Roots
Holland is an increasingly diverse city which welcomes new residents from across the globe. Today’s immigrants come because they know Holland is a place to find a meaningful community, raise a healthy family, and enjoy a vibrant retirement.

The Anishnaabek
Dutch Settlement
For thousands of years before French fur traders paddled into Michigan’s waterways in the 1600s, this land was home to the Odawa, Chippewa, and Potawatomi - together known as the Anishnaabek. Many direct descendants of the Anishnaabek still live in West Michigan today, and their legacy endures in local place names like Ottawa County, Lake Macatawa, Black River, and Waukazoo Woods.
In 1846, a ship of Dutch dreamers set sail across the Atlantic, destined for a new life in the “Holland Kolonie.” A year later, another group from the Netherlands founded the Zeeland colony nearby. The newcomers were welcomed by the Odawa, who shared the wilderness skills they needed to survive. Daily life for the settlers was hard, but they persevered, building shops, homes, and industry from dense forests. By the 1860s, Holland was a bustling agricultural port and housed an institution that would become Hope College. On October 8, 1871 - the same day the Great Chicago Fire began - a blaze left nearly the entire town in ruins. With help from neighbors like Zeeland, Holland rose from the ashes and flourished once more.

HISTORY + HERITAGE
20th Century
As the century unfolded, the Holland area became known for furniture makers and businesses like Holland Furnace Company, Chris-Craft, and Heinz Pickle Factory. After World War I, tourism boomed, and visitors filled ornate resorts (later replaced by family cottages). Tulip Time was born in 1929, eventually growing into one of America’s most celebrated flower festivals. Following World War II, Hope College’s enrollment more than doubled, and the school expanded both its campus and academics to create the influential liberal arts college it is today. As late as the 1950s, nine out of ten Holland residents still traced their roots to Dutch heritage, but the community was changing. Hispanic migrant farm workers arrived in the 1940s, and Vietnam War refugees traveled halfway around the world to begin new lives here. In the decades since, the Holland area has grown, welcoming new industries and residents alike. A variety of industries thrive in the Holland area, with new ones regularly emerging. Gentex, Magna, and LG Energy Solutions are leaders in automotive manufacturing, while Haworth, Tiara Yachts, and Boar’s Head are top names in furniture, luxury boats, and food processing. In the 21st century, the Holland area continues to attract immigrants from across the globe. Like those before them, these new residents bring traditions, skills, and hopes - enriching the multifaceted fabric of the community. Holland Today

Tulip Time Festival
May 1-10, 2026
Each spring, millions of tulips burst into bloom across Holland, marking the arrival of Tulip Time, the world’s longest-running tulip festival. What began in 1929 as a simple floral tribute to Dutch heritage has blossomed into a 10-day celebration filled with lively parades, nightly entertainment, and the joyful wooden shoe klomping of our famous Dutch Dancers. In 2026, discover Dutch Life on Display , a rare presentation of authentic 1800s Dutch garments showcased inside the historic Van Raalte Farmhouse. Returning festival favorites include the Tulip Immersion Garden and motorcoach VIP tours, along with the annual carnival and dazzling waterfront fireworks finale. Evening entertainment includes Love Story: A Tribute to Taylor Swift, Elton Rohn, The Texas Tenors, and Michael Carbonaro, the renowned comic magician. From miles of tulip-lined streets to timeless traditions and world-class performances, Tulip Time offers an experience as unforgettable as the blooms themselves.

Holidays in Holland
Journey back to a time of festive wonder, where twinkling trees and evergreen boughs set a heartwarming winter scene. Picture the Holiday Open House with roasting chestnuts and strolling carolers, Santa arriving in a dazzling Parade of Lights, and a towering Dutch windmill glittering in the night, surrounded by thousands of LED “tulips” at Magic at the Mill. These are just glimmers of the holiday joys that brighten our historic town. After warming up by a crackling fireplace, wander the outdoor Kerstmarkt to browse hand-woven mittens, homemade wreaths, and blacksmith-forged ornaments. Step into Holidays at the Farm or witness a live nativity, then let the soaring music of the Holland Symphony carry you away beneath the stained glass of a Gothic rose window. Adding even more magic, Dutch Winterfest returns in early December, celebrating the Sinterklaas season with the Holiday Haus tour, majestic Delft Downtown ornaments, traditional Dutch tastings, and family-friendly fun inspired by old-world Dutch traditions. This year, make your holidays truly memorable. Glide beneath the winter sky at the new Holland Ice Park, shop downtown with a spiced drink in hand, and discover the warmth and wonder of the season.

Snowmelt
Since 1988, Holland has kept its downtown streets and sidewalks clear of snow and ice all year long – thanks to an innovative snowmelt system running beneath city surfaces. With more than eight miles of underground pipes using recycled energy, it’s the largest publicly owned snow-melt system in North America. That means no slipping or sliding when you’re out jogging, walking your dog, or exploring downtown in the winter months. It also makes a big difference for the fun events Holland hosts during the colder season. Whether you Shop 'Til You Drop during the holiday sales, hunt for clues in the Sinterklaas Shuffle, or run past ice sculptures in the Snowmelt 5K, the sidewalks stay safe and easy to navigate. Even the Parade of Lights and St. Patrick’s Day procession are guaranteed to roll right down warm, snow-free 8th Street without any icy troubles. So when you visit downtown Holland, park in a free spot and relax knowing your feet are on solid ground. Getting to your favorite clothing store, a wine tasting, or culinary destination will be a breeze — and if you want to take a winter stroll while savoring a hot drink, you won’t have to worry about icy patches slowing you down. It’s just one of the ways Holland makes winter welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.

