Adirondack Peeks Summer 2023

Winter 46er Dinner 2022–2023 Peggy MacKellar, 2857WV The annual Winter 46er Recognition Dinner was held at High Peaks Resort in Lake Placid on Saturday, April 1, 2023, from 5 to 9 p.m. The social hour was lively with sharing stories of peaks climbed, views enjoyed, hardships endured, and camaraderie of the trail. The buffet had a delicious selection of hot foods, salad, rolls, and pies. Seventy people registered with the Of fice of the Historian as winter finishers since the end of the 2022–2023 season. Twenty-three finishers were present. Many of the finishers reported common themes, such as “3-a.m. starts” and spouses, friends, and family members thinking they were “crazy.” A great time was had by all 92 hikers in attendance. The 2022 finishers in attendance were Johnny Wit ter and Joanne Conley. The 2023 finishers in atten dance included Heather Barkley, Nicholas Croteau,

Alison Defibaugh, Vikram Gokhale, Bruce Graham, Sara Gulbrandsen, Ralph Haddock, Alissa Harse, Jas preet Kaur, Chris Martin, Mary Ann McGough, Elizabeth Nunes, Alexis Richter, Sonja Rossi, Gregory Scharwath, William Scott, Brian Shultis, Erika Weinbacher, Praveen Krishnan, and Anthony Szmul. The 46er organization is very proud of them and the other winter finishers who could not attend. Peggy MacKellar used a new recipe, which cre ated even better “Death by Cotton” gingerbread men. Thanks also go to Terri Maximillian (Tmax) who brought her amazing vegan cupcakes. The slideshow kept us in the winter mood even though we were enjoying the comforts of being indoors. The inaugural meeting of the Adiron dack Forty-Sixers club was held May 30, 1948, at the Adirondack Loj. The 75th Anniversary logo, designed by Winn Rea #9903V, features the familiar club logo created by Ed Hudowalski in 1948, encircled by a brilliant blue ring with the club's dates, 1948–2023, and the words, Experience, Sustainability, Generosity, that capture the organization's attitudes and practices as a leader of Adirondack environmental stewardship and volunteer service in the twenty-first century.

A time-honored tradition of the 46ers has been our Correspondent Program. For many years Grace Hudowalski, the first woman to climb all 46 peaks and the first president of the organization wrote to aspir ing climbers. She shared her expertise and love of the mountains with new climbers and encouraged them in Become a Correspondent and Help Aspiring Climbers along Their Journey Kristen Peek, #12410

their journey. Armed with nothing more than a typewrit er and a love of the mountains, she wrote to each of those who were trying to climb all 46 peaks. The program has transformed to an online platform, in the spirit of today's electronic world. Since migrating to a web-based platform, Correspondents have men tored over 220 aspiring 46ers through their journey. Correspondents support climbers through inspring LNT, listening to their stories, and answering questions.
