser known ones that get rave reviews are the Chicago Crime Tour that takes passengers throughout the city to see where “the Mob” conducted its business decades ago. The route includes the Cook County Criminal Courthouse, as well as a stop at the Biograph Theater, the site of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre where the country’s most wanted criminal, John Dillinger, was shot down in 1934. The Gangsters and Ghosts Walking Tour takes you back to the Roaring ‘20s when the Chicago Loop was a hub for bootleggers, speakeasies, and Al Capone. gangstersandghosts.com Another fun tour is the two-hour guided downtown walk that visits sites from movies and TV, including Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Untouchables, The Dark Knight, The Bear, The Blues Brothers , Get out into the neighborhoods! As we say in Chicago, we’re a city of 77 neighborhoods, and you can’t get a full understand ing of how amazing this city is just from the Loop. Some of the city’s best restaurants are in Logan Square, Avondale, Pilsen, and Hyde Park. Everyone knows about the museums downtown, but there are some very cool ones not that far away, including the National Museum of Mexican Art and the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures.
