This year is my 22nd year in education and my third school year in Bridge City ISD. I am excited about the opportunities we will have over the next several years to build programs and facilities to meet the growth of our district and the needs of our students. Bridge City ISD is an innovative educational system within a family-oriented community with a small town atmosphere. As a school district, we pride ourselves on creating a family environment for our students and staff. We are passionate about student success and it is my hope that our commitment to students is evident in all we do. We provide an excellent academic and extracurricular environment that demands our students work hard to become the best they can be. We are investing a great deal in technology, career and technical education (CTE), and other resources to help ensure your child has an opportunity to reach their fullest potential. While we take pride in quality education and individualized educational opportunities, Bridge City ISD offers a variety of activities and educational programs to enhance the overall educational experience. IT’S A GREAT DAY! My name is Lindy Welborn, and I am the CTE and Secondary Curriculum Coordinator for Bridge City ISD. This is my 16th year in education and my fourth year in Bridge City ISD. I transitioned during the 2022-2023 school year from an Assistant Principal to my current position and I am excited to see how I can serve Bridge City ISD in this new role. In my Career and Technical Education (CTE) role, my goals are to continue improving and developing our current programs of study and promote CTE to our Bridge City community. Due to the size of our district, we are required by the state of Texas to have two programs of study in place. I am proud to report that Bridge City ISD currently offers 20 programs of study to our students. Our partnership with Lamar State College-Orange is instrumental in our expanded student offerings and we will continue working cohesively with them to be able to provide the best to our students. CTE courses are not something that ’s just limited to BCHS. I am pleased to say that we are making some CTE courses available at the Middle School level and hope to continue adding more in the future. In addition to all the other exciting things going on, we have taken on the project of building a STEM bus from the ground up. This project is actively in the works, and I am hopeful it will be unveiled in May of 2023. Fingers crossed with lots of work from our students and staff along with the financial support of our community and this dream is quickly becoming a reality. It ’s exciting times in the CTE world as we watch the much-needed CTE facilities start taking shape. Our CTE teachers have been part of the design process and we can’t wait to see their plans come to fruition. Follow our CTE Facebook page to keep up with our classes and building progress. It ’s a great day to be a Cardinal! Thanks Again, Lindy Welborn

THE BRIDGE CITY CARDINAL SINGERS ARE A TESTAMENT TO PERSEVERANCE. In a recent history marked by ever-changing leadership, as well as a pandemic which put a hold on the act of singing together, the Cardinal Singers stood their ground. Now, under the direction of Kate Colby, they are returning full-force; the program is projected to nearly double in size in the next couple years, creating a stronger, more competitive ensemble representing the district. Although their numbers are small now, that hasn’ t stopped them from being represented at the state level. In the 21-22 school year, alto Liliana Mendoza competed at the TMEA Area auditions, and soprano Presley Faulkner scored a Superior ranking at Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest. In the future, Mrs. Colby hopes to build multiple thriving ensembles. She invites everyone, no matter their experience or skill level, to be a part of this exciting and growing program. Bridge City’s fundamental strengths will be paramount to its success, which coach Robertson has adamantly encouraged his team to tap into. “We’re pretty balanced as far as scoring goes,” Robertson said. “We can shoot the ball really well from the outside. So, on any given night, we can score plenty of points and beat anybody. On the same note, we can also lose to anybody if we don’ t come ready to play. They [the team] are really buying into the defensive end of things now.” The postseason will be here before you know it and Robertson and Bridge City will certainly be anticipating an appearance.
BRIDGE CITY BOYS HOOP TROUP IS BACK FOR ANOTHER ENTERTAINING FINALE TO THE WINTER SEASON ON THE HARDWOOD. Led by coach Randall Robertson, the Cardinals are looking to make some noise in a tough Class 4A Region III. “We want to continue to get better, one game at a time,” said Robertson. “We want to earn a good district placement by the end of the regular season. After that, we’ll be ready for the playoffs.” Headlining the Cardinals are several key playmakers, including senior guard Walker Britten, who has shown to be a proficient sharpshooter. Sophomore forward Bryce Linder is a versatile piece, while junior Lincoln Breaux has become a leader with a knack for making plays in the paint.

