Adirondack Peeks Winter 2025

Ethan said, “Being able to fish early in the morning was my favorite part of being at camp. I appreciated the hospitality — all the counselors were nice and they signed my hat and boot. There were a lot of fun things to do, and I especially liked the overnight trip where we got to set up the tent and build a fire. Overall, being there was fun and I hope to go back to Pack Forest next summer! I’m still shell shocked that out of all the people you could have picked, that you picked me.” Sam said, “I had a really fun time at Camp Pack Forest. The camp helped me learn about nature and getting to know other people. I had a fun time and even made some new friends. I would really like to go again!” Mikayla said, “Dear 46er Club, Thank you for providing me with the outdoor experience at Camp Colby. I enjoyed it so much. I made so many new friends and did fun things. I went canoeing, hiking, camping overnight in a lean-to and went to Lake Placid for a day. I even saw a beaver dam, but

the best thing of all was being in the Adirondacks. I want to thank you again for paying for my experience. It was a week I will remember forever.” Katie said, “Dear 46ers, Thank you so much for giving me a scholarship to go to Camp Colby last summer. I was so excited to get to go to a new camp as I had gone to Camp Rushford before. I really liked meeting people from different parts of the state. My favorite parts were getting to know my cabin mates and all the fun activities that we did in the evenings. The counselors were all really nice too. Thank you again for sponsoring me. I have a lot of great memories from this summer.” Sean said, “My experience with the DEC was phenomenal, I got

to stay on an island for the first time and learn about our environment while learning new communication skills and meeting new people. I definitely recommend attending the camp!”

Mark Obbie #6513 has joined the PEEKS team as a copy editor. Obbie says he’s more than a little sheepish about having waited 16 years since completing the 46 to step up and help out. “But,” he said, “that’s less than half the time it took me to climb the 46 in the first place. I started in 1974, as a 15-year-old, when I did the Great Range with my scoutmaster. It took me until the late 1990s to pick the habit up again, after having lived and worked out of state for most of that time. I finished on Whiteface in 2009, at the age of 50. Now that I’m retired after a 45-year career as a reporter and editor, I figured it was high time I gave back to the organization by using my editing skills.” Although Obbie has revisited several High Peaks since 2009 — 10 of them winter climbs — he and his brother, Todd Obbie #5964W, and other hiking buddies have backpacked and paddled their way around many other wilderness areas inside the Blue IN THE PACK

Line as part of a half-century-old backwoods brotherhood he wrote about in Adirondack Life – https://www.adirondacklife. com/2021/11/30/backwoods-brotherhood/