Ice Park
For almost a century, the City of Holland dreamed of building a community ice park. Thanks to a beloved local teacher and modern engineering, that dream became a reality in 2025.
Frank Kraai, a retired Holland school teacher, was 86 when he discovered he was a millionaire. Inspired by a lifelong vision, he donated his life savings, $1.1 million, to help turn a long-held community dream into an $11 million, 14,000 square-foot ice park in the heart of downtown Holland. In the past, inconsistent ice conditions kept the idea on hold. Today, innovative engineering keeps the ice frozen from November to March when daily temperatures are below 50 degrees. One of the largest of its kind in North America, the Holland Ice Park welcomes skaters to a spacious central pond and ribbon looping around landscaped islands. Visitors can also enjoy a dedicated curling rink, skate rentals, and gathering areas warmed by Holland’s renowned snowmelt system. That same system connects the ice park to the surrounding downtown district, guiding guests along snow free sidewalks to nearby boutique shops, cozy cafes, and local breweries.
Courtesy of City of Holland
Located within Window on the Waterfront Park, the Holland Ice Park invites all to gather by its crackling fireplaces and experience a winter wonderland crafted by imagination and creative engineering. Whether you're gliding across the ice or watching the fun with a hot cocoa in hand, Holland Ice Park is where winter dreams come true.

Uniquely Holland
Big Red
Don’t miss Michigan’s most photographed lighthouse, Holland’s beloved “Big Red.” Since 1907, this iconic beacon has stood sentinel over the channel to Lake Michigan. For a breathtaking vista of the shoreline and its colorful guard, climb a dune staircase to the top of Mt. Pisgah – it’s definitely worth the 239 steps! For the closest public view, follow the scenic Black Lake Boardwalk to the north pier at Holland State Park – the best place to admire this lakeshore landmark. (You can also drive directly to Holland State Park and still enjoy a fantastic view). 2215 Ottawa Beach Rd, 49424 One of the last of its kind in America, the Holland Bowl Mill makes exquisitely crafted solid hardwood bowls the same way it was done over 150 years ago. It can take almost 100 years for a hardwood tree to develop the grains that make each bowl so beautiful, and the skilled artisans who handle the wood give it the reverence it deserves. For over a month, they lovingly hand carve, dry, sand, and oil each piece, touching each one more than 100 times in the process. This 5th generation family business is descended from wooden shoe carvers and remains a master of a vanishing art. Come visit their factory where antique machinery is buzzing, sawdust is flying, and the scent of Holland Bowl Mill

Public Art
With nearly 100 outdoor installations, Holland showcases art in unexpected places. Murals bring buildings to life - giant flowers bloom outside 205 Coffee Bar, a bicycle sprocket spins across the walls of Velo City Cycles, and a two-story tribute to the Latino community graces the façade of the Holland Armory. Sculptures turn the city into a scavenger hunt: find bronze musicians beneath a Norway maple, a dogsledder crafted from scrap metal, and the sandstone figure Zhdondige-kwe . More than half the artwork is within walking distance of downtown’s 8th Street, with more scattered throughout the community. THINGS TO DO
Shoulder Seasons
To experience Holland like a local, be our guest in moments between our busiest times.
Beyond the Weekend
Stay midweek and you’re sure to save on lodging and have more of Holland to yourself, even during our most popular times of year. So, arrive on a Tuesday or extend your stay through a Thursday night, and you’ll fit right in with the descendants of thrifty Dutchmen!
Spring
Nature is a finicky being, especially in springtime. This is why our parks department plants early, mid, and late blooming varieties of tulips in preparation for our annual Tulip Time festival. Many years, the end of April is filled with blooms, and in others, glorious color continues well beyond the celebrations. For a floral forecast, call the visitors bureau in early April or tune into the city’s Tulip Tracker for live coverage.
Autumn
With daily average highs of 75˚F, September melds the best of summer’s sweetness with the flair of fall. At this golden time of year, those in Holland slow down and savor the last of the sailboat races and Windmill Island’s glorious blossoms, then wander orchards to pick Honeycrisp apples. Fall colors peak in October, their beauty lasting into early November.
Winter
Lake effect snow and glittering ice crystals create inspiring outdoor adventures. Snowshoe through hemlocks, cross-country ski across dune tops, or stand-up paddleboard through craggily ice formations. When you’ve had your fill of breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and its frosted winter beaches, head downtown for a little curling at the new ice park, then wind along snow-free sidewalks to shops and eateries brimming with warm hospitality.

Olive Shores is a great spot to watch a spectacular West Michigan sunset. 8555 Olive Shore Ave, 49460
Tunnel Park Climb a dune staircase to panoramic views of Lake Michigan, or take a shortcut through the namesake tunnel to a rolling sandy beach. A great place for a picnic, Tunnel Park is the spot to unwind as the kids race up and tumble down a soaring sand dune.