AS THE WINTER SEASON OF HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS IS COMING TO A CLOSE, BRIDGE CITY GIRLS BASKETBALL IS DETERMINED TO FINISH STRONG WHILE DONNING THE RED AND WHITE. Directing the Lady Cards is coach Larry Sterling, who shows confidence in his team’s improvement from last year. While in a competitive district, Bridge City will be hoping to claim a ticket to the UIL 4A postseason. “Our expectation is to make the playoffs,” said Sterling. “Every year, we come into the season with that mindset. Hopefully, we’ll continue to get better both individually and as a unit as we continue to grow and mature.” Leading the Cardinals on the hardwood is forward Rylynn Thornton, who has made her presence knows on the inside, while sophomore guard Whitney Cunningham provided a ton of energy for Bridge City. According to Sterling, the team’s main asset lies in its numbers. “I believe our strength is our depth, we have a

“Southeast Texas baseball is loaded with talent,” said Landry. “There are no ‘cupcakes’ on the schedule. It ’s going to be a battle every night, which gets us ready for the playoffs. AFTER AN IMPRESSIVE 18-8 REGULAR SEASON IN 2022, WHICH LED TO A PLAYOFF BERTH, THE CARDS ARE PREPPED TO RUN IT BACK THIS SPRING. With 12 seniors returning, expectations are high for Bridge City on the diamond. Coach Chad Landry believes his team's strengths will carry them to a stellar season. “We got a lot of [pitching] arms on the mound,” said Landry. “Our defense is going to be very solid. We’ve got some guys who can run and move well, so we can score some runs for them. It ’s going to be a fun year.” Despite falling to Hargrave (2-1 split) in the first round in 2022, Bridge City has their eyes set on a bigger prize. “Some of our headliners include Justin Abate behind the plate,” Landry said. “He [Abate] is kind of our ‘quarterback’ back there. He’s our leader. Our defense is pretty loaded with three or four multi-year starters out there — [Brice]

Second baseman Makenna Carey plays really well at middle-infield and Marlie Strong is my shortstop, who hits well and produces for us. We have so much to work with.” While softball holds a special place in the hearts of Harris and her team, she also intends to instill other attributes in her team. “The big thing that I preach to these kids is to be kind,” said Harris. “Softball — the winning, the losing — it ’s all part of it. But, the most important thing for me, is the relationships that the kids are building. That ’s an important aspect to understand. Be a good teammate. Be a good person. Show up for your school, your program, your friends and your family.” With that as their cornerstone, how can they lose?
“Our pitcher [Carson Fall] is probably the best in the state of Texas,” said Harris. “I know that ’s a bold statement, but this kid is just phenomenal. Last year, we really figured out how to produce runs behind her, which helped. I’ve got my first baseman Brooklyn Droddy back, who can swing the bat really well and brings a lot of energy. Show up for your school, your program, your friends and your family.
BRIDGE CITY SOFTBALL IS LEGIT. Following last year ’s dominant season in which the Cardinals were undefeated district champs, there is no reason why a repeat isn’ t in order. Throw in the fact that the majority of the previous roster remains, Bridge City is a Regional favorite. “My expectations for our team are to get back to Regionals and go further,” said coach Raven Harris. “I’ve got a big group that ’s returning...a lot of talent. So, I think we’ve got a good shot to make a deep run this year.” After falling to defending State Champ Liberty (2-1 split) in the Regional Quarters, Bridge City will be more determined than ever to push for a State Title. With the Cardinals’ talent, it ’s not out of the question.

FOLLOWING LAST SEASON’S FIFTH CONSECUTIVE DISTRICT TITLE, BRIDGE CITY GIRLS’ TRACK IS ANTICIPATING TO CONTINUE THEIR DOMINANCE. Head coach Jamie DeShazo has high expectations for her team, as they have been preparing for months. “Our goal every year that we set as a team is to win a District Championship,” said DeShazo. “We know that track can be viewed as an individual sport, but we like to see what we can do together as a team. The athletes buy in and will do what is best for the team.” DeShazo will look to her seniors – Audry LeLeaux, Morgan Louvier, Amaris Larkin and Gracelon Freeman – to lead her team to success. “We have some returning athletes that we’re excited to have coming back this season,” DeShazo said. “Audry [LeLeaux] is an athlete every coach wants on their team. They are hungry for success. “I’m excited to see these guys come together and compete,” said Landry. “They have been working hard with the 6:30 am practices, lifting weights regularly and are always willing to come to work. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR WILL MAKE. Bridge City soccer took their lumps last season with a young team, so its best soccer is in front of them. Cardinals coach Michael Landry has high expectations for his team, which will be headlined by sophomore Jagger Carlin and senior GK Sebastian Sandino on defense, and sophomore midfielder Austin Bellanger and the team’s leading goal-scorer sophomore forward Nate Stafford. “Last year was a rebuilding year for Cardinal soccer,” said Landry. “We started seven freshmen at one point. Considering that last season didn’t quite meet expectations, Basco and her team have been working through the offseason to turn things around.
“We’ve been focusing on keeping heavy possession, using the midfield players and outside defenders as we progress up the field,” Basco said. “I’ve been pressing for the girls to put themselves in a goal-scoring opportunity to increase their chances of taking a shot.” With the season already underway, Basco is ready to see what her girls can do. “I’m most excited to see how this season plays out,” said Basco. “A large piece of my team is made up of juniors who have been playing with each other for years. I’ve been waiting for this group to grow to a higher level. So far, I think they have reached that point.”
SOCCER SEASON IS BACK FOR BRIDGE CITY AND THE GIRLS’ TEAM SEEKS TO BUILD UPON WHAT THEY LEARNED LAST YEAR. The Cardinals will be led by senior forward Leslie Carranza, the team’s leading scorer who averaged two goals per game. With Carranza at the front, coach Cori Basco has high hopes for her roster and believes that this is the year they begin to advance their goals. “My expectations this season are to have us move up to a higher district rank,” said Basco. “Also, I would like the girls to continue playing together outside of school. Leslie [Carranza] has been a big standout for us on the attack. I’m hoping we can extend her senior year past the regular season.”

COSME TOLOGY
feature
THE COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM AT BRIDGE CITY HIGH SCHOOL IS RUN BY MRS. JESSICA JONES. Mrs. Jones has 19 years of industry experience that she brings to our students and is constantly refreshing her skills so our students are learning the most cutting edge techniques available. Cosmetology is a 3 year endorsement program that starts in students’ Sophomore year with Intro to Cosmetology. This program, in its entirety, will help students learn not only skills needed to build a clientele but also sanitation and safety precautions to ensure they can protect themselves in a workplace. This year Cosmetology Students are also earning dual credit through Lamar State College Orange. This provides students with 1 year of business school experience when they leave high school in addition to the Cosmetology certification received if requirements are completed. Bridge City Cosmetology offers many services to the students and community twice a week with services ranging from a simple blowdry and style to color services and textures services. They also offer nail services and men’s haircuts. Graduates from Bridge City Cosmetology have become successful cosmetologists and salon owners in the surrounding areas with a strong clientele base and a continual growing business. BRIDGE CITY HIGH SCHOOL IS FORTUNATE TO HAVE TWO INSTRUCTORS FOR THEIR HEALTH SCIENCE PROGRAM. Sara Tahany, RN is the instructor for our Introduction to Health Science classes as well as the Medical Terminology classes. These typically fall during freshman and sophomore year consecutively. Robin Peveto, RN is the instructor for the junior class, Health Science Theory, as well as the senior class, Practicum in Health Science (CNA class/dual credit). The CNA class is a dual credit class, the students learn all the skills of a certified nurse’s aide during the first part of the program, then the students have a clinical rotation at the nursing home where they put their skills to use, caring for the elderly. We also have a clinical rotation at a local hospital and the students become familiar with the day to day life of a nurse. These CNA students take a State Test at the end of the school year, which can allow them to become a Certified Nurse’s Aide. BCHS has produced 230 CNA’s over the past 18 years, these students frequently go on to nursing school. This program not only benefits our students, but our community. ROBOT I C S
feature
BRIDGE CITY HIGH SCHOOL HAS INTRODUCED A ROBOTICS PROGRAM INTO THEIR CURRICULUM THAT IS INSTRUCTED BY MR. TOM NICHOLS. In his Principles of Engineering course students learn about basic functions of sensors for the robots and how to make them function properly using their own design for attachments. Students who take his Manufacturing of Engineering course will be able to step up to bigger, more complicated robots to do tasks. These robots are in-line with Lamar University’s Robotic program. With the introduction of this new program at Bridge City High is a UIL Robotics competition team that is put on by FIRST and sponsored by fortune 500 companies. Students who join this team could have the possibility to go all the way up to a World competition to show off their ingenuity. This Team is student run and lets them really show off their skills from: being able to work with a team to build, code, journal, community involvement and so much more. All of those things help prepare our problem solvers of tomorrow. Robotics; Solving Tomorrow’s Problems THE FUTURE IS NOW \\ By L indy Welborn
